As part of a new blogger program, Borders gave me 100.00 to spend in their store. I was overwhelmed by the kindness the manager showed me. I showed up expecting them to already know I was coming and my lifeline known as my phone was accidentally left at home. So when I showed up and they looked at me like I was crazy, the manager let me use one of their computers to get on the internet. I was able to find the contact information of the PR rep that set everything up for me. We called her and everything was taken care of in seconds.
Huge thanks to the manager of the Redmond Borders; because if she had told me no, I would have either had to go all the way home or to the library to print off the information I needed. I didn’t tell my husband this story because he would have laughed at me for not taking all the information with me in a hard printed out copy.
You know, it’s hard enough to get out of the house with the kids, diapers, snacks, wallet, without forgetting my brain.
My husband’s gift was the easiest. I knew exactly what I wanted to get him and I”m not going to post it on the off chance that he takes a look at this post. He said he wants to be good since it’s his only present.
I spent the rest on the kids even though, I could have picked up a few things for other family members. I’m trying to go though my family members and make sure I have what each one needs.
Sister 2 Movie Theater Gift Card
Sister 3 Husband took care of it (she does read my blog so I can’t say)
Mom and Dad 1 – gave them a laptop (so they don’t get anything else, maybe a photo book)
Mom and Dad 2 – photo book,
The kids were hard because there was so much to choose from at Borders. The above photos are what you might expect before they added an entirely new toy department.
With about four aisles of toys to choose from Borders has become a toy boutique. The employees upstairs were not quite as helpful as the manager and the cashiers. I really could have used some help carrying my load downstairs to the only register. I feel like if I had been at a boutique that they would have carried all of my stuff to the register for me. It was hard to corral my kids, with my arms full, but other than that the experience was great. I mean the price difference makes carrying my own toys to the register worth the struggle.
In addition to so many name brand toys and books to choose from (all of them being learning and education aids for all ages) They have a table set up where kids can read and on the other side of the tower there was a play table for children. That is a lifeline to a mom that has to do her shopping with her children with her.
Many of the items I purchased were on sale. They had buy one get one half off of all Melissa and Doug items and their clearance was buy two get one free. So I was even more attracted to their clearance than all of the new toys they had. I came home with quite a hall of goodies. Knowing me, we’ll donate half of it. We’re going to have to empty out my closet before my surgery and figure out what is getting donated and what is going under the Christmas tree. Christmas might be upstairs in my bed this year. 😉
Borders was kind enough to not only pay for my shopping experience but they want to provide one for two of my readers.

My favorite toys as a child were my doll, my books, and later games like monopoly. All of these are just as good today…playing with dolls encourages roll playing, dramatic play, etc; books are important at every stage of life to expand knowledge, to learn to read well, and to just look to books for enjoyment and while we only had one choice of monopoly games there are now many varietions of the games. It has strategy planning, negotiating, money skills, following rules, being a good sport and other skills that help a child in life as well as providing a fun game platform.

The toys on the site are a bit past my own childhood, but the American Girl dolls come close. I remember gift dolls dressed in the traditional clothes of various nations, and it was natural then to want to find out more about the countries themselves and the way of life in each. We learned geography and sociology without knowing it, and now my granddaughter learns a lot of history through her American Girl dolls and books.

When I was a kid we had Lincoln Logs and Tinkertoys. Then my kids had Legos. Now my 3yo niece loves to come and play with those. It’s so great to see a child engaging their imagination…and not a battery in sight!
We used to play (and still do as a family sometimes) Phase 10 A LOT! What a fun game!
I used to play with Lincoln Logs.
My sister and I used to love building things.
I am not going to say exactly how old I am, but none of the things I saw on the site were available when I was a child! We played a lot of card games, such as Old Maid, and they are still good today, since aside from being fun, they encourage memory skills.
I loved playing with the crystal growing kits when I was a kid. I filled many fishbowls with colorful crystals. I see that Borders has the “Dora the Explorer: My First Crystal & Fizz Kit”. It looks like a cool updated version for kids.

