Tips to Celebrate Martin Luther King Day #MLKDay

January 15, 2017 by Momstart Leave a Comment

We are re-sharing this information because we feel that it’s really important to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. My kids and I will be walking over to a memorial in DC in his honor and going to a museum. These five tips come from YouGiveGood’s President and CEO Lisa Tomasi.

1) Organize your workplace, school or community group. Maximize your impact by organizing a group to serve the community with an activity done at your own location in honor of Martin Luther King Day. Choose a local charity and determine the best way for your group to show support. Ideas include packing snack bags for after school programs, collecting coats and hats for a homeless shelter, planting trees, creating a mentoring program, or writing letters of support to our military abroad.

2) Teach your children. The kids are home from school. Remember, as a Day of Service MLK day is supposed to be “a day on, not a day off.” Plan an activity of service and involve your children. Show by your example that volunteerism is important to your family and help to cultivate a new generation of compassionate, community- minded citizens.

3) Raise needed goods. Support a local charity with a drive for the goods they need to serve the community. An online YouGiveGoods drive is the new way to raise food and supplies for charity. You can set up your drive in a matter of minutes and have it underway in time for MLK Day this year. Then invite your online community via email and social media to support your cause by purchasing items that will ship to your selected charity. A YouGiveGoods drive builds up your community as it offers tangible aid to local charity and it provides a welcome opportunity for your friends and family to be part of this year’s MLK Day.

4) Spread the message. Use social media (use hashtag #MLKDay) to share MLK’s ideals and inspiring words. You will find his words to be stunningly timely and relevant in today’s world. Forward this page, talk about what you will do in honor of MLK Day, and encourage your circle of friends to take action to support the community.

5) Commit to service in 2017. Use Martin Luther King’s example to plan a 2017 where you take action. If you are unable to volunteer on January 16, simply spend some time researching, choose your charity, make that phone call and find out how you can best serve them in the future. Charities need help all year long!

New Monster High Toys From Mattel

December 4, 2016 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Monster High, Mattel’s popular brand of fashion dolls, has unveiled some new toys and holiday favorites this year that are sure to be on many girls wish lists. Monster High brings to life the sons and daughters of the world’s most famous monsters like Frankie Stein™, daughter of Frankenstein, Draculaura™, a descendant of Dracula and their ghoulfriends. My daughter is all too familiar with Monster High as she watches tons of it on Netflix. I’ve probably seen plenty of it myself but the only episode I remember is the episode with Draculaura, and you’re probably going to laugh at me and say she’s in a ton of the movies. I would ask my daughter but I’m on a plane on my way to a press trip.

Mattel’s Monster High sent us two of their most popular toys this holiday to review. Zoe and I did a few videos. She did an overview video of the two toys, The Monster High Two Headed Styling Head and the Monster High™ Welcome To Monster High™ Dance the Fright Away .

We Did a box opening of the Dance the Fright Away playset and she put the set together.

And we did a video of what all came in the box for the Monster High Two Headed Styling Head.

She really wanted to keep the Two Headed Styling Head but I know some little girls that need a really good Christmas this year so we’re going to send it off to them. They will love it too!!!

I think this playset is really cool because it’s like a rocking stage and she can take photos of the doll with the stand. She can also put the set together mostly herself. There was something she was a little confused about that you can see in the video.

Mattel also released:

Top Trending Toys For Christmas

December 1, 2015 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Here are some cool trending toys and we agree whole heartedly. We even personally tested three of them. These toys range from not just play but to cutting-edge tech, classic role-play fun. We had fun with the Redwood Venture’s IDO3D Art Studio, Stikbot Studio from Zing and Pinblock. My kids have been building amazing things with Pinblock, fun videos with Stikbot and creatures with IDO3D.

SAM_0109Here is our list of Trending Toys!

