The Filip is a cool tech gadget, sold at AT&T in the at the AT&T Store, that’s been out for about six months. It was first introduced to me in November as an idea then in December I received one to review. I wasn’t completely sure in it because of how easy it is to take off but my kids were interested in it. I was just worried they might change their mind and take it off.
I think the funky design and bright green color that it is made it appealing that way. Plus it tells the time so it’s like a watch but to parents it’s a resource. To use it to it’s fullest capability you have to download the Filip app on a parent’s Android or iOS device. (from testing it doesn’t really work unless it’s a cell phone device). One of the best features is that you can set up a safe zone and you know when your child leaves. Now, for us testing this device is sort of a scary idea but we were presented with a “safe” zone to use it. We were at Disneyland and Disneyland closed a section of the park for just us. SO we could let the kids be kids and sort of wander off. Me I’m still over protective and didn’t let them out of my site but in the future I might use it as a fun Hide and Go seek device. Knowing that I can cheat and find them in a pinch.
The Filip’s watch face can be used to send a text message or you can place a call to the Filip, which has a speaker phone built in for all to hear. You can store five contact numbers in it and the red button is an emergency contact. If that person doesn’t answer then the filip automatically dials 911. No we didn’t test out that feature.
You and any of the five people you pre-authorized can call your child’s FiLIP directly. You can also see their precise location on a map. For parents with multiple children, you can simply create a profile for each child in the FiLIP app.
The Filip comes in other bright colors like blue red and yellow. I feel much more confident letting my kids play on the playground because I know that I can find them. It’s a security blanket for parents that would love to micorchip their children.
How to Use the Safe Zone:
A SafeZone is a virtual radius which you can set using the FiLIP app. SafeZones are a virtual radius around a location, such as home, school or a friend’s house. When a SafeZone is set, a push notification will be sent to the parent’s smartphone when FiLIP detects that the child has crossed into or out of the SafeZone*.
* Timing of notifications depends on user settings for location refresh.
