Six Halloween Costume Ideas for the Comic Lover

October 13, 2014 by Momstart 1 Comment

Halloween is fast approaching, which means it’s time to get thinking about your costume. From a cool Spider-Man to a classic Wonder Woman, comic lovers are spoiled for choice when it comes to picking a Halloween outfit. We reveal six of the hottest comic book stars who are perfect for dressing up as this Hallows’ Eve.

Wonder Woman

If you want to look cute and have an awesome costume that will be the envy of others then why not go as DC Comics amazing Wonder Woman? Not only is she one of the most famous female superheroes of all time, but she is also an Amazonian Princess and a poster woman for feminism.

When dressing up as Wonder Woman, you really have to go all out. Invest in a high quality Wonder Woman Halloween outfit and you will be rewarded with compliments all night long. Check out this infographic by Mr. Costumes for some Wonder Woman inspiration.

Bride of Frankenstein

One popular option is to dress up as a freaky bride of Frankenstein. This outfit has plenty of scope for customization so you can truly make it your own. You will need a white bride’s dress, which you may be able to find at your local thrift store, or you can order from a costume store online.

It’s the accessories that help to complete this outfit and make it spooky. Wear a black wig that has been backcombed, make yourself pale with some white face and body paints, and cover yourself in fake blood for a look that is sure to scream Halloween!

Spider-Man/Spider-Girl

This option is perfect for your little ones as they will love dressing up as one of the most famous comic characters of all time: Spider-Man. It’s easy to find ready-made Spider-Man (and Spider-Girl) outfits that have been made for children, so you won’t have to spend time painstakingly making the outfit at home.

Iron Man

If you really want to cause a scene this Halloween, why not dress up as the one, the only, Iron Man! A brief look on Pinterest will give you some inspiration of just how much effort can go into creating a handmade Iron Man suit!

If creativity is not your forte, then you can also buy pre-made Iron Man Halloween costumes online. Iron Man morph suits are available for the daring man while cute Iron Man themed onesies are great if you want to stay warm and cozy while trick or treating. There are even Iron Man themed crop tops and short sets available for girls who want to look hot this Halloween.

The Joker

The Joker is an extremely popular character that always makes an appearance come Halloween. If you don’t mind bumping into other Jokers, and if you have someone who is able to do some semi-decent make-up, then the Joker could be for you.

A purple suit, green shirt, and tie are all synonymous with the Joker, but it’s that classic face paint and eerie stretched smiling mouth that really makes this character. Print off some images to copy when you are having your make-up done to make sure that you get the look just right.

Pop Art Comic Character

A creative Halloween costume that has become popular in recent years is that of the Pop Art comic character inspired costume. These characters look like they have just been pulled straight out of a comic with Roy Lichtenstein inspired make-up, bright clothes, and fun Pop Art signs.

Creativity is the key to making an excellent outfit that works well, so make sure you get practicing with your make up skills early on and it should all come together nicely. There are plenty of comic-book inspired costumes on Pinterest.

So there you have it, six of the best Halloween costume ideas for the comic lover. Remember, you can always add your own personal touches to an outfit with fun wigs, different make-up, freaky accessories, trick or treat bags, and of course fake blood. Happy Halloween!

Be The Pirate Fairy This Summer Just Add Wings With Just Pretend Kids Costumes

April 23, 2014 by Momstart 2 Comments

The Pirate Fairy came out a month ago and my daughter adores her and the entire Tinker Bell crew so she’s already jumping at the bits to be the Pirate Fairy for Halloween and now that we have the Pirate Princess costume from Just Pretend Kids that we received for a review all she has to do is add some fairy wings.

DSC00242Just Pretend Kids, a new company that makes high quality dress up costumes that inspire children to explore and celebrate their own creative spirit.  While tech toys are certainly a hot trend, it’s important not to forget to let kids use their imagination!  Playing dress up and pretending to be a princess, a pirate, or a dragon is a great way for children to explore and learn about the world and about themselves.  DSC00244

My kids both love to play pretend and make believe and dressing the part makes it even more fun. That’s why we have a sword like the one she is holding too. They love to play and I love to listen to the stories they make up. It’s really important in my opinion that you help your kids keep an active imagination instead of letting them play video games all day long. This way they get exercise in their mind and in their bodies.

DSC00243

Just Pretend® tutus, wands, wings, accessories and children costumes are made with values for quality, comfort and value in mind. When you hold the costumes you will feel how soft they are. Just Pretend uses the finest tulle with just the right finish to make their tutus. Their wands are made to minimize danger from sharp points or dangerous materials. They do not sell any items that they would not want their own children or grandchildren to wear or play with.

