Merlin Season 1 Review and Giveaway

April 21, 2010 by Momstart 175 Comments

1000115191DVDLEF My husband and I spent the last week watching Season 1 of Merlin. I’m a big fan of the King Arthur legend and even though Merlin, staggers in left field of the legends it is still quite an entertaining series. Merlin finds his way to Camelot, where Uthor Pendgraon is the reigning king. He has outlawed all use of magic and that is quite a complication for Merlin, the warlock. He finds it hard to become Prince Arthor’s friend but over time and through all the trials they both become great friends. Neither one is willing to admit it though, because how can a Prince and his servant become friends. That’s right, Merlin becomes Arthur’s servant as a reward for saving the Prince’s life.

What a pair these two are, also along for the journey is the lovely Lady Morgana who I’m sure is going to become evil and her servant Guenivere. Nothing is as it should be in this version of Arthur and Camelot, but if you have a heart for magic and knights, then you’re sure to love Merlin.

Merlin: The Complete First Season

Synopsis:.

As what Smallville did for Superman, Merlin is a new drama series that updates the story of the infamous sorcerer of Arthurian legend for a new audience. In a time before history began, the mythical city of Camelot was a fantastical realm and a dangerous world in which magic has been banned by the ruthless tyrant Uther Pendragon. When Merlin, a young man gifted with extraordinary magical powers, arrives in the kingdom, he discovers his destiny and that of the kingdom’s young leader in waiting, Arthur, are inextricably linked.

King Arthur was the leader of Britain who defeated the Saxon and established an empire over Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Norway and Gaul. The legends surrounding him, Knights of the Round Table, Merlin, and the sword Excaliber were based in fact…however, I suspect much of it has been exaggerated or added to throughout time….no doubt he was a great leader.

    Thank you. 🙂

I know very little about King Arthur, so this would be a nice series to watch. I love BBC, and decided to enter this because I know their programming is worth watching.
I know his knights were of “the round table.” Seems like he had a sword “Excalibur.” I think it was stuck in a stone, and the person to get it out was proven worthy.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

King Arthur never really existed in real life. He was created from legend. And has become a wonderful unique body of European literature.

Arthur is the legendary King of the Britains. Interestingly, in the hundreds of years of recorded history, there has never been a king named Arthur. Henry VII named his eldest son Arthur, but he died. My favorite re-telling of the Arthur legend is the musical “Camelot.” Richard Harris was in a stage version that was videotaped and shown on HBO back in the ’80s and that’s when I fell in love with the show.

“Le Morte D’Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table” was written by Sir Thomas Malory and published in 1485

to this day it is wondered if the story was based on a Real King or Just mythical campfire stories!

I honestly don’t know all that much about King Arthur. I did watch Disney’s The Sword in the Stone when I was a kid, so I do remember about his sword Excalibur and Merlin though.

My brother-in-law loves the show Merlin, so I would really love to win it for him! 🙂
