I have gotten a grand total of 3 hours of sleep in the last two days. And I have the FitBit stats to prove it! So this seems like a very relevant time for me to partner with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) to remind everyone that adults need at least seven hours of sleep or MORE every night. There is a disturbing culture of busyness where people brag about how little sleep they’re getting – “I can sleep when I’m dead”, etc. Well, due to issues which I am currently addressing with a doctor and general workaholism, I get less sleep than anyone, and I can tell you right now that not only is sleep deprivation not a cool thing to brag about, but it is down right detrimental to your health.
There are all kinds of negative effects that sleep deprivation has on a person; I know my brain does not function properly when I am sleep deprived. I was asked to share an anecdote about something silly I’d done when running on fumes, and I can tell you one from just this afternoon. I was in a supermarket picking something up for lunch, and I was suddenly overwhelmed by choice; nothing made sense, and I found myself staring at the potato chip aisle for an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out what on Earth to buy. I must have looked completely lost, because one of the employees stopped, pointed at his favorite bag of chips, and opened it right there to give me a sample and convince me. How tired am I if I can’t even buy potato chips on my own?!
To help you on the path to better sleep, the AASM has a few tips:
- Don’t stay up late working on the computer. (Guilty!! Guilty!! I am GUILTY!!!!)
- Do something relaxing, like read a book – my problem here is that I always pick something engrossing and stay up until 1 AM finishing it. My grandma says she solves this problem by reading boring books! Hahaha!
- Do try to keep a regular sleep schedule;
- And most importantly, DO see your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping!