I like Bingo games, and I have fond memeories of playing Bingo with my family! Lots of different versions are available for young children…very enjoyable for a group of relatives, even helping each other, with small prizes for everyone!!
i chose the pink diary w/ lock because since i was a kid and once i learned how to write, i started writing in diaries and have never stopped journaling! it’s good for working on writing skills and also just good for getting feelings out in a safe place.

The science teacher in me loves the “My First Geology Kit” and I totally had a Chemistry kit similar to the “My first Chemistry Kit” growing up!
Mr. Potato Head – Can you ever go wrong with him. he was one of my favorites, seeing where you could put random pieces.
My Cabbage Patch Kids were always a favorite when I was young.
Hey! Borders has a sock puppet kit! I loved doing these as a kid! Now would be a great activity to do with some of my child clients!
The American Girl Dolls! I loved those and the books as a little girl. They make imagination go crazy!

Gosh. I don’t remember playing with any of that when I was a kid. I would have loved the American Girl dolls, though!

I must be old, because none of those toys were around for me to play with when I was a kid, but I did have a Science kit that I loved, so I probably would have enjoyed the “My First Science Kit.” As a teacher, I know it’s important to get kids involved in science at an early age and this kit is a good intro.
I was definatly the tom boyy as a kid and played with legos I loved them and all the neighbor kids would get them all together and would make the coolest forts ever!!

Borders carries books that are bundled with craft supplies such as “Potholders and Other Loopy Projects” by Klutz. When I was a girl I had fun weaving potholders with vibrant cotton loops on a square metal frame, and giving them to my mom and grandmothers. Crafts allow kids to be creative and feel pride in accomplishment.

I always enjoyed the memory games, and I see that they have a variety of match-memory games. I think they’re still important sources of learning and entertainment to help develop cognitive skills.
Thanks for hosting this contest! I used to love Candyland…it’s great for color recognition and just fun to imagine a land with a peppermint forest and a gumdrop bridge!
My favorite are the matching games. Still a great skill-building gift. Thanks!
I think the Make Your Own Sock Puppet kit is one I can relate from when I was little. I used to sew and stick fabric and buttons onto old socks to make puppets. I think that type of play encourages creativity and imagination.
I love the sock puppets. Everyone loves a sock puppet and they never go out of style!
Gosh, there sure are a lot of new and different toys than when I was growing up! One toy that is similar is the Dinosaurs matching game. We used to play these types of games all the time as a kid and they are great for on the go. Also, great way to build some cognitive skills!

I love the science kits. I really got into kits like this when I was a kid and now as a middle school science teacher, I appreciate how things like these get kids into learning for the fun of it.

The plastic ice cream cones remind me of the fake food I “cooked up” in my play kitchen when I was little. Food toys are still great for kids today because they inspire kids to get involved in the kitchen and learn about nutrition.
My favorite toy was actually books! My Mother gave me a set of Nancy Drew books and I really enjoyed reading them. I’ve since given them to my own daughters who, also, enjoy them.
Thanks for a great givaway!

I remember Legos with great fondness! Not the ‘kits’ from today, but just the boxes of assorted blocks and things, where you actually had to use your imagination to create things! And, that is precisely why it would still be good today – let’s get our kids thinking and imagining and dreaming!
The My First Backyard Explorer Kit looks like a lot of fun. Thank You

I like “Good Time Crafts”, as our daughter likes to make things.
One of the few toys I clearly remember (excluding misc. Hot Wheels, Tonka Trucks, and the occasional Barbie Doll) was a kit which allowed you to turn your hand into a puppet. Eyes, wigs, headgear and paint to put lips onto your thumb and finger to allow your “hand puppet” to talk. Wildly silly, but 40 years later, I still remember it.
I thought the wooden blocks, Stack, Crash and Splash, from the Borders site, looked like something fun my granddaughter would enjoy.