Cutting edge tech trending on social media:

  • Stikbot Studio from Zing – is a new social media toy with a free app that lets kids easily create awesome stop-motion videos starring the neon Stikbot figures.  Using the #Stikbot hashtag, kids can share their videos on social media. SAM_0114

Stikbot is really cool because it keeps the kids busy for a while. It takes so many photos to do one video.

Stocking stuffers featuring must-have fashion fun and El Nino prep:

  • HipFits – the absolute must-have to clip on to backpacks, gym bags and more! It’s the hip clip-on accessory that gives girls the chance to get in on the hot trend of personalizing accessories that’s making headlines on the pages of People StyleWatch, Vogue and more. Great ornament for the tree, too!
  • With El Nino on its way to deliver a rainy holiday, ShedRain’s Wind Pro Auto-Open/Auto-Close umbrella is the stocking stuffer must-have of the season.

Classic role-play fun – made in the USA:

  • American Plastic Toys features Cozy Comforts Kitchen – a true holiday gifting classic: this kid-sized kitchen features the latest in kitchen design including a single-cup coffee machine, a smartphone, recycling bins and more – all for just $35.

Creative Play:

  • Redwood Venture’s IDO3D Art Studio sets use technology to bring amazing artwork to life! These specially crafted drawing pens contain 3D printing ink that magically transforms liquid into solid in just seconds. Use the pen to draw numerous designs, either from their own imagination or from the 3D Guidebook included with the set.

IDO3D is majorly trending on Youtube. My daughter made a video and her Youtube account is really new. It has 1300 views on it. I’ve seen that other people’s videos have even more video on them. It’s crazy fun to do.

  • All Pinblock sets have one piece that can twist, turn, stack or lay flat, allowing for non-stop 3D building. The unique pixel-like round connecting pins allow for building planes, buildings, utilities, wearable gadgets and more!

3 British Horror Classics You Should Have in Your eBook Library

October 21, 2015 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Slaying the dragon of delay? For those times when you’ve got hours of waiting time to kill until your flight or until the next bus arrives, here are a few horror classics in your eReader to keep you wide-awake and at the edge of your seat:

1. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The book also goes by another title, The Modern Prometheus. It stars off with Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a mad scientist whose brilliance skills in the laboratory lead him to experiment with cadavers and create something terrifying, a force that eventually grows out of control. Titular character though he might be, the story doesn’t belong to Frankenstein at all. At its core, the novel is overtaken by the manic energy, confusion and loneliness of the Monster. Some readers will question the binaries laid down here. Who is the real monster? Because Shelley ingeniously gives the Creature a complex mind, one that asks us what it ultimately means to be human. His intelligence is striking, even more so given the expectation most of us have of monsters: irrational, inarticulate, evil. The juxtaposition between his ‘human-ness’—his search for companionship, his desire for acceptance—is only eclipsed by the monstrous arrogance of his creator, Frankenstein. The book has spawned countless reviews—from the Independent’s discussion on the possible lack of authorial control over the characters to questions about grief in the text posed by Kirkus Reviews.I t has also been rendered in many forms, from films that take the struggle between man and artificial life onto the big screen to plays that bring another level of interaction between the story and the audience. And yet, the story of a creator who fails to find anything to love in his creation and the loneliness of a creature who struggles and wails against the fate that he’ll be alone forever, remains as fresh as the day Shelley must have penned these words on paper. So the next time you log into your account to buy ebooks from Nook, don’t forget to add this eBook to your reading list if you haven’t already.

