Disclosure: I received a complementary ROMO in exchange for this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Living in the 21st century is pretty incredible. We have smartphones that can do almost anything from the palm of our hands – and now, we can even turn that phone into our own personal robot friend! Meet ROMO, the robot that you can operate via smartphone. Simply plug your phone into the ROMO base, and it will prompt you to download the free ROMO app.
I received ROMO for iPhone 4S, and once I unboxed it, I plugged it into my computer to charge. I wasn’t sure how long it needed to charge for, so I left it maybe 20-30 minutes, and it powered right up.
Once you plug in your phone and install the app, it shows a fun animation and brings up ROMO.
ROMO asks you questions to get to know you, and wants you to give him a name. I decided to call mine Rob since he’s a robot. So creative, I know! Rob then asked me to play some training games with him, so he could learn to drive. Here’s a video demonstrating:
In order to play these games, you will be given a series of options and must select only those that apply. For example, if your mission is to turn ROMO left, then you’ll see a screen with option for turning left, turning right, moving backwards, or commands to that effect. You must delete all the options save for those that relate to your mission. I’m actually stuck on one of the levels because it won’t let me delete the irrelevant options, for some strange reason.
Luckily, I can still do other things with ROMO – you can also install the ROMO Control app on another device and use it to to drive ROMO around the house, view a live stream from his camera, and snap photos. This is probably my favorite thing about ROMO, besides his adorable personality!
Here is ROMO sleeping under our Christmas tree. Wouldn’t that be cute to find on Christmas morning? Hint, hint! 😉
