Tips for Potty Training Boys

October 17, 2014 by Beeb Leave a Comment

Potty Wiz

Sample provided.

Tips for Potty Training Boys

By Kaylee Wickline, mom of two boys and founder of the Potty Wiz

1. Explain potty training just like you do anything else.

It’s important to remember that for the first two or so years of his life, peeing and pooping in a diaper was just the way the world worked. Now that you’re ready to potty train him, you can’t just expect him to understand why, all of a sudden, he has to pee in a weird bowl. It’s a good idea to start out by introducing him to his area a few weeks before the onset of potty training and explain what it is and what it’s used for. Do so in a fun way by making up a rhyme or telling him a story. There are also plenty of toilet training books available that are geared toward boys that you can start introducing him to prior to potty training.

2. Don’t push sitting or standing. Give them a choice.

Many experts will tell you to start the potty training process with boys sitting down. This is because it’s believed to eliminate the confusion associated with sitting and standing. However, this doesn’t apply to all boys, just like not all boys like peanut butter and jelly. It’s important to give your boy a choice between sitting and standing and find out what works best for him. Boys are designed to urinate standing, so it makes sense that not all boys want to sit down.Plus, they’ve most likely seen dad standing in the bathroom, so they might be more curious to do the deed just like him. Get a potty chair that makes sitting and standing simple, comfortable and fun, like the Potty Wiz.

3. Give him a role model right away.

You show your son how to eat, how to sleep, how to play – why wouldn’t you show them how to urinate both sitting and standing? At the onset of potty training, whether it’s mom or dad, show him how to do the process both ways. If dad isn’t around, take a water bottle and pretend you’re peeing standing up. Like anything else, he needs to be shown.

4. Be aware of genital injuries due to training on the adult toilet.

Believe it or not, the toilet your little boy is afraid of can actually pose a health risk. Genital injuries due to falling toilet seats are not uncommon, in fact, the risk seems to be increasing. Between 2002 and 2010, researchers found the number of emergency room visits for toilet-related injuries to the penis increased by about 100 visits each year.
To prevent this, use a small kid-size potty chair when training a child to stand and, if you do decide to use the toilet seat, ensure the child stands on a non-skid stool so his anatomy is out of the range of the falling toilet seat lid. You can also invest in a soft-close seat and lid.

5. Make it a game.
Boys love a good game more than anything, especially when it comes to potty training. If they find something boring or stressful, they’re going to give it up faster than last night’s cooked carrots. You need to ensure the process is fun and stress-free. You can use a cool potty training chart like ours, invest in a potty training board game, make up a potty song to sing while going,or toss cereal pieces in the pot as an aiming tool and offer rewards and incentives for hitting the mark. There are plenty of ways to make potty training fun for your boy.

6. Buy a potty training doll.
We’re talking about a boy doll or even a stuffed animal that accompanies your child to the potty every time he goes and makes him feel comforted. There are plenty on the market, but some favorites are the Potty Monkey and the Potty Scotty dolls. Having a potty companion that they help “teach” to go potty will make them feel more autonomous and encouraged.

7. Forget the underwear and the pants and pick up some carpet cleaner.
The best approach to potty training is investing a lot of carpet cleaner and skipping the pants and underwear when possible. This allows your boy to realize when he’s made an accident and see the result of it rather that it getting absorbed into clothing. Truthfully, this is probably going to take a few months of pants-free evenings and weekends, but your time will pay off in the end.

8. Do your product research.
This is one of the most important tips. Please be aware that not all products are made the same and a cool character design or color should not be mistaken for practicality. A good chair or other tool will probably cost you a little more initially, but save you a lot of stress, mess and money because you won’t need to buy follow up products. We highly recommend adding a travel potty to your shopping list.

9. Consider purchasing a multifunctional potty seat designed for boys.
The Potty Wiz, which can be pre-ordered now on Kickstarter, is a good option for a multifunctional seat because it’s a potty chair that accommodates a young boy in the sitting and standing position, rids training of stress and mess, and encourages autonomy in all stages of potty training. Not only does the Potty Wiz work when sitting or standing, it also allows a young child to urinate naturally standing, without the need to learn how to aim at such a young age. It also features a built-in target, so when the child is ready to aim, it makes the process a fun and rewarding game.

