I’m still not as mindful of the environment as I want to be. We recycle as much as we can and I’m amazed when we go a week and have only one bag of trash. Being a blogger I get a lot of packages and a lot of things that aren’t recyclable but many of the packaging products are reusable, it’s just more trouble. Of course it’s worth the trouble to make a difference.
I’ve noticed that companies are trying to create less waste for consumer by reducing the package size of their products. Companies like Hormel are working very hard at it. In mid-May, Hormel Foods released their annual Corporate Responsibility Report where they describe the progress of their corporate responsibility initiatives.
A few of the 2011 initiatives that had great results included:
Reduced packaging by 4.2 million pounds
Hormel® Cure 81® retail hams, 14 percent reduction
Hormel® Compleats® microwave meals, 18 percent reduction
Hormel® chili, 16 percent reduction
Contributed more than $5.5 million to local communities and hunger initiatives, including donating to 16 hunger relief organizations in Hormel Foods plant communities.
