What do you think about when you think about going to church? I think too many people get wrapped up into the denominations and forget about the main reason for church Jesus. This Easter, which is one of the two most church attended days so let’s rethink church. Let’s talk about some of the Easter Traditions and including Jesus. Easter isn’t really about finding eggs and chocolate bunnies and Captain Chocolate (something done at my own church)… it is about finding love, hope and joy by opening your heart, reaching out and helping others, and embracing God’s love. The Key Words, embracing God’s Love and The United Methodist Church is encouraging us to Rethink church! Rethink Jesus. Jesus is EASTER!
Most of us think about Easter as a time to have ham, look for Easter Eggs and go to church, or scratch the church off your list completely and just look for eggs and eat as a family. Today we’re going to to talk about desserts and how The United Methodists want you to rethink church, Easter Eggs and Desserts.
United Methodist Church is really about finding deeper meaning in the Easter holiday season. So often people get hung up in superficial aspects of holidays, but the true meaning of the Easter holiday is about celebrating friends, family and God.
Rethink Church = Open Hearts Open Minds and Open Doors
Our hearts are full of love for our local communities and our world. Our service reflects that love.
We all think in different ways. But when we work together to serve others we share a common goal. .
Our doors swing wide, not just to let others in but so that we can all get out to serve our community.
Because of my huge sweet tooth, I’m going to concentrate on the desserts. I love desserts and you can make a dessert a family ordeal, meaningful and include God. The UMC has provided us with quite a few different recipes and ideas for making Easter more than the commercial idea. Check out these recipes to create new Easter memories that are more than just Easter Eggs, they are about loving each other and not judging and just experiencing life with each other in a positive way

I grew up Catholic and spent some of my childhood in South America. We never painted eggs or got chocolate bunnies for Easter. I love doing those things with my children now. Easter didn’t feel that celebratory when I was a kid. We used to witness a very graphic re-creation of the crucifixion along the streets of our town in Colombia. I always felt very sad at Easter. I know Easter shouldn’t just be about the eggs and candy, but I love that my kids look forward to the holiday. Of course we talk about the real meaning of Easter as well.
I definitely feel that parents should focus on the real meaning of Easter as well. However, for the very young children, they don’t really understand, so I think they should just stick with egg hunts!
I love celebrating and rejoicing this time of year. We go to church every Sunday with the kids so it’s nice when we are able to celebrate and go to mass with family on Easter.
I was raised in the United Methodist Church but switched to the Lutheran church when my husband and I got married. I definitely agree that we need to look deeper to see the real meaning of all the religious holidays, but definitely plan on keeping desserts as an important Easter tradition…right after we get back from Easter service!
I love the approach to focus more on the real meaning of Easter. We love to have fun with the festivities; but we always take time to discuss why the Holidays are so important and what they truly mean. And we celebrate the real reason for Easter.
I go to a different church, but love any church that welcomes and encourages everyone to join in. I hope you all have a wonderful Easter. 🙂
When I was young we celebrated Easter with eggs and bunnies and such.. as I have gotten older it has becomemore of a religious holiday. My husband is Catholic and so for him t is the end of Lent.
I think many people who celebrate Easter tend to do it more secular.
I think everyone does it a little different. I think the hunts are fun and fine to do so long as the children know the real meaning regardless of faith. We discuss faith in various countries to my older children. It helps you appreciate your own faith if you can appreciate others.
I agree, it’s unfortunate how people center it around bunnies, eggs, etc. HE is the reason. He is the reason why our family celebrates Him and celebrates Him EVERYDAY. Have a Happy Resurrection Day!
We make a big emphasis on the meaning of Easter…but since we go to church every week, worshiping is not just a twice a year thing on the “big holidays.” (and just to clarify, I’m definitely not saying that’s what you do!) I think showing kids that it’s important to worship every day has a huge impact in making the holidays even more meaningful. 🙂
People can lose focus on the meaning of holidays when they get caught up in the festivities. You have some nice ideas on how to bring the family together on Easter.
Such a good reminder. The meaning behind holidays get lost in our busy lives and trying to do 100 things.
You hardly hear what the true meaning of Easter is about anymore. So glad my kids know it’s about what Jesus did for us and that He is the reason we celebrate at this time of year.
looks like a great time for everyone and some great snacks. i never got to do this as a kid but will try to take the kids there so they can enjoy it.
This is a great reminder to celebrate why we really celebrate Easter, then dig in and enjoy the egg hunts and candy 🙂