10. Don’t stress

Kids know when parents are stressed. And the worst time to be stressed is when potty training your boy. He will feel your stress, it will make him stressed and there’s a good chance it will make the process harder. Remember, it’s a process and an important life skill and he’ll master it eventually.

Make sure you check out the Potty Wiz Kickstarter campaign, which ends on Sunday, October 19th!

Animal Jam 3D Shape Spotting Activity & Craft

August 21, 2014 by Beeb 8 Comments

Animal Jam

This is a partnered post.

From the moment they were invented, children have loved video games. From the crude games of my childhood (“Pong”, anyone?) to today’s fully immersive online gaming experiences, video games have been a source of joy for children – and, at times, a source of concern for their parents. Adults wonder about the educational value (Or lack therof) that gaming offers, and in the case of multiplayer games, how safe they are. That’s why I was so intrigued to learn about Animal Jam, an online gaming experience created in partnership with National Geographic to be enriching, fun, and most of all, secure for its young players.

Brady's Lab

In the Animal Jam world, kids can create their own custom character, from bunnies to penguins to tigers. Once they’ve created their avatar, they can navigate the online world and complete adventure quests, adopting pets and creating dens along the way. During their missions, children will collect real-world facts in their “Journey Books” and have a chance to talk to real scientists through the game, such as marine biologist Tierney Thys and herpetologist Dr. Brady Barr. What a perfect way to capitalize on a child’s love of animals and gaming as a learning experience!

Journey Book

Of course, there is a social element to Animal Jam as well; children can talk to their friends via the game, with parental controls on all chat settings and full transparency for adults to monitor their child’s activity in the game. Animal Jam also regularly produces content regarding online safety and appropriate conduct, which is another helpful learning experience for its players. The game is totally free to play; and if you want to give your gamer more options, there are memberships available which unlock more characters and options; a portion of every membership fee goes to National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative.

And when you’re ready to log off, you can take the fun offline by checking out the free, fun activity sheets available on the Animal Jam Academy page. After seeing all the clever fun at the Academy, I felt inspired to create my own Animal Jam themed craft activity!

Animal Jam 3D Shape Spotting Activity & Craft

This is a simple, fun 3D exploration for children that will get them seeking out shapes around the house in order to create a sticker of their favorite Animal Jam character. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Foamies Multicolor Sticky Back Foam Sheets
  • Scissors
  • Felt tip pen
  • Household items for tracing shapes: Spoons, glasses, wrenches, etc.

Tracing supplies

The idea here is that you’ll encourage your child to pick an animal to create, then look around your house for objects which they can trace onto foam to replicate their shape. We chose a tiger and used a large spoon, wrench, and pliers as our guides:

Tracing the spoon

This will get your child thinking about shapes and how they relate all around us, making this a fun little scavenger hunt as well as a craft! We used this large spoon to trace an oval shape similar to the face of the adorable tiger from Animal Jam.

Tracing wrench

The shape of the crescent wrench worked great for the ears!

Tracing pliers

The space in the pliers made a great nose.

Tracing scissors

Using the outline of the scissor handle, we created a pair of eyes.

Tracing shapes

Each of these foam sheets has a sticker backing, so you can layer multiple colors on top of each other without having to use glue.

Cutting out your sticker

Use a felt tip pen to add any finishing touches, such as a smile – which you can also trace using your spoon! – then cut out the shape from the sheet.

Foam sticker

And hey presto! Your sticker is ready. Simply peel off the backing and place on any surface that could use decorating!

Bird Seed Craft Tutorial Inspired by "The Pigeon Needs a Bath"

April 12, 2014 by Beeb 26 Comments

Bird Seed Craft

MomStart is working with "The Pigeon" book series to bring you these fun ideas! Compensation and samples provided.

image

The Pigeon really needs a bath! Except, the Pigeon’s not so sure about that. Besides, he took a bath last month! Maybe. It’s going to take some serious convincing to try and get the Pigeon to take the plunge. First in the series, Don’t Let Pigeon Drive the Bus recently celebrated it’s 10th birthday!

image

Over the last decade, The Pigeon books have sold millions of copies and enchanted young readers. The books have received numerous starred reviews, have appeared on many "best of" lists, and have even been inducted into the Indies Choice Picture Book Hall of Fame.