2. Dracula by Bram Stroker. If you’ve got a taste for stories that scare the daylights out of you, this is one solid entry on the list. This 19th century piece of gothic horror proves why it’s The Vampire Novel to read, says The Guardian. With journal entries full of paranoia and clammy, cold fear to mysterious illnesses, dark castles and untimely deaths caused by unexplained puncture wounds to the neck—what we all know and recognize as vampire bites due to our pop culture education—this tale delivers chills down your spine. If you like your villains sinister, you might even find yourself rooting more for Dracula than for the book’s two lovers, Mina and Jonathan. Of course, we all know how it ends. But that doesn’t make the story any less absorbing or The Count any less seductive. If your only education in vampire literature is The Twilight series, do yourself a favor: download these eBook into your eReader now and gain more than a passing acquaintance with the book that launched vampires into popular literature. Whether you start reading its passages on the train from work or late at night in bed with the lights out, you’ll resurface from those pages with a wary look over your shoulder, ready to jump at the shadows, your heart in your throat.

3. The Complete Tales and Poems by Edgar Allan Poe. If you want something shorter, this collection from one of the most well-known literary figures in the horror genre is perfect. Psychologically acute, densely written and mind-bending, Poe has made mystery and madness come together in ways that will make the hairs on your skin stand.Tales cover long-standing friends with deep-seated grudges to beautiful women waking from the dead. Still a master at delivering disquiet, Poe’s ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ remains an undisputed favorite among lovers of the mystery short story. If you’ve never read this one before, you’ll be in for a treat. And if you’re rereading this on your eReader, be prepared to be taken in again by the narrative’s energy—one that borders on the possessed—and its darkness—bleak, engrossing and still as seductive as ever.

These literary classics from three of the best and most well-known names in British horror are a great addition to your eBook library. Explore more works from other well-loved masters at horror. Don’t forget Lovecraft and Henry James, who are but two names off a long list.

Haven’t read much horror literature? If you want something to start with, these three will give you the best welcome into the genre. Be warned, though: expect a terrible case of incipient fear with every page you turn. So do yourself a favor before you get into bed and start reading: don’t put the lights out. And don’t let the bed bugs—or otherwise—bite.

Something New for the Holidays

October 30, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Getting something new for the holidays should be on everybody’s list this year, even if you have to get it yourself. And what better gift for the small business owner than a system to track inventory and sales, integrate a store location with an eCommerce store, and work with the back office accounting software? It’s called a point-of-sale system, and it’s the hottest gift small business person on your list.

clip_image002It’s the Thought That Counts

When you’re thinking about getting a POS, there are lots of different things to consider. It’s a really good thing that price is no longer one of them. There was a time when a computer-based point-of-sale system was for the big players only, and cost upwards of $20,000 for each station. While looking at a traditional point-of-sale cash wrap the cost can still be pretty intimidating, but there are alternatives out there for more suitable for smaller businesses that are still growing. Tablet-based point-of-sale systems are scalable and flexible additions to any business, capable of integrating your store or stockroom and your back office. The tablet acts as a CPU for your point-of-sale and with web-based software will find yourself capable of generating enough information to really make some good positive changes for your store.

Head in the Clouds

You might be asking what does the cloud have to do with anything? Once a buzzword solely for the geek literate, cloud-based software and storage solutions have brought down the price of accounting software, creative suites, and productivity suites. Cloud-based storage has fueled the expansion of e-commerce platforms like Shopify, that offer high-end websites with high-end features even the smallest businesses.

Software in storage as service is what enables the tablet-based point-of-sale system to be such an effective tool for small business. In fact, Inc. magazine projects that in less than six years, 80 percent of small businesses will be using cloud-based tools for their daily operations.

By using cloud-based solutions you can also have a scalable system no matter how many locations you have or individual stations you deploy. Control is centralized with varying levels of access controlled by passwords. So you could easily create policies such as having a manager approve returns or refunds, while allowing sales associates only basic access or ringing up sales. And with cloud-based software will always be able to keep an eye on the store from no matter where you are. Thinking of your point-of-sale system as part of your security setup makes a lot of sense. Security cameras can only show you when something has gone wrong. The Houston Chronicle points out that your point-of-sale system can actually prevent or even reverse the shrinkage that you may not even know about. Shrinkage is 50 percent internal thefts, 30 percent shoplifting, and 20 percent user errors or other factors. Keeping an eye on the cash drawer and the inventory with information rich reports means that there are fewer opportunities for errors or other actions more deliberate.

Going Live

The basic principle of inventory control, according to logistics management, is to streamline your ordering so that the flow of goods to your store is enough to satisfy your customers’ needs, while at the same time minimizing your cash outlay. The first step to inventory control is creating a live inventory. Taking your inventory live is a multistep process. If you normally close to take inventory at the end of the year that would be an ideal time to begin implementing your new point-of-sale. You will need to create a master list of all the products that you have in stock. Then you will need to create barcodes for them if they do not already exist, and sticker everything you have preparatory to beginning the inventory. Proceed sequentially with each staff member assigned to a specific area where they will scan every item into stock, and then mark the section complete with a sticker or a Post-It so that items are not double counted. You may find that there are significant discrepancies between what your new life inventory shows and what you thought you had. You will need to reconcile this new inventory with your previous accountings.

While it may seem like a lot of work for a present, you will find that a point-of-sale system is the gift that keeps on giving. Inventory management, and data driven ordering policies can help you to streamline both your cash flow and the flow of products from receiving to your showroom or Internet store. It’s also absolutely critical that you do not forget to implement policies that will keep your inventory data to date, and have all users on the system abide by them. Failing to abide by these policies will turn your life inventory into a zo

Reducing Stress During The Holidays: 4 Tips

October 29, 2014 by Beeb 2 Comments

Reducing Stress During The Holidays

This is a partnered post.

It’s supposed to be “The most wonderful time of the year”, but we all know that the holiday season can also bring undue stress. With schedules becoming more overloaded and hectic than ever before, holiday pressure becomes compounded to the point where everyone seems frazzled. And yet, we can’t seem to stop the seasonal stress! Managing overload is an ongoing process for all of us – here are a few strategies that I’ve developed over the years:

  • Think carefully about your priorities. What do you most value doing this time of year? What are your traditions – and do you really enjoy them? It can be easy to do things out of obligation or just because “That’s what you do”. If you stop and identify the things you most love about the holiday season, it allows you to focus on things that are rewarding and cut out anything that isn’t necessary. There are some things that are non-negotiable parts of Christmas for me (Like having a tree) and other things that are fun, but won’t derail the holiday if they don’t happen (Like making a gingerbread house). Make sure that whatever you’re spending time on is truly important to you!
  • Say “No” when necessary – even if it breaks with tradition. This is really difficult for me to do, and not just during the holidays. I don’t like letting people down, and I don’t want to miss out on anything myself. But after years of pushing myself to the breaking point, I’m slowly embracing “No”. For example, I’m known for hosting epic Halloween parties every year – a tradition that began when I was 19 and has continued to this day. But I had to take a few years off from doing it when work and health issues made it impossible for me to throw my usual shindig. It was a big disappointment to everyone – most of all, me! – but after having a break, I was able to come back with Halloween parties that were better than ever!
  • Don’t be afraid of change. The one constant in life is change, and the holidays can be an emotional reminder of this. As the years go by, families grow, move around, and bring new ideas and ways of celebrating into the fold. This can often be a bone of contention, so if you’re struggling with this, one thing that is helpful is to try and focus on the new traditions that are being created rather than dwelling on how things used to be. And if you remember point #1, you can make sure that you’re still observing what matters to you – regardless of whether your siblings still want to open their presents at midnight or not.
  • Accept that the season will have speedbumps no matter what – and try to see the funny side! Pies will be burnt, ornaments will break, and Uncle Steve will have too much Wassail before caroling. Accept the fact now that not everything will go to plan over the holidays – and try to laugh off the ridiculousness whenever possible!

For more ideas on managing holiday pressure, you might want to check out Molina Healthcare’s article, “Tips to Handle Stress“, which outlines more coping strategies – for the holidays, and beyond!
