Luke 6: 27-31
“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them to to you.
In Luke 6, Luke is sharing many teachings from Jesus. He healed during the Sabbath, the taught others constantly and he was full of good advice and teachings. He was explaining how our actions would be rewarded in Heaven and what God expects of us to give and to share with others. Nothing we have is our own, everything was given to us by God and it’s our job to share with others. To teach them about God, and to see that they do not go hungry in spirit or in actual hunger. If we see our neighbor in need we should help them. And today I’m feeling as a mother called to how to love our enemies.
My children are often hurt by others and often mean to each other. I know they’re kids. I love them dearly and many times I try to show them how to treat others and how to be kind. Sometimes I feel like I spend the whole day giving out warnings and yelling and just wishing they would be nice to each other. Reminding my daughter to be nice after she was mistreated is often hard. There comes a time when you want to tell your children to stand up for themselves and not let someone else be mean to them. It’s hard to know when to share the advice of killing someone with kindness works much better than retaliating. In this passage of scripture I feel it’s a good reminder to me that I could read every day as a reminder on how I need to act and how I want my children to act. Go out and do nice things to others. Pray when your heart is broken, not just for your heart to heal but for the person that broke your heart. I’m good to give to those who I feel God wants me to give to but not to those that ask. I need to help others that actually ask for help and not begrudge them for asking. Big message to me today is to treat others with kindness and remember that I can use the bible to teach my children. I felt like all of Luke 6 was full of great ways and words to help me teach my children and my own attitude when I’m having one of those grumpy I hate people days.
Dear God help me to love people every day and not just when I feel like it.
