Well, my husband says we should go purple because it is my daughter’s favorite color. So anyways, the posh word is going green. I’m not sure I’m so into going green, or at least not completely. I love the idea of having Eco friendly reusable bags. Especially the ones that my MOMS club like to use, they are cute and even have kid designs and they fold up so tiny. I also understand changing out your appliances for more efficient ones. You’ll save on Electricity, but what happens to the old one. So it gets donated, well then someone else isn’t being green. Am I missing something, it seems to me there would be more trash. I must not know enough about going green I guess. I recycle. I recycle everything I can. I grew up in a state where I learned about recycling in school. In Washington, we recycle like everything. We have curbside pick up for recycling. My step dad used to recycle for money. I think my family in Texas should start recycling. My dad said they get or are going to get curbside recycling soon, but I bet they don’t use it. I don’t want anyone to think I’m against going green. I’m not, I just think that this push is a push to put more money into the economy. Now is a good time to buy stuff because sales are so big. I know I’m a little on the cynical side. I just feel we should do everything we can within our budget and with what we have. Buy natural, recyclable products. Have a garden if you can, we don’t get enough sun. I think I’m rambling. Ugg. Well, if withing the rambling you can make sense out of it. I’m interested in what other people thing about “going green”

Our family is going Purple, not Green http://bit.ly/4CCafr
as a fellow washinitonian ‘greeney’ who learned about recycling in school just like you, it totally apalls me that some people just don’t! i never really thought that the whole ‘tree-hugger’ cliche about people in washington had much truth to it until you look elsewhere. good lord, why would you not?! seriously, that’s just a crime of untold proportions in my book… especially when it’s so easy! do people really have their heads buried that far in the sand? i guess so.
I definately agree with the appliance replacement. I mean if one breaks, definately be energy conscious when you replace it, but otherwize it seems a bit uneccessary. My biggest adaptation is trying to use reusabel containers rather than plastic bags and bottled water all the time. I figure it is a good start. ‘m good with going purple too though, it looks good on me. : )
We are just doing little things like using less paper products and that also saves us money.
Until my youngest daugheter was born – we were not green in ANY way. Now I work extra hard. The thing with replacing the appliances can be applied to other things as well. Wait until it hits the dirt, then replace it with a greener version- light bulbs, wait until your current ones burn out then replace with the energy ones, you spend a little more upfront but they last longer and help the earth. Same with batteries, when they die, replace them with rechargable ones. I have to admit – it is WORK being green and I am constandly pulling things out of the trash that my kids don’t consider recycable – but I also treat it as a game – how LITTLE trash do I put out for the garbage truck. If you don’t mind me linking, I have a whole list of things we do at my house http://www.thekendalcompanies.com/TheGREENWord.html
I’m with you on the “do what you can”, i mean we compost and use our curbside recycling religiously. Whenever i feel a little guilty that i haven’t started a garden yet or that i occasionally buy “convenience” packaging i try to remember my summer trip to Washington DC. The week we were visiting we couldn’t find recycle bins at any of the Smithsonian museums, the national monument, the capitol building etc. You cannot take any bottled water into these places and they simply have huge dumpster bins for ALL trash…water bottles and all. My stomach turned for atleast an hour or two when we realized how many millions of people come to these places every month. Ugh. So anyhow, we’re light years ahead here in the Northwest. Don’t be hard on yourself if your’re a little more purple than green. 🙂