As you saw earlier this week, MomStart hosted a super fun "Pigeon Party" in honor of The Pigeon Needs a Bath by Mo Willems.

To help inspire your own Pigeon Party, we wanted to share this fun and easy party favor craft that the whole family can make together.

Pigeon eggs!

These "Pigeon Eggs" hold a bird seed surprise inside, so that the recipient of the party favor can enjoy getting outside and feeding some real, live pigeons after chuckling over that hilarious pigeon scarfing down a hot dog! My parents always had several bird feeders outside our home when I was a child, so I grew up with a love of feeding the birds. I thought this craft would be a fun way to continue that tradition!

What You’ll Need to Get Started:

Bird seed favor supplies

Supplies:

  • Small bag of bird food – 1lb or less
  • Post-It Label Pads in blue & yellow
  • Sandwich bags
  • Bag of 12 plastic Easter eggs
  • Scissors
  • Black felt-tip pen

IMPORTANT NOTE: As always, if you are doing this craft or bird feeding activity with children, parental supervision is required.

Step 1: Fill The Sandwich Bags With Bird Seed

To get started, pay a visit to your local pet shop and pick up some bird seed for your little pigeon friends; ours has a "Dove Mix" that you can pick up for $1.79 per pound.

"Dove Mix"

You’re going to measure this out in 1 tablespoon increments into 12 sandwich baggies.

Bird seed bags

Tuck the bag shut, and fold it in half so that it fits into the plastic egg shell.

Egg filled with bird seed

Step 2: Create Your Pigeon

Now comes the fun part where you can let your inner Picasso Pigeon free! Take your yellow Post-It Label Pad and pull off one sheet. Cut off a small portion of the corner to form a crude triangle.

Cutting the Post-It Label

Creating a beak

Unlike regular Post-It Notes, Post-It Labels have an entirely sticky back, so this will stick easily to the egg to form your pigeon’s beak.

Creating the Pigeon Egg

Next, take your blue Post-It Label and draw your pigeon head. This is essentially 3 circles: One large circle for the head, one medium circle in the center to form the white of the eye, and one small black circle to create the pupil. This is so easy to draw that even my un-crafty bird brain could do it! 😀

Drawing the pigeon

Using the outer line as your guide, cut out the head.

Cutting out the pigeon head

Line up the head over the beak and affix it to the egg.

Affixing the pigeon head

Finished egg

Voilà!

Bird Seed Party Favors Inspired by "The Pigeon Needs a Bath"

These favors are perfect for a Pigeon-inspired party – hand them out to your guests, then go outside and take turns feeding the birdies!

Finished party favors

You might say…this is one party favor that’s for the birds!

Now tell me: What party supplies would YOU create for a Pigeon Party?

Sneaking in Veggies With Sneakz Organic

January 31, 2014 by Beeb 5 Comments

Sneakz Organic

Samples were provided for taste-testing!

Lately, I’ve been trying to brainstorm non-perishable things I can put in a sack lunch. The area I’ve been feeling the least inspired with is protein-packed snacks for mid-morning and lunchtime. So when I heard of Sneakz Organic, I thought this would fit the bill in many ways, because it’s a shelf-stable chocolate milkshake with a healthy secret: It’s actually packed with veggies! Each serving contains blended sweet potatoes, carrots, and broccoli. I thought this could really kill two birds with one stone, since it would up my vegetable intake as well as providing a morning protein boost that I wouldn’t have to worry about keeping refrigerated on the go. It’s supposed to taste its best when chilled, but the shelf safe package means you can drink it either way!

So, what exactly does a vegetable milkshake taste like? It has a bit of a health food “Green” shake taste at first, but you acclimate to that after a few sips. I tried this when I was having a chocolate craving and I thought it was pretty good! I also gave one to Jai to have with his lunch, and he noted that he enjoyed it too. This is such a convenient way to combine milk and veggies for an easy snack – we’d definitely drink Sneakz Organic again!

ROMO The Robot: Turn Your Smartphone Into a Friend!

