I live in the beautiful, lush, (and rainy) city of Portland, Oregon. I take the train to and from work, and have a bit of a walk to get to my office once I’m off. It’s only about 6 or 7 blocks of walking, but that is certainly enough time to get drenched and/or windswept in the rainy months (which is generally about October through May…)
Coats are a big deal to me. I have quite a collection of them because it’s so hard to find ones that fit all my requirements. This one is waterproof, but has no hood. That one has a hood, but it’s wool, so not good for rain. This other one is great for camping, but doesn’t go with my work clothes. That other one is good for rain, but not if it’s below 50 degrees. You get the idea.
And while I will say that it has been anything but jacket weather here lately, my ongoing search for the perfect rain coats(s) is what made me jump at the chance to try some items from the Finside women’s outerwear line.
Originating in Berlin in 2003, Finside was first conceived as a children’s brand, Finkid, toting clean and simple designs with the utmost in durability and functionality. In 2013, Finkid decided to expand that philosophy of form, function, and utmost quality to a women’s line, Finside, which has just entered the U.S. market this year!
I received 3 Finside items; the KIELO and JANETTA jackets, and the IMPI sweater (which can be attached inside the KIELO for extra warmth, or worn alone), as well as 2 items from the Finkid line; the TUULIS jacket and the TONTTU fleece sweater.
I decided to dig right into the Women’s pieces, and aside from some initial trouble with getting each of the zippers started (which was totally resolved after a couple of tries- I chalk it up to a “new zipper” thing, and haven’t had any issues with them since) I found the fit and comfort of each of the jackets pretty much perfect.
I tend to like a little extra room in my coats in case I want to have thicker layers underneath, and the size 36 (US size 8) seems like it’ll be just right. The coats were all a little tight, given that I’m currently 6 months pregnant, but I could tell that the way they are cut, they will be perfect this Fall, just in time for me to really start wearing them. And actually, Finside makes a cool “belly panel”, called the KIRSTI, that can be added to the KIELO to make it maternity-friendly! I know that if I were going to be pregnant in the Fall/Winter, I would definitely want that addition.
The Finkid TONTTU sweater can be worn separately, or be attached inside the TUULIS jacket for extra warmth. This will be a fantastic and versatile addition to our daughter’s wardrobe, and the way it’s constructed, I know it will last her for years. I’m predicting she’ll get to pass it down to a lucky sibling or cousin when she outgrows it.
Overall, I was really impressed with the strict attention to the little details, the stitching, the tags, even in the children’s pieces. And you can’t beat waterproof/windproof and machine washable. I’ve been on the hunt for good-stylish-functional raincoats for sooo long, and now my search is over. Hooray!
With a company mission to create clothing that fosters our need to explore the environment and encourages a desire for adventure, while producing high-quality and fashionable pieces, how could I not fall in love with Finside clothing?
