Get a taste of Old World trading lines and travel with a camel caravan through the Sahara. You’ll learn how the sand changes color with the sun as well as how locals find their way around the mountains of sand. Be sure to camp out in the desert for a night to see both the sunset and sunrise.
Your journey into the Sahara can begin from several countries: If coming from the southern tip of the desert, you’ll find yourself enjoying the food and culture of Timbuktu, Mali. The town is home to the University of Sankore, a center of Islamic learning, and also has a bustling market along with beautiful architecture and mosques. A caravan can also begin and end in Morocco, a country known as a melting pot of different ethnicities and cultures. Relive scenes from Humphrey Bogart’s Casablanca, take a steam bath in a traditional hammam, or walk around the lovely and busy Corniche (an area filled with shops and restuarants).
Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia
It is hard to pinpoint the best adventure in Australia when the country is so large and offers so many varied landscapes and activities. However, the Great Barrier Reef still stands out as the most amazing marine adventure. It is impossible to explore the entire reef in one trip, but plenty of companies can show you where to find seahorses, sea turtles, or sharks. And if you want some time on land, explore the Daintree Rainforest with a native guide.

Located in the south of the state, Homer offers the best of the sea and the best of the mountains. National Geographic suggests introducing yourself to the landscape with a sea kayak—beautiful views of the mountains and town will give you a good idea of what the area is like. After that, take on a hike in the Kachemak Bay State Park. The hiking trails are on the edge of unexplored and untamed wilderness. Don’t be surprised to see puffins, otters, or porpoises in the bay or in the park!
Whether looking for a motorbike adventure or a day on the water, you can find an invigorating adventure in Vietnam. Watch for birds and other exotic wildlife in the Cat Tien National Park, a piece of jungle that is crawling with wildlife. One of the Vietnam hotels will include a night of bird watching and a morning hike. Cuc Phuong National Park has even more hiking trails in addition to a primate research center.
For a day by the sea, go sailing, swimming or fishing along the coast of the China Sea. Many resorts will offer relaxing rooms and luxurious pools and amenities. The central highlands are a great place for cycling, motorbiking, or hiking as well.
Whether looking for the vibrant ocean or the uniquely barren Sahara, these destinations will let you explore an entirely new world. What is the craziest vacation you’ve taken?
