I know I’ve mentioned this a time or two but meeting Harrison Ford was something I’ve dreamed about literally. I’ve wanted to just sit down with him and find out what he’s like in person because as an actor he is a all things. He has played so many different characters over the years and so many people out there have grown to love him. He also takes time to rescue people with his flying skills. I’ve heard he LOVES flying and that if you interview him not to ask a question about flying because he can talk about it for hours. I’ve also heard many different things about his personality and I’m excited to share what I gathered from the interview with him last week.
What is Harrison Ford like? Harrison Ford has a bit of arrogance to him, not unexpected since he is who he is right? I mean he is Han Solo a cocky pilot smuggling cargo across the galaxy. But he was still very thoughtful of his audience and decided to sit with us longer than he was scheduled to so that everyone had a chance to ask a question if they wanted to. He displayed intelligence in his answers and a smidgen of charm. So overall he’s a good guy! He reminds me of my dad so much because his personality is so dry. He seems to keep his true emotions to himself not every giving us a very accurate account of what he feels about playing Han Solo again. When asked he said it was so easy to step back into the role. It was simple putting on the suit, and seeing that guy in the Chewbacca Suit again it just felt natural. “I was happy to be back”.
Harrison Ford said he came back to the role because the “script was very good”…”the director whose work I admired”…and “it was an all together attractive prospect”. He went on to say that it was really important that he didn’t have to die his hair and act like 30 years didn’t happen because he is older and that would have taken away from the film. The Force Awakens is going to tell us why he was away for 30 years. Harrison Ford also said he doesn’t have a “favorite moment” from Star Wars. But he did enjoy getting back together with Mark Hammil and Carrie Fisher and working in England.
You may have read this next response many times…Why did he take on the role of Han Solo in the first place?
I did recognize both the utility of my Character to the telling of the story and….there might be, you know, somewhere in this, there might be some really strong elements that people would relate to. What I recognized was that I didn’t know much about Science Fiction, I didn’t care much about Science Fiction at that time and probably still don’t although I find it often gives us the chance to explore places and things that we haven’t seen before and that’s cool. What I recognized was that there is a kind of Fairy Tale structure in the characters and in the story. And I’d seen Grimm Fairy Tales that have lasted for the last 400 years, so that was a strength that I recognized and you know, when you have a beautiful Princess and a callow Youth and a wise old Warrior and then me, it was easy to figure out my place in that structure.
Harrison Ford considers acting a public service job. What he does is for the fans. The toys are for the fans and he actually said, “So it’s not about me. I’m not the Customer exactly but I love working here.”
There was a lot of collaboration on this movie. From the very beginning when Star Wars was announced and J.J. Abrams was selected as the director we saw a photo of everyone collaborating. When Harrison Ford was asked about his part in the collaboration he said he has no ownership and he can’t remember what ideas were his. If it was a good idea and Abrams liked it they shot it and it’s in the movie. He said that this film was a “luxury” because everyone worked so well together. He said that’s not always the case.
I can’t express how amazing it was to have this opportunity, he’s Harrison Ford. He could have said no to our interview but he didn’t. I still find him amazing and can’t wait to see him as Han Solo again.
Star Wars officially opens on December 18th but many theaters are showing it starting on the 17th.
