Since rescuing my first rabbit, my home has gradually transformed into a bunny playground. We adopted a bonded brother and sister pair, Kooper and Keeli, back in September and it’s been so much fun getting to know them. What I didn’t realize prior to becoming a rabbit owner is that they have as much personality and intelligence as a cat or dog, and each one has their own unique interests. Keeli loves to explore and gaze out the window at the big world outside, while Kooper enjoys a more laid-back lifestyle and will start thumping in disapproval when my husband and I discuss politics. Both rabbits enjoy listening to heavy metal, but hate Christmas music. Keeli will eat almost anything, while Kooper has a more refined palate. The list goes on and on!
I often wonder what misadventures they get up to when we’re not home. The last time we went out of town, the pair managed to break out of their bunny-proofed space and find their bag of food, which they knocked down onto the floor so that they could get into it. Our pet sitter found them both lounging on the floor, fat and happy next to the bag of spilled rabbit pellets which they had devoured. I assume this was done in retaliation for the diet we put them on when we adopted them – hey, guys, it was doctor’s orders! 😉
I’ll never know for sure what Keeli and Kooper get up to when no one is watching, but it’s fun to think about. When I watched the new The Secret Life of Pets 2 trailer this morning, Captain Snowball immediately reminded me of my adventurous Keeli! If I’ve had a rough day, I love to curl up with the bunnies on the couch and watch something cute and wholesome – gentle programming is a must around rabbits, lest you get a thump of disapproval – so this looks like a movie our whole household can enjoy, furry or otherwise!
April 11th is National Pet Day, so if you’ve got a furry friend, give them an extra cuddle today. You can even use this site to share your own pet’s secret life! And make sure to mark June 7th on your calendar now so that you can watch The Secret Life of Pets 2 when it hits theaters – who knows, maybe it will give you some insight into what your pets get up to when you’re not home! 😉
