Disney provided hotel and transportation for us to attend the Incredibles 2 Animation Day. While we were at the Incredibles 2 Animation Day we had the opportunity to learn about how easy it is to create your own “Super”.
But first we had to learn a little about the different shapes that occur in art and what they mean. Take for example a very large boxy type character. This is the shape of Mr. Incredible, who is super strong right? That is a shape that we recognize, we see security people are usually that shape.
Then you can also think of long and slender boxes or long slender triangles show us speed and agility and are often feminine. Then you have the circle shape and it can represent unity or the circle of life. And then the combination just gives us a feeling, along with the colors you choose and how you put them together.
How To Create A Super
While we were at Pixar we were encouraged to do three different things.
One. We were encouraged to just cut out some basic shapes.
Two. We were encouraged to use two basic colors and could accent with a few more.
Three. We were encouraged to just take those scissors and just cut.
He encouraged us to just be free and go with the flow. He said there was something therapeutic about taking the scissors and cutting. Kind of like an animator with a pencil, just go for it.
I wasn’t very good at just free cutting, so I cut out some shapes in two different colors of blue and put them together. My figure, even though I didn’t mean for it to, ended up looking a lot like Frozone.
Here are a few of the characters that some of my blogging buddies came up with. What do you think? Could you put together a great Super with just a few basic shapes? This would be a fun project to do with your kids. Just get some construction paper or pattern paper. Just get some different kinds of paper. Get some scissors and some glue. Then put it all together and see what you can come up with.
