A few years ago, we went through a very demoralizing experience where vandals smashed out our car window not once, but twice. It was a very helpless feeling to have our property destroyed because some person driving down the road thought it would be funny to cause random destruction. This was prior to our having a driveway – the house never had one originally, so we built one during our renovations – so our car was parked on the shoulder of the road and easy to reach. One of the things we did to try and prevent it from happening again was install a security camera, along with with a large sign right over the front door notifying anyone walking by that our home had a surveillance system. People definitely took notice of the addition to our home and we haven’t subsequently had any issues with vandals, so I definitely feel like it helped.
With that in mind, I’m always looking for ways to make our system as effective and efficient as possible. So I was intrigued to learn about the link-U Hybrid SmartCam by Link-Union, a new kind of monitoring camera that automatically uses your home network or 3G/4G connections to access your camera anytime without extensive setup. Installation is usually the biggest hurdle for putting in a security camera, so it’s no surprise that their Indiegogo preorder campaign is going strong!
link-U Hybrid SmartCam is like having a central home hub: As well as providing all the crucial aspects of a surveillance system, the link-U can also remotely lock your doors and garage, control light fixtures, control window alarms, fire detectors and carbon monoxide detectors – all from your smartphone. And since the system comes with an 8-hour battery backup, it will stay online during a power outage – which is super helpful here on the Oregon coast since we’re going into storm season! Do you have a video system in your home? What do you think of this concept?
