The Legend of Mr. Ween Book Review

October 28, 2019 by Beeb Leave a Comment

The Legend of Mr. Ween
This is a sponsored post.

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. From costumes to candy, decorations to pumpkin patches, I love everything Halloween-related and try to get into the “Spirit” all month long. I think there’s nothing quite so cozy as curling up with a spooky book and a hot cup of pumpkin-spice-anything on a crisp Fall day, and I had the chance to do just that when I was introduced to The Legend of Mr. Ween by Daren Ross.

Combining elements of folklore and fantasy, The Legend of Mr. Ween spins an imaginative tale of the very first Halloween. The book opens with a mysterious traveler, Hal, arriving in Boston to seek work. Although the story is set in 1905, the frenetic pace of the city mirrors 2019 life, with the townspeople distracted, rushing around at breakneck pace and becoming increasingly more aggressive. Kind-hearted Hal senses that something is deeply wrong – and just as the hectic energy of the city belies something much more sinister, there is more to Hal than meets the eye as well.

What struck me the most about this short story is that the author clearly shares my warm feelings about Halloween. Most Halloween tales are horror-based, and while there are nefarious forces in The Legend of Mr. Ween, the focus of the narrative is on lighting up the darkness and triumphing over evil with kindness and positivity. Hal is a lovable figure, and the origins of Halloween traditions such as pumpkin carving are explained in a very charming way. This unique Halloween tale combines magic and battles against evil with the feelgood spirit of an uplifting Christmas story. I’m not personally a fan of scary stories, so I appreciated this take – I’ve always felt like Halloween was a time for childlike joy and fun, and it’s nice to see that I’m not the only one!

Recipe: Zombie Cookies With Pumpkin Spice “Blood” Icing

October 30, 2017 by Beeb 1 Comment

Zombie cookies
Product & gift card provided.
I love Halloween and pumpkins, so naturally, I’m a big pumpkin spice fan. As fate would have it this year, I even got a big box of pumpkin spice baking supplies in the mail the day before I made my annual pumpkin patch trip – is that good timing, or what?!

Krusteaz Pumpkin Spice
This package of goodies came from Krusteaz, makers of delicious baking mixes. I’m a big fan of their products, so when I found out that they had a nice line of pumpkin spice treats, I knew I had to try them out. The new PSL-inspired line includes Pumpkin Spice Muffins, Pumpkin Spice Cookies, and Pumpkin Spice Quick Bread. I have been enjoying these mixes all month, whipping up delicious seasonal treats in no time flat. The cookies, muffins and bread are all super fast and easy to make, and are incredibly delicious – these treats disappear fast around here!

Krusteaz challenged me to use one of the new pumpkin spice mixes to create a spooktacular Halloween recipe. If you’re as busy as I am this year, then you’re going to love what I came up with – adorable zombie cookies that you can make in a hurry!

Zombie Cookies With Pumpkin Spice “Blood” Icing

Zombie Cookies With Pumpkin Spice “Blood” Icing

Ingredients

  • 1 box Krusteaz Pumpkin Spice Cookies Mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1 stick butter or margarine
  • 4 tsp. cold water
  • 6 drops of red food coloring
  • Gummy zombie hand lollipops
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, stir the cookie mix, butter, and egg together with a wooden spoon. Using butter gives the cookies a richer flavor, but margarine works also. You may need to use your hands to fully knead the butter into the mix.
  2. Cover a baking sheet with foil and spritz with cooking spray. Use an ice cream scoop to measure out the dough onto the sheet - you want to make the cookies a little extra large to provide a deep base for the gummy hands, so you should end up with around 9 cookies total.
  3. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 16 minutes or until done. Remove from the tray and onto a cooking rack.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the spiced vanilla glaze packet (included in the Krusteaz mix) with the water and food coloring. Drizzle the glaze over the cookies so that it resembles blood. (Tip: Place a cutting board or foil underneath the cooling rack to catch the drips from the glaze.) Allow the glaze to harden for a few minutes, then stick a gummy hand into each cookie to complete the look. These lollipops are specifically designed to decorate cupcakes and other baked goods - look for them in the Halloween display at your local grocery store, or online. Mine were by Candi-Fetti and came in a package of 8, but there seem to be a few brands in the gummy-zombie business these days!

It’s October so it’s time to make cute and fun Halloween treats. I’m quite excited by these really cute and easy to make Halloween Bats.

Marshmallow Bats Recipe

Ingredients:

· Square Marshmallows

bat 4

Directions:

1. Begin by cutting the top of each marshmallow off. About a ¼ of an inch.

2. Next, on the other end, cut a small chunk out of each corner so the wings become apparent.

3. Place on a wooden skewer and trim the stick if need be.

4. Melt your chocolate however you desire. I used the microwave which only takes a few seconds. Follow the directions on your package.

5. Add 4-5 drops black food coloring to the melted chocolate and do this quickly.

6. Begin spooning the chocolate over each marshmallow, one at a time.

7. Place on a pan covered in wax paper.

8. Immediately place eyes on each bat before the chocolate melts.

9. Allow to cool thoroughly.

10. Once cool, use the gel frosting to draw fangs.