I find that the quality of the Pirate Princess costume is amazing. The detail goes all throughout the costume from the jacket to the dress underneath. My daughter loved her costume and didn’t want to take it off. Her dad had to ask her to take it off for dinner and against her will she complied. She’s going to make a fantastic Pirate Fairy this Halloween.

Just add wings!

4 Easter Decorating Ideas

4 Easter Decorating Ideas

This was brought to you by our partners at CLE.

Easter lands on April 20th this year. I can hardly believe that it’s already spring – 2014 got off to a bit of a stunted start in my household, with Jai and I being struck down with 4 different severe colds in as many months. Worst flu season ever!!! In fact, I must confess, I didn’t get my Christmas tree taken down until February – yeah, I know, I know! With as much DayQuil as I’ve had to take to make it through the beginning of this year, I’ve done the best I can. 😉

Now that April is here and I’m hopefully starting to get over this latest virus, my attention has turned towards Easter ideas! I wanted to share 5 fun tips for getting your house Easter-Bunny ready.

#1: Consider Candy Alternatives

Although it’s traditional to deck the house out with large chocolate bunnies and baskets full of candy, not everyone will be indulging this year. Since we just started a diet program, we won’t be stuffing our faces with sweets this year; but that doesn’t mean we won’t be able to have fun! Check out this unique Easter basket Jai’s grandma made several years ago – the “Basket” is made out of toilet paper and holds several colorfully-dyed hardboiled eggs! This is a great conversation piece for a room that doesn’t add tons of calories.

Toilet paper Easter basket

No, this photo wasn’t taken with a potato – this snapshot is from the stone ages, also known as 2004!

#2: Recycle Your Decorations

I love the look and feel that strands of light bulbs provide, so I like to decorate with them all year long – not just at Christmas! We originally bought these white LED lights to use at Halloween, and then we strung them up in the upstairs room to provide nice, soft track lighting for the December holidays and beyond. Check out year-round purveyors of holiday lighting, like ChristmasLightsEtc.com, and look for strands of lights in yellows and blues. These look great strung on a mantle with other Easter decorations!

Twinkling lights in the driveway

#3: Think Pink

Easter is all about pastels, so dig out those baby blue and pink tablecloths, yellow napkins, and pale green table runners. Light colors lend the right ambiance for Easter without you having to run out and buy a whole slew of bunny-adorned decorations.

#4: Decorate Yourself!

Besides putting on your Easter best, consider getting into the festive spirit by decorating yourself! Easter egg earrings, bunny boutineers, and other themed jewelry is a great way to show your fun side for the holiday. A few years ago, I picked up a bunny ears headband at a local store and wore it with a business suit to work!

Now it’s your turn: Where do YOU get Easter decoration inspiration? Magazines? Pinterest? Somewhere else?

The Ugglys Pug Disgusting & Gross Electronic Pup Pet

December 17, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

I want to introduce you to Moose Toys’ newest brand of electronic burping and farting pets, the Ugglys. Wow, I was surprised at the cost of the Ugglys Pug. It’s a Disgusting & Gross Electronic Pup pet that will have your family ages 3 to 99 laughing out loud at the gross bodily sounds that come out of it. I created a video so you could hear the sounds it makes.

IMG_0019

If your kids are going thru that stage where any disgusting bodily function is the height of sophisticated humor, when they will love it since the pug simply makes long drawn-out burp/fart sounds.

image

If you have a short fuze though you won’t want your kids to have this toy as they will be making potty noises for hours. I think it’s actually a fantastic gag gift or a perfect white elephant toy.  (this will not be going under our tree)

In addition to making over 30 rude, repulsive and hilarious noises, each mischievous mutt comes with an attitude that can be “tuned” to further amuse kids big and small by using the warp feature on its collar! Both parents and kids are sure to love these crazy canines, whether they’re partaking in the repulsive fun with their kids or using them to play tricks on their siblings.

Thanksgiving Family Fave Veggie Casserole

Gift card and supplies provided by Country Crock for recipe creation.