December 16, 2013 by Beeb Leave a Comment

ROMO

Disclosure: I received a complementary ROMO in exchange for this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Living in the 21st century is pretty incredible. We have smartphones that can do almost anything from the palm of our hands – and now, we can even turn that phone into our own personal robot friend! Meet ROMO, the robot that you can operate via smartphone. Simply plug your phone into the ROMO base, and it will prompt you to download the free ROMO app.

ROMO Base

I received ROMO for iPhone 4S, and once I unboxed it, I plugged it into my computer to charge. I wasn’t sure how long it needed to charge for, so I left it maybe 20-30 minutes, and it powered right up.

ROMO For iPhone

Once you plug in your phone and install the app, it shows a fun animation and brings up ROMO.

Rob The ROMO

ROMO asks you questions to get to know you, and wants you to give him a name. I decided to call mine Rob since he’s a robot. So creative, I know! Rob then asked me to play some training games with him, so he could learn to drive. Here’s a video demonstrating:

In order to play these games, you will be given a series of options and must select only those that apply. For example, if your mission is to turn ROMO left, then you’ll see a screen with option for turning left, turning right, moving backwards, or commands to that effect. You must delete all the options save for those that relate to your mission. I’m actually stuck on one of the levels because it won’t let me delete the irrelevant options, for some strange reason.

Luckily, I can still do other things with ROMO – you can also install the ROMO Control app on another device and use it to to drive ROMO around the house, view a live stream from his camera, and snap photos. This is probably my favorite thing about ROMO, besides his adorable personality!

ROMO Under The Tree

Here is ROMO sleeping under our Christmas tree. Wouldn’t that be cute to find on Christmas morning? Hint, hint! 😉

ROMO retails for $149 – learn more at Romotive.com and view more videos on YouTube and Vimeo.

Tiny Love Take-Along Bouncer Giveaway

November 22, 2013 by Beeb 35 Comments

Tiny Love Giveaway!

Sample provided for review.

A member of our family adopted a newborn this summer, so it’s an exciting time as we think about a baby shower and what items would make the best gifts for the new bundle of joy! One of the classic items you think of new parents picking up is a baby bouncer. I’m pretty sure most of us sat in a bouncer of some kind as a child! The only downside to bouncers is that, like many baby items, they can be bulky, require quite a bit of assembly, and might not be that practical for packing up and taking on the road. Enter Tiny Love’s new product: The Take-Along Bouncer!

This is a brand new product that just debuted this month, and is a great solution for families on the go. Unlike the big, bulky bouncers my parents had in the ’80s, this bouncer folds up flat and can be easily moved wherever you want to go, or put away for easy storage. I received a Take-Along Bouncer to review, and I unpacked it to do some investigating before I pass it on to the new parents!

Take-Along Bouncer Box

Take-Along Bouncer - Folded

When you unbox the Take-Along Bouncer, you will find one flat, folder bouncer, instructions, and a carrying bag. The bag is for storage and to help keep the bouncer clean as you tote it around to various locations. Smart! And when they say “No Assembly Required”, they really mean it. All you do is unfold the bouncer, and it’s ready to use immediately. Doesn’t get much easier than that!

Tiny Love Take-Along Bouncer

This lightweight, travel-friendly bouncer would be great to take almost anywhere. It has a safety belt on the front so you can snap baby in, so I think it would be great for keeping baby snug no matter where you go. Think: Family outings, gatherings at the homes of extended family or friends, or even just sitting in the front yard on a nice day! I like that it’s light and foldable, since parents have enough bulky stuff to lug around everywhere as it is!

Stuffed Toy in The Bouncer!

Since I didn’t have a baby handy to sit in the bouncer, I sat a stuffed toy in the Take-Along instead to demonstrate it for you. Mr. Stuffed Elephant looks pretty cozy. 😉

The trickiest part of this bouncer for me was folding it up. This video shows how it is done:

Twisting the dial while pushing the button was a little less graceful for me than in the video, and I got confused at first as to where the top part was supposed to fold and had a hard time getting it back into the box. Once I realized that the top is supposed to fold down, I got it back in the box with no issues. You’ll also want to watch that you don’t pinch your fingers when folding this. However, I’m sure that after you’ve done it a few times it becomes much smoother!

