Kiwi Crate was built out of a passion for hands-on fun that encourages creativity and curiosity in children. As a mother of two, Founder & CEO Sandra Oh Lin had a deep appreciation for these projects, but often found that her greatest intentions fell short. It was tough to find the time to come up with engaging hands-on activities, let alone get the materials.
So, as she started to develop creative projects with her kids, she thought, “why not share them with friends, who are also busy?” At playdates, the kids had a bunch of fun, and the parents appreciated having all of the materials and inspiration for the projects provided. Several parents mentioned, "I wish I could do this at home with my kids!"
Kiwi Crate was created to fulfill that wish and to celebrate kids’ natural creativity and curiosity. They want to make it fun, easy, and delightful to spend time building, exploring and creating together.
About Kiwi Crate
The award-winning Kiwi Crate delivers monthly hands-on projects that are tested and proven to inspire curiosity and learning right to busy parents’ doors. Each crate includes materials and inspiration for 2-3 projects, and each project is designed by parents, reviewed by child development experts and tested by kids. There are also single crates, mini crates, travel crates and party favors available.
I was provided with a Kiwi Crate to test out with my two girls, ages 5 years & 22 months. The box arrived and sat for a few weeks due to the glorious summer weather we’ve had here. We live in a convergence zone north of Seattle and end up spending so much time inside due to weather limitations. So much so that I have developed a lot of self-induced guilt staying inside when the weather is fabulous. Although in retrospect we could have taken our Kiwi Crate outside to our neighborhood park or back patio table to create. I’ll remember that next time- open the box before you make assumptions on when/where you can work on a project.
We were graciously sent the Making Music (link: http://www.kiwicrate.com/single-crates/making-music.html) single crate which retails for $19.95. My kindergartener was excited about the idea of making her own xylophone, my toddler more about the rhythm bells. The manual for each project was easy to follow with clear written directions and basic but sweet illustrations. My older daughter enjoyed the photos at the end of each of each direction booklet, as they featured "real kids like me that made the project their own way!"
For our creative time we started with the rhythm bells and enjoyed coloring the wooden beads with the colored pencils provided along with a few more colors from our own collection. It was a challenge to keep the beads out of the mouth of my youngest, but we knew that going into it so we had a game plan to watch her with our "hawk eyes". She’s under the suggested age range for the project, but she desperately wants to do everything her big sister does so we invited her to join in.
One of the great things about Kiwi Crates is that you can pack everything up in the box (as we did for a lunch break) and then get it back out and keep creating. After lunch Avery and I moved onto the xylophone and Mallory decided to play her rhythm bells with daddy. The xylophone was a collaborative project and we were both happy with how fabulous and also functional it turned out.
After all our instruments were constructed it was time for a concert. I loved watching my girls play music and sing together with the instruments they helped create. Sorry for the blurry picture, they were too busy making music to hold still, this was the best picture I got. Ha!
I will definitely remember Kiwi Crates in the future when shopping for gifts for family school or friends. Or when one of my girl’s Papas ask for gift ideas for birthdays or Christmas. Actually- that’s a great idea!!
Kiwi Crates can be purchased on their website: www.kiwicrate.com and are available in many choices depending on price and if the gift giver (or parent) wants to start a subscription. Please check out their website for more details on ALL the crate options available. You absolutely won’t regret it. And your kids will appreciate the quality time spent with you creating memories.