Thanksgiving is just days away, so crowd-pleasing recipes are on our minds. Today I have a casserole recipe to share with you that is great in its versatility: You can use this either as dish to serve on the big day itself, as a great way to repurpose leftover vegetables after Thanksgiving, or even prepare it with frozen veggies as a quick-and-easy meal option during the hectic days leading up to the holiday. Friends, may I introduce my take on Country Crock’s Thanksgiving Family Fave Veggie Casserole:

Thanksgiving Family Fave Veggie Casserole
Author: Beeb Ashcroft (Adapted from Country Crock's recipe)
Recipe type: Side

Ingredients
  • 2 C chopped onion
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
  • 1 C chopped Brussels sprouts
  • 1 C chopped, cored sweet red mini peppers
  • 2 C frozen corn
  • 3 C frozen broccoli, cauliflower and carrot mix
  • 1 C frozen green beans
  • ½ C Country Crock spread, divided
  • 1½ C shredded medium cheddar cheese
  • ¾ panko bread crumbs
Instructions
  1. Melt ¼ C Country Crock Spread in a skillet, add onion and garlic, and cook until very slightly browned.
  2. Add panko bread crumbs to skillet and lightly toast, then remove mixture from pan and put aside in a bowl.
  3. Melt remaining ¼ C Country Crock Spread in the skillet, add vegetables and toss to coat with Country Crock, then remove from heat.
  4. Add half the vegetables to a 2 qt. dish, then sprinkle with half the bread crumb mixture followed by half of cheese. Repeat this with the remaining vegetables, bread crumbs and cheese.
  5. Bake at 375 degrees until done, roughly 20-25 minutes.

The nice thing about a casserole like this is how easily it can be adapted. I chose to use a combination of frozen ingredients with fresh, so that I could keep it quick and simple while still testing out my awesome new WÜSTHOF knife that came in my casserole package!

Chopped onions

Brussels sprouts

Chopping Brussels sprouts

This casserole is very straightforward to make.

Frying onions and garlic

Panko bread crumbs

Vegetables in the skillet

I didn’t have a 2 qt. baking dish, so I decided to divide this between two 1.5 qt dishes instead. To do this, I adapted the instructions and only did one layer of breadcrumbs in each pan, adding an extra 3/4 cup cheese so that each casserole had cheese in both the middle and top layers. I didn’t divvy them up evenly enough so I ended up with one large casserole and one very small casserole. But it didn’t matter because it still tasted good!

Here’s the finished product:

This casserole was really tasty! The flavors works really well together. I served this with breaded fish last night and it made for a yummy dinner!

How Much Time Do You Spend Party Planning? Survey Says: Ages!

November 19, 2013 by Beeb Leave a Comment

Kenmore

I was a guest at the Kenmore Blogger Summit last month. This post wasn’t required or related to the event, I just thought it would be fun to share it!

At the Kenmore Blogger Summit last month, we spent a lot of time discussing holiday party prep, common pitfalls and ways to save time and make preparations easier. Last week, Kenmore announced the results of their new holiday survey revealing what average Americans struggle with most this time of year. A poll of 1,000 adults conducted by Wakefield Research came up with some surprising and not-so-surprising findings:

  • 85% of people surveyed avoid making a specific holiday food because of the resulting cleanup. I can TOTALLY relate to this – when I see certain recipes, I get a vision in my head of my trashed kitchen and “Nope” right out of that cookbook. Now that I own a dishwasher, I’m a lot more bold with what I’m willing to make because the cleanup is so much easier than scrubbing every single dish by hand.
  • An average of 5 hours are spent prepping, cooking, and cleaning for holiday parties. Only 5?! It takes me so much longer to prepare for parties. I think back to the times I’ve pulled all-nighters getting ready for my big Halloween parties, rolling bat-shaped cheeseballs by hand. I think I might need to scale back just a tad. 😉
  • 61% percent surveyed have found party leftovers in strange places like under the couch (35%) and under the bed (10%). I am now feeling so grateful that I have never found a plate of moldy hot wings under my bed after a party.
  • More than 1 in 3 said they have waited a day or more after a party to clean up. Guilty as charged!!
  • 79% of respondents would prefer a practical holiday/hostess gift over a trendy novelty item. This makes total sense to me. I love finding presents that I know someone can really use! I received a breadmaker as a gift for my 25th birthday and it’s one of my favorite things – it was one of those life-changing appliances for me! In fact, Kim received a Kenmore breadmaker during the gift swap at the blogger summit, and I was excitedly telling her how much she was going to love it. Hahaha!

Do any of these findings surprise you? What is your biggest struggle during holiday party-planning?