As someone who has never set up a baby bouncer before, I think if this product is this straightforward and easy for me to understand, then it should be a piece of cake for moms and dads. I think this is going to make a fab baby shower gift for sure!

Tiny Love’s new Take-Along Bouncer is available on TinyLove.com for $44.99.

16 STORIES FOR AMANDA ~ A Benefit to Fight Against Bullying

October 16, 2013 by Alyson 1 Comment

Having just watched Amanda’s video she made and listened to her parents speak after her death, I am heartbroken.  Has our World really gotten that backwards that a child who was trying to move past a couple of mistakes made at a young age would be abused, stalked and emotionally tortured for years?  And was this an isolated case? No it was not.  My 10 and 12 year old daughters both suffered some bullying separately at school just this past week for no reason other than someone else thought they could.

I am honored to be a part of working towards a positive change.  These authors have taken a horrible event and created something that can bring good.  The 16 stories they have written are enjoyable and educational.  Please read about these Stories for Amanda.

~ Alyson

About Stories for Amanda:

Amanda Todd was a young girl who dealt with bullying for three years.  Lured into a bad decision by a cyber-stalker when she was only 12 years old, she was mercilessly targeted online and in real life over and over again, until it became more than she could deal with.

She wanted to help other kids by sharing her story and letting them know they should never be punished for who they are or for making a mistake.  AmandaToddLegacy.org is an organization that reaches out to kids in need, educates about the harmful effects of bullying and provides resources that can make a real difference.

If you don’t know Amanda’s story, you can search her on YouTube and see a video she made 3 weeks prior to taking her own life (she tells her story) because of 3 years of vicious bullying.

The authors are humbled and proud to offer our support to this very worthy cause.

A MESSAGE FROM KAHLEN AYMES:

I was approached by Flirty Dirty Book Blog after the RT Convention last May about this cause so I researched Amanda’s story and like so many others, was moved to tears. I have a daughter that is just a year or two younger than Amanda was when she ended her life. I asked Denise Tung… “What if we put together a book where 100% of the proceeds went to help fund the anti-bullying effort?” She was thrilled with the idea and then I reached out to some of my author- friends. The response was overwhelming and the rest, as they say, is history.

Now it is 16 stories (some missing scenes from a popular series) and some brand new short stories, from 16 authors that reach across the Young Adult, New Adult and Romance genres. It is our hope that our readers will come together to support this very worthy cause and that we can help, in some small way, to keep even one more child from suffering from this horrific epidemic…

These are very generous women and I feel honored to share pages with them.

National Childhood Injury Prevention Week: Energizer Battery Challenge & Giveaway

September 6, 2013 by Beeb 30 Comments

Energizer Giveaway

Product samples & gift card were received for review.

September 1st through the 7th is National Childhood Injury Prevention Week. Parents have a huge job looking after their little ones and keeping them safe – there are so many things to think about and child-proof, many of which wouldn’t be obvious immediately. For example, I just learned that if a child swallows a coin lithium battery, it can cause chemical burns. Did you know that? I didn’t, and according to a recent survey by Energizer, neither did 62% of the parents they talked to.

Coin Lithium Batteries

That’s why Energizer has developed special packaging for their coin lithium batteries, following the Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines for child-resistant packaging. They challenged us to compare Energizer Coin Lithium Battery packaging to the competition in order to see which one would be more difficult for a child to get into.

Opening The Batteries: Competitor Package

I enlisted Jai’s help for this project, and gave him the first package of batteries to try. These batteries are from a competing brand, and have standard packaging. He was able to tear the package open with his fingers and get to the battery pretty easily.

Opening The Energizer Batteries

Next, I gave him a package of Energizer Coin Lithium Batteries. He tried to tear this one open with his hands, and exerted a fair bit of force, but all it did was bend the package.

Energizer Coin Lithium Battery Packaging

To open them, he needed a pair of scissors to cut the back of the packaging and pop the battery out – I can see that it would make it that much more difficult for kids to rip open the packet. You’ll also notice that there is a sticker on the battery itself, warning parents of the danger these batteries would pose if swallowed.

Safety Items

I was also provided with a gift card to use for picking up safety items. With fall & winter right around the corner, these are my picks for some practical items to check and/or replace:

  • Smoke Detector: Now is a good time to check your smoke detectors and make sure they are in working order and have working batteries.
  • Battery Charger: When winter storms hit, we use a lot of rechargeable batteries to power flashlights, lanterns, and radios.
  • Flashlights: And speaking of flashlights, how many do you have in your house?

Energizer Weatheready 2-in-1 LED Light

Seaside is notorious for its power outages, and no matter how many flashlights we buy, we never seem to have enough. I like to keep them dotted all through the house, so that it’s easier to find our way when the power goes out. I’m loving this Energizer Weatheready 2-in-1 LED Light that I got, because it doubles as a lantern with one click – it puts out a decent amount of light, which will be helpful when I’m fumbling my way through the next power outage this winter. 😉

Sleeping Beauty

Speaking of fumbling through the dark, I’ve been thinking recently that it would be good to put out a nightlight so that it will be easier for my guests (And me!) to find their way if they have to get up during the night to use the restroom. I picked this Sleeping Beauty nightlight because it matches my Cinderella alarm clock! 😉

Thanks to my package from Energizer, I’m feeling prepared for autumn weather with a new safety toolkit before summer is even over – yeah! As you get ready to load those holiday gadgets with batteries, just remember the “4 S’s”: Store coin lithium batteries & devices away from the reach of children, Secure the battery compartment, Select battery packaging that is child-resistant, and Share this info with other parents. For more on coin lithium batteries and safety tips, visit TheBatteryControlled.com

Enter to Win!

One MomStart reader will win the following products:

  • 2 packages of Energizer Coin Lithium batteries
  • 1 Energizer Weatheready 2-in-1 LED Light
  • 1 Energizer LED Nightlight – your choice of Cars or Sleeping Beauty
  • To Enter:

Fill in the Rafflecopter form below – giveaway ends on September 7th at 11:00 PM PST, and is open to residents of the continental United States, 18+ – sorry, P.O. boxes and APO/FPO addresses are not eligible. Please see our giveaway rules for full terms & conditions.

Kidz SuperFood: Eat Your Veggies in a New Way!

August 5, 2013 by Beeb 12 Comments

Kidz SuperFood

Samples of Kidz SuperFood provided for review.

Eat your veggies!! I’m sure every child has heard this uttered at least once. Indeed, even parents who actually want to eat their veggies may find it hard to get the full 8-a-day servings in. That’s why Amazing Grass introduced Kidz SuperFood, a blend of drinkable greens aimed at children’s tastebuds. According to the company, each serving of Kidz SuperFood equals three servings of fruit and vegetables. They blend everything from zucchini to plums in these mixes, available in Chocolate and Wild Berry flavors.

The packets recommend adding the powder to things like milk, applesauce, and yogurt, which sounded good to me since I usually prefer to add this type of “Green” drink to a smoothie with other ingredients. I tried both the Chocolate and Wild Berry added to some sweetened honey yogurt – the Chocolate was my favorite! As long as you add enough yogurt, this has a good, subtle chocolate taste. If you add a lot of powder to a small amount of yogurt, you can detect the distinct greens taste, so I personally would advise experimenting with the proportions and taste-testing it yourself before giving it to your kids so that they don’t turn their noses up. I’m willing to bet that you could sprinkle some of the chocolate powder in brownie batter or otherwise “Sneak” it into other foods as long as you’re not heavy-handed about it!

Green SuperFood Energy Bar

I also received a Green SuperFood Energy Bar in Chocolate to try out. The bar is made for adults and has a lot of attributes that I like – it is USDA Organic certified, and the wrapper also says “Fair Trade” although there is no Fair Trade certification on it. I believe what they are referring to is their chlorella and spirulina, which according to this page is fair trade certified. The bar is also gluten free and vegan.

The outside of this looks like a heavy chocolate bar, while the inside reveals a dark green center from the vegetables. This just wasn’t for me because of the taste of “Greens”. Jai tried it and said it tasted better than he expected, and although it wasn’t his favorite thing, it’s something he would eat when hungry.

Click here to find an Amazing Grass retailer in your area, or visit AmazingGrass.com to place an online order!

How do you make sure that your kids eat their veggies?
