Mom’s Night Out Movie – An Interview with Sarah Drew (@MNOmovie)

When I was following along with Louise’s trip to visit the set of Grey’s Anatomy and seeing how relaxed everyone looked during the interviews with the cast. When I found out I was able to interview Sarah Drew (April Kepner on Grey’s) for her new role in Moms’ Night Out, I was pretty excited! If you haven’t heard, Moms’ Night Out is a movie set to hit theatres May 9, just in time for Mother’s Day weekend. From everything I can tell, it is a movie created to give us all a chance to see how hard this mommy gig is on the big screen… and laugh about it. Here’s my favorite trailer.

According to Sarah Drew, Moms’ Night Out is a reflection of motherhood and a reminder of the “sisterhood of it all.” She’s adamant that moms need to realize that they are enough even when they don’t feel like it. It was really inspiring to hear her talk about her own struggles as a mom and how closely related she is to her character, Alyson in the film. Maybe the most revealing moment was when Sarah referred to the “closet scene” in Moms’ Night Out. Did you know she actually had her own hide in the closet meltdown in real life? I don’t want to make assumptions, but I’m guessing a few of y’all have had something like that happen (I know and will freely admit that I have!). She had been shooting the movie for about a week and was really putting pressure on herself to perform. She had the mommy guilt set in about the long hours she had been working. (We ALL know about the mommy guilt…) Her son and nanny had been on set with her and when her husband came to join them all, she ended up in a closet. “I literally dissolved into a puddle of tears,” Sarah says. Her husband (who by the way sounds amazing), was there to help her pick up the pieces and remember that she was doing a great job and remind her of her “beautiful mess” motto. I absolutely love that Sarah refers to herself as a beautiful mess and just think it goes to show how much of a “normal mom” she really is.image8

I asked if she had any of her own Moms’ Night Out groups and she most definitely does. According to Sarah, being able to “let it all hang out with other women doing the same job,” is crucial. She actually gets together with her own group of moms every other week to “gab, vent, cry, and laugh hysterically” and claims that if she didn’t have this time she would probably go crazy. I know exactly how she feels. image15

So what is she Sarah Drew hoping everyone takes away from Moms’ Night Out? “Stay at home moms are the greatest unsung heroes of our culture today… (They should) walk out feeling like superheroes.” She went on to say that this is a movie people should feel hopeful after. Hopeful about their relationships with their partners and she hopes that movie goers can take a minute to rest and feel grateful. MNO_OfficialPoster_Low

I can relate to many things she had to say and I think as mothers, we all can. It is a tough job for sure. Sounds like she does have a good support team in her husband as well