Kenmore Blogger Summit: Day One Recap #HolidayHosting

October 28, 2013 by Beeb 9 Comments

Kenmore Blogger Summit

Travel and related consideration provided by Kenmore.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Kenmore Blogger Summit in Chicago, Illinois. This fun gathering brings together bloggers to check out the latest appliance innovations and see how they might help them in the kitchen – especially important with the holidays around the corner. “Holiday Hosting” was was this year’s theme, with bloggers bringing recipes and tips for making the season bright.

Kenmore Christmas Tree

To get us all into the spirit, they decked out the studio with a full blown Christmas tree, topped with a spatula. Isn’t that adorable?

Utensil Tree Topper

Bauble

Bow

Golden Bauble

Bow & Bauble

To welcome us, they served cocktails and a delicious dinner buffet. The appetizers which were served were actually favorite recipes submitted by several bloggers in attendance!

Salad

Sweet Potatoes

Brussels Sprouts

Chicken & Salmon

Desserts

Coffee & Wine

The proceedings were hosted by the wonderful Chef Kari Karch and the awesome Kenmore team. Kari shared some neat “Holiday Hacks” for making the season easier, such as adding chilling a glass of wine by adding frozen grapes, or putting a pair of too-tight shoes in the freezer with a bag of water to stretch them and make them more comfy for holiday parties:

Shoes in The Freezer!

Another suggestion was to add a festive fragrance to your home by sprinkling cinnamon on the carpet and then vacuuming.

Cinnamon in Carpet

After we had gotten a chance to eat and mingle, they brought out Brandon Ogborn, a stand-up comic who recently auditioned for Lorne Michaels. “Yeah, Lorne asked me to do SNL this week and I said, ‘Nah, I’ve got this Kenmore thing,'” he quipped. He brought out two comediennes, who helped with his efforts to dramatically retell holiday disaster stories. Each blogger had submitted a story about their most hilarious holiday mishaps, and Brandon called several of the funniest onstage to tell their epic stories. One of my favorites was the story of well-meaning parents who mistook a pan of frozen ground beef for Tiramisu and unwittingly served it to their guests who were too polite to say anything!

Brandon Ogborn & Friends

After they read out a few blogger stories, the comedians also shared a few stories they had written, inspired by the blogger accounts they had read. It was pretty funny to see these guys embrace the bizarre angle and have fun integrating snippets about Kenmore appliance features in their stand-up comedy!

Hotel Felix

After the entertainment, we headed back to the cozy Hotel Felix and hit the hay for a little shut-eye after a long day of fun and travel!

Creating a Frightful Front Yard For Halloween!

October 20, 2013 by Beeb 6 Comments

Creating a Frightful Front Yard For Halloween!

Gift cards were provided by our spookactular sponsor Kmart in order to pick up decorations!

Last week, Jai and I made a trip to Kmart to pick up everything we’d need to create our best Halloween display yet! This weekend, we set about setting it all up (Ha!) – here’s a little sneak peek of our haunted house, along with some DIY tips for your own ghoulish goings-on!

Knocking down cobwebs

The first thing I did was get my porch prettied up by knocking down cobwebs. You would think that a Halloween party would be the one time I’d want to leave cobwebs around for effect, but I seem to end up cleaning up the real spiderwebs and replacing them with fake ones. What’s wrong with me?! 😉

Spider Decoration Vs. Real Spider

While I worked on replacing real arachnids with fake ones, Jai was setting up our light display in the driveway.

Putting up lights

Lights & Leaves

Strand of Lights

Red Bulb

Stringing Up Red Lights

This is “Marcus The Carcass”, who looks like he’s trying to crawl out of the leaves!

Marcus The Carcass

Next, we began setting up our DIY photobooth!

How to Create a Homemade Halloween Photobooth

These were the supplies we bought to make our homemade Halloween photobooth:

Items For Creating Our Halloween Photobooth

  • Canon Rebel T3
  • Lowepro Adventura Camera Shoulder Bag
  • Targus Tripod
  • Craftsman Work Light with 60 LED Lights
  • Essential Home Curtain Rod
  • Essential Home 5-Piece Black Curtains
  • Essential Home Halloween Tablecloth

The first step was taking the Halloween tablecloth and nailing it to one side of the porch to create the backdrop.

Photobooth Backdrop

Braaaains!!!

Next, we installed two small hooks in the porch roof and tied two pieces of twine to them, which were used to hang the curtain rod.

Hanging Curtain Rod

Finally, we hung the curtains to form the front of the photobooth area and frame the pictures.

Photobooth Curtains

The LED light is hung by twine using the same hooks supporting the curtain rod and hidden behind the curtain. Since we have a number of other lights on the porch as part of the display, we had no trouble plugging it in. The light put too much glare in the photos at first, so we wrapped a plastic bag around it to deflect some of the light. Fancy, I know. 😉

LED Light

To snap photos, simply have your subject stand in front of the backdrop and use your tripod to capture their portrait, as Jai so kindly demonstrates here:

Jai Tests The Photobooth

We also discovered an unexpected way to use the photobooth that is perfect for Halloween. Since we set it up on our porch, the photobooth directly faces a window, and Jai noticed that it was reflecting his image back in the window. He told me to turn the camera around to take a “Selfie” of our reflection – with all of the lights and decorations, it makes us look like ghosts! This is our ghostly selfie, straight out of the camera – no editing or Instagram filters necessary for this spookacular effect!

Ghostly Selfie

Another DIY project that we took some time with was our “Pepper’s Ghost“, an illusion which is created when you reflect an image using a piece of glass.

Pepper's Ghost

This illusion is often created by propping a piece of plexiglass over a TV, as demonstrated in this video; we actually used a vintage jewelry display cabinet which we already owned, since it not only allowed a spot for the flatscreen to sit, but its lid was much easier to prop up than a freestanding piece of glass. We ran a black piece of cord through the latch on the lid and tied it to a hook in the ceiling:

Hook For Pepper's Ghost

The cord actually belongs to the Tekky Toys Scary Flying Ghost, which we had hooked up in the living room so that it could “Fly” by the window and create a fun effect. It made sense to tie both of these together, literally and figuratively. Har har!

Living Room Ghosts

Once the TV and piece of glass was in place, we could get started with the fun part. Since the RCA 24″ LED Flatscreen HDTV that we bought for this can also hook up to a computer, we simply plugged it in to my PC and used it to play an animated GIF. We set the display case up on a card table in the living room, so the illusion would be shown in the front yard – here’s a short video to give you an idea of what it looks like:

I created the animated GIF of the floating head myself. I did this by propping up my Totally Ghoul Light Up Reaper with Flames in front of the black plastic tub I bought and filmed a short video of it with the Canon Rebel. I then converted the video to a GIF with openAviToGif, and played it at fullscreen on my computer, creating an endless loop. We adjusted the contrast on the TV to reduce the backlight glare as much as possible. Since the display case does have a border around it, we minimized its appearance by pulling the curtains partly shut and taping black fabric over the top and bottom of the lid.

Here is the floating head GIF that I made for this Pepper’s Ghost illusion – please feel free to use it for your own haunted house illusions!

Floating Head

So there’s your sneaky peek at what we’ve been working on thus far – I will be unveiling my finished haunted house the week of Halloween, so check back to see how all of my devious decor turned out! In the meantime, I’d love to hear how all your Halloween decorating is coming!

A Quick Birthday Gift Guide for Boys and Girls Moose Toys

August 14, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

We received some samples from Moose Toys and find that they are a great resource to just have on hand for upcoming birthdays. Kids love them. My kids certainly do, we’ve even tested out the toys before as part of our holiday gift guide last Christmas. These are just their newest additions to their already popular lines.

Moose Toys. Since 2011, the toy and collectibles company has launched several popular and award-winning brands in the U.S., including The Trash Pack, Blingles, and Micro Chargers. This spring, Moose is adding new items to each line that children will be thrilled to find in their stack of birthday presents!image005

Girls will be excited to see their favorite craft lines return with the Gelarti Scene Creator and Blingles Mega Bling Accessory Pack. Both brands make it easy for kids to brighten up or add sparkle to their accessories, as kids can create scenery stickers with Gelarti or ‘bling’ their cell phones, mp3 players, and jewelry to life with Blingles.   Zoe of course loves both and it’s hard to convince her to give them to her friends, but her friends usually let her help play with them during play dates and things. image001

Young collectors will be thrilled to see The Trash Pack introduce its newest addition to the putrid gang with the Ultimate Fighting Trashies Battle Arena, as it sets the stage for the ultimate clash of trash! And, fans of the mini, super charged race cars Micro Chargers will be excited to race their opponents with the Crash Zone Track – until they crash, of course!

clip_image001

Miles loves his Micro Chargers and the other day he was looking for them. I told him, you haven’t played with them in forever so I gave them away. He started crying and I felt like a very guilty mom. You never know what they might randomly want to play with.
