I have so much to say to Fox and their PR firm for allowing me to host my own Goosebumps movie screening. We invited our friends and they invited their friends and we watched Goosebumps. I grew up reading R. L. Stine books and I loved them. They were the kind of books that you read and if you were reading at night you would be a little freaked out. One of the series of books that he created is the Goosebumps series and they made a movie based off of some of his book characters. It was really good, I found it funny and a little intense in some areas.
The movie came out on Friday and is already doing very well at the box office. Goosebumps stars the great comedian Jack Black who plays the mysterious R. L. Stine. He is hiding a secret with his daughter Hannah played by Odeya Rush. A new family Zack (Dylan Minnette ) and his mom move to Greendale, Maryland right next door to Mr. Stine. He meets Hannah and is warned to stay away, but she doesn’t listen to her father and well their secret is soon discovered. The books that were written by Mr. Stine are real monsters he created to scare the bullies in his life. So he had to lock them up. The teenagers of course unlock the danger and it’s an all night adventure to get the monsters under control.
I really enjoyed watching this movie in a theater full of tweens because they recognized the characters either from reading his books or from watching the Netflix series. The tweens would whisper I know who that’s going to be right before the character would come on and then they would clap. There was lots of excitement to see Slappy who is voiced by Jack Black. Slappy turns out to be the ring leader of monster mayhem that occurs in the movie. I interviewed my son right after the movie to get his opinion on it. Here is his video review of Goosebumps:
