This past week, I had the pleasure of traveling to Cody, Wyoming for the first time. Many new tourists may think that Cody is merely a passing sight on their way to the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park, but this town is an attraction all to itself, rich in history, attractions and dining. I spent three jam-packed days in Cody and feel like I just scratched the surface of what the area has to offer.

A highlight of the trip was the Buffalo Bill Center of The West, a large museum that includes everything from historical artifacts to western art and natural history. This Smithsonian Institution affiliate has an impressive 300,000 square feet packed full of historical treasures, fun activities and great learning opportunities.

One of the fantastic events put on by the Buffalo Bill Center of The West is their annual Plains Indian Museum Powwow . This two day event treats the audience to Powwow dancing, singing, and drums as well as a Learning Tipi where families can discover the vibrant history of Powwow traditions. There are also a wide selection of vendors on site offering jewelry, pottery, paintings, and food.
Another popular event is the Cody Nite Rodeo, which has been held every summer since 1919. If you enjoy bull riding, bucking broncos, or calf roping, this is the show for you.
Of course, no trip would be complete without a taste of local food and a cozy place to rest your head. There are a number of of historic local restaurants to check out in Cody where you can sample food like elk and buffalo burgers, not to mention Chuckwagon cooking! After dinner, kick back and relax at the Chamberlin Inn, which has the softest beds this side of the West.
This is just a small preview of what I experienced in Cody – I’ll be providing you with a detailed recap of all the fun this week, so stay tuned!
