Getting sick is never convenient – in fact, Murphy’s law seems to dictate that you won’t need to visit the doctor until Friday night, when everything is closed. But there’s no need to choose between toughing it out or paying for an expensive ER visit on a weekend, because there is a third and much more convenient option: Visiting a local urgent care center.
In addition to offering weekend and after-hours care, urgent care centers also accept walk-in appointments, which can be so much more convenient that having to draw up your schedule around your doctor’s availability, or wait for an opening when your physician is very booked. Personally, with as packed as my calendar is right now, I’m too overwhelmed to even think about adding one more appointment to my planner, and I know that all the busy parents out there feel the same with back-to-school almost here! Urgent care centers are a great place to quickly take care of children’s vaccinations and physicals so that all the paperwork is in order before school starts.
Speaking of the school year, urgent care centers are also a great resource for college students on a budget. When I was in my 20s, I relied on my local urgent care providers many times for care due to the affordability, since I did not have health insurance. Now that I’m in my 30s, I have great insurance, but my family still uses urgent care centers for various needs, such as weekend and holiday visits. (Ask me about the time I had to get blood drawn on Christmas Eve!) Many families also choose urgent care for lower co-pays than an ER visit. In fact, one of the best doctors I’ve ever been to was an urgent care provider, and I’m so glad that I was able to get excellent care when I most needed it.