While I loved a lot of those toys and board games, the one toy I like best that I saw offered there was the diary with a lock. First, being told that my thoughts were worth being written down and saved in a book was a wonderful self-esteem booster, and second having the lock made me feel like I had control over my thoughts and helped me begin to think about which thoughts were good for sharing with others and which ones would just remain in my diary. Too many kids today are used to the idea of publishing every thought they have to the entire world; having a private forum for them to just write and reflect privately is important.

I love their puzzles, they’re always a great, classic toy for kids.

I played a lot of memory. It helps to build the brain, so still a good one. Plus they can play it alone or with a friend.

Rush Hour was and still is a great game because it encourages problem solving skill development (which helps just about everything in the brain) and is so fun for kids!

I would have loved to play with the meteor rocket kit. Very cool.
I didn’t see this on Borders but I loved playing Simon–it was a memory type game. I wonder if it is still around?
Rush Hour! logical thinking and puzzle solving skills are always good to have.
I had the American Girl Dolls, several of them. I loved those dolls. I remember being in the third grade and putting my Molly doll in the handle bars of my bike and we went “riding”. They were the perfect gift…In fact I still have the dolls to this day. They are a great gift choice because they last…the dolls don’t fall apart. The hair gets a little raggedy but you can always brush it out and if you don’t want to, then they offer the option to have the head replaced.

I’ve spent hours at Borders over the past 3 weeks and I always end up in the board games section. It was my favorite past time as a child and now my own children love to play with my husband and I. Borders has become so good at offering the best board games today. My “go-to” game of my past is now the same today with my kids – “Yahtzee” and there is a new spin on it (as there always is) that has proven very fun called “Yahtzee Free for All,” which is the best spin yet. I also loved playing Win, Lose or Draw and Pictionary. Today there is one called “Luck of the Draw” that has quickly made it to our family’s favorite. There’s been no funner version of a drawing game in my 44 years of living.
Our family really enjoys fast paced, creative thinking games like Taboo (my fav) and Scattegories as well as card games. So I would immediately add to our collection the following board games we have been wanting: Pictureka; Quiddler; Beat the Parents; Catch Phrase; Buzz Words; Blokus and Flinch. I would also purchase the Lego Avent Calendar.

My favorite thing as a child was a chemistry set. I see that Borders has “My First Chemistry Set”. I need to buy this for my grandson!!
The American Girl mini dolls are similar to the dolls I collected when I was young.
Legos were the toys I loved as a child. We still enjoy them and my daughter loves the melissa and doug toys!

The best toys are the ones that inspire creativity, and few toys offer as much open-ended possibility as Lego building blocks. I spent countless hours as a child building vehicles, buildings and imaginary space craft out of Legos. I am happy to see Borders carries Lego sets. Thank you for the chance to win.

Every night my mom would read me the book :”I love you forever.” And everyday we would repeat the memorable phrase “I love you forever, I like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.” Such an important phrase for kids to hear and know, and a wonderful book to take into adulthood.
It’s more about the books for me! I loved all the classics as a kid. Charolette’s Web probably being #1. I have already passed this on to my two older kids and hope to find more books of mine to do the same with. Borders is always a great place to find all the classics!
I saw paper bag puppets on their site, and I think they would be good for today’s kids because they spark hands-on creativity. We had a blast with those when I was a kid.

I loved CANDYLAND! Especially this time of year. I didnt even know Borders had all that cool stuff for kids – I found a new place to christmas shop! Thanks, hope to hear from you soon! 🙂

I don’t see any toys that we played we as kids. As one of six, we had a huge game closet with lots of board games, such as Trouble, Sorry, Scrabble, Battleship and many more. It was a lot of family fun, taught to share and play together and how to win and lose.

I played with American Dolls when I was a child…when I grew out of the “playing with dolls” stage, I moved onto the books. I feel that American Doll dolls and books are still a great choice today because they represent diverse, intelligent, and independent girls. They also teach a great deal about history and different time periods. I always found them quite engaging.
I don’t see any I played with as a child on their site but they do have a wonderful selection of educational toys for all ages. I really love the science based games/kits for kids.
