Seattle Children’s Theater 2013-2014 Mainstage Season Schedule

April 6, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Seattle Children’s Theatre is thrilled to announce its 2013-2014 Mainstage Season. Including two world premieres, this 5-play line-up (with one special add on only available to subscribers) features a girl of indomitable strength and fierce independence to a boy who finds his courage on an incredible journey, and a classic tale about the importance of telling the truth. SCT invites its audiences to inspire possibility in children of all ages this season by experiencing the magic of professional live theatre.

“This season we are showcasing strong, resilient characters who find their own way of belonging,” says SCT Artistic Director Linda Hartzell. “We are presenting two world premieres as well as exciting adaptations of several beloved stories. These plays are designed for families and teachers who want to facilitate important discussions about values such as creativity, loyalty, honesty and courage.”

Following is the full schedule for SCT’s 2013-2014 season:

Pippi Longstocking: The Family Musical

Music and Lyrics by Sebastian

Adapted for the stage by Sebastian and Staffan Gotestam

Based on the novel by Astrid Lindgren

Pippi Longstocking: The Family Musical is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Charlotte Martin Theatre

September 26 – November 3, 2013

Recommended for Ages 5 and up

No school, no parents, no bedtime or rules. With her mom in the clouds and her dad at sea, Pippi’s on her own to live as she pleases.  A girl of indomitable strength and fierce independence, Pippi quickly befriends neighbor kids and delights in playing games that confound authorities. Anything can, and will, be put to rhythm and rhyme as she bucks the system and dances away any blues. She takes center stage in the circus, wrestles the strongman, outwits burglars and dodges the orphanage. While friends Tommy and Annika love Pippi and her outlandish existence, the local adults want her to conform to their rules.

Dot & Ziggy – Back by Popular Demand

Created by Linda Hartzell, Mark Perry and Seattle Children’s Theatre

Music by Chris Walker

Eve Alvord Theatre

October 3 – November 24, 2013

For Newborns through Age 4 – a perfect introduction to interactive theatre

Dot & Ziggy may be neighbors, but they aren’t yet friends. After all, what could a ladybug and a skunk possibly have in common? One likes up, one likes down. One flies, one runs. But neither of them knows how to share. With the help of a wise spider, and the encouragement of the audience, they just might find their way.

James and the Giant Peach

Words and Music by Justin Paul and Benj Pasek

Book by Timothy Allen McDonald

Based on the book by Roald Dahl

Charlotte Martin Theatre

November 21 – December 29, 2013

Recommended for Ages 5 and up

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion which results in a tremendous peach – and launches a journey of enormous proportions. Suddenly James finds himself in the center of a gigantic peach among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, but after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. Thanks to James’ quick wit and creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together as a family. The dangerous voyage is a success, but the adventure takes a whole new twist once they land on the Empire State Building.

Pinocchio

By Carlo Collodi

Adapted by Greg Banks

Produced and commissioned by Children’s Theatre Company, MN

Charlotte Martin Theatre

February 6 – March 9, 2014

Recommended for Ages 6 and up

Based on the classic Italian story, this novel production incorporates the audience’s imagination to reinforce the universal importance of telling the truth. Desperate for a son, lonely puppeteer Gepetto crafts a wooden boy. Pinocchio, however, is not content with his stilted life, so after making a promise to his father, he heads off to school, believing that’s the key to becoming a real boy. Along the way, Pinocchio is readily sidetracked by diversions that he hopes will result in more money, friends and fun. Though he gets tricked out of his only possessions, Pinocchio eventually overcomes his scheming foes with the help of a clever cricket and a helpful fairy.

The Boy at the Edge of Everything – World Premiere

By Finegan Kruckmeyer

A co-production by Trusty Sidekick Theatre Company and Seattle Children’s Theatre

Eve Alvord Theatre

March 6 – April 6, 2014

Recommended for Ages 8 and up

In the middle of his over-scheduled 12-year-old life, Simon Ives dreams of a place where he can just stop and think. Meanwhile, at the farthest point of the universe, The Boy at the Edge of Everything lives by himself, lonely and bored. When Simon is rocketed into space (through an unlikely series of events involving “lots and lots of fireworks”), their worlds collide and neither will ever be the same. Follow Simon on an epic adventure through space and time in this quirky and charming play.

Art Dog – World Premiere

Based upon the book by Thacher Hurd

Adapted by John Olive

Composed by Susan Ennis

Charlotte Martin Theatre

April 10 – May 18, 2014

Recommended for Ages 5 and up

By day, Arthur is a mild-mannered museum guard; by night, his alter ego, Art Dog, is a mysterious artist who makes the city his canvas. However, when Leonardo Dog Vinci’s “Mona Woofa” goes missing from the Dogopolis Museum of Art, Art Dog is a prime suspect. Not to be deterred, the canine superhero simply paints his way out of a jail and collars the thieves with his brush strokes. While the town applauds his heroism and celebrates his artistic brilliance, the only thing still at large is Art Dog’s true identity.
