A new printer had been on my shopping list for a while. Ours had been acting up, which is a real pain with as many documents as I’m always having to print for work. The Epson Expression Home XP-420 Small-in-One® All-in-One Printer caught my eye with an impressive array of features that sounded well above and beyond what I had been using previously, so when I was invited to a test out a unit for myself, I naturally agreed. I was curious to see if it could really be as simple and user-friendly as advertised.
It ended up exceeding all my expectations, ticking every possible box that I could have wanted:
- It’s wireless: That’s right, everything prints wirelessly so you don’t have to deal with those huge tangles of cords! This makes it effortless to print what I need from not only any computer system in the house, but anywhere period: With their cloud printing solutions, you can send a file to print at home even when you’re traveling. No joke, I have been on the phone to Jai while halfway across the world trying to give him instructions to print files for my accountant back home – this would have made that so much easier!
- It’s compact: They don’t call it the “Small-in-One” for nothing! It’s light and modest in size, so that you don’t have to take up any more of your precious desk space than necessary.
- Photo sharing, scanning & printing: This unit also doubles as a very nice scanner, which has been handy for scanning everything from contracts to my baby photos! If you’re dusting off those photo albums to share snaps with the family, then you will enjoy the fact that you can scan directly to Facebook if you so desire! It has a built-in memory card slot so that you may scan straight from your camera’s memory card. You can also edit photos directly on the built-in 2.5″ LCD screen on the printer.
I love how this unit works great for my professional needs, but also has enough ease and “Fun” features that it would suit my Grandma just as well as me. And even techies love it – here is what Jai had to say when I asked him to share his thoughts on the Epson XP-420:
The new Epson XP-420 ‘Small-in-one’ All-in-One printer definitely lives up to it’s moniker. When I first pulled it out of the box it I wondered if there had been some mix-up as I’m not used to seeing All-in-One printer/scanners combos to be this small. A quick flip of the top of the unit proved that there was indeed a flat-bed scanner there. When you first unbox it and install the ink cartridges, check thoroughly and remove all the packaging tape that holds the trays and moving parts securely. This is pretty standard procedure for a new printer but I did miss some protective film on the ink cartridges. After you remove the plastic that keeps the ink from leaking in shipping there’s still a second bit of film on the side that needs to be peeled off too. I like the fact that each primary color has its own ink cartridge. This way you can replace only the color that you need when it starts getting low.
After powering on, the menus are easy enough to navigate. There are some nice built-in features that you find there like printing graph paper, music paper, and lined writing paper. It even will print weekly and monthly calendars right from the menu!
I connected it to our WIFI with no problem at all. It found our network immediately, asked for the password, and that was it! This was the moment that I realized what an advantage it was having such a small all-in-one printer that was completely wireless. You can have it anywhere in the house. You don’t need to use space on/near your computer desk. I just put the XP-420 on a smaller desk upstairs as it seemed to have no problem with WIFI range anywhere in the house. All of our Apple IOS devices were able to recognize and print immediately without having to set anything up. I installed the software that came on the installation CD and our computer was able to wirelessly scan and print with no issue. For our android devices, the Epson XP-420 supports cloud printing, or you can install the Epson iPrint app from the Google Play Store. I set both up. I Cloud Printing is nice since you can print from anywhere that you have internet access. The iPrint app works fine for me here at home as it gives you a lot of fine control with your printing and scanning.
The images it prints are as clear and vibrant as anything I’ve seen in a home printer and, to my eyes, look every bit as good as a photo you could have developed and printed professionally. Large pictures take a couple minutes to finish but small photos aren’t too bad and text prints quite quickly. I’m quite happy with our new printer!” – Jai
