How To Create Your Own Super Incredibles 2 Character #Incredibles2Event

April 16, 2018 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Disney provided hotel and transportation for us to attend the Incredibles 2 Animation Day. While we were at the Incredibles 2 Animation Day we had the opportunity to learn about how easy it is to create your own “Super”.

Incredibles 2

But first we had to learn a little about the different shapes that occur in art and what they mean. Take for example a very large boxy type character. This is the shape of Mr. Incredible, who is super strong right? That is a shape that we recognize, we see security people are usually that shape.

Incredibles 2

Then you can also think of long and slender boxes or long slender triangles show us speed and agility and are often feminine. Then you have the circle shape and it can represent unity or the circle of life. And then the combination just gives us a feeling, along with the colors you choose and how you put them together.

Incredibles 2

How To Create A Super

While we were at Pixar we were encouraged to do three different things.

One. We were encouraged to just cut out some basic shapes.

Two. We were encouraged to use two basic colors and could accent with a few more.

Three. We were encouraged to just take those scissors and just cut.

He encouraged us to just be free and go with the flow. He said there was something therapeutic about taking the scissors and cutting. Kind of like an animator with a pencil, just go for it.

Incredibles 2

I wasn’t very good at just free cutting, so I cut out some shapes in two different colors of blue and put them together. My figure, even though I didn’t mean for it to, ended up looking a lot like Frozone.

Incredibles 2

Here are a few of the characters that some of my blogging buddies came up with. What do you think? Could you put together a great Super with just a few basic shapes? This would be a fun project to do with your kids. Just get some construction paper or pattern paper. Just get some different kinds of paper. Get some scissors and some glue. Then put it all together and see what you can come up with. Incredibles 2Incredibles 2Incredibles 2Incredibles 2

That’s why we wanted to share this really cute Alien Pencil Topper craft. How To Make an Alien Pencil Topper Craft

Most of the kids nowadays are bored of the plain old pencils, much like my daughter. Since Valentine’s day is coming up, this might be something your class wants to do together, or that your kids could make as an alternative to the sugar gifts.

Step 1:  Gather all the materials needed for this tutorial:

alien topper photo 12Step 12: Finally done! You can now use your alien pompom pencil topper in your favorite pencil!

DIY: How to Make Valentines & Envelopes with Scotch Duct Tape Craft

January 16, 2018 by Momstart Leave a Comment

My kids and I had an opportunity to do Duct Tape crafts and we found that it’s quite fun to make your own products out of Duct Tape is it Duck Tape or Duct tape. I think it’s Duck Brand Duct tape but most people just call it Duck tape now. We ended up making a little hand bag, ties, and head bands. It was so much fun. You can use Duck Tape to make purses, ties for Father’s day and you could probably make a shirt if you took the time. I’m not sure how comfortable it would be but the ideas with Duck Tape crafts is endless. Since it’s almost Valentine’s Day, we thought we should share some Duct Tape Valentines, AKA Duck Tape Valentines.

Duck Tape Valentines

Duck Tape Valentines

So this can be entirely made with Duct Tape. Or you can gather some card stock and just enhance it with the tape.

Supplies needed:

Multiple Color Duct Tape

(Patterned Duck Tape)
Sharpies

To Make the Cards:

Lay one piece of duct tape flat on the board. Now layer a second one so that it overlaps with the first one between a quarter and an eighth of an inch. Continue until you’ve reached a size that works for you. We did about four rows of duct tape.

Then when you have a solid sheet you can just decorate it as you choose with angles and shapes cut out of Duct Tape.

When you want place a solid color in the middle where you can write a message or a name to personalize the Valentine.

To Make The Envelopes:

How to Make Duck Tape Valentines Using Duct Tape

Lay one piece of duct tape flat on the board. Now layer a second one so that it overlaps with the first one between a quarter and an eighth of an inch. Continue until you’ve reached a size that works for you. We did about six rows of duct tape.

How to Make Duck Tape Valentines Using Duct Tape

Turn the sheet over. Use a couple rolls of tape to hold down the corner if needed. Time for the second layer, or envelope liner. Do the same exact thing but going in an opposite direction. This will ensure that your duct tape sheet doesn’t roll into a tube. Once you’re done, trim the excess tape off the edges.

Measure the size you need based on your card or whatever is going in inside. For our first envelope, we used one of our pop-up name cards. Cut the sheet so that it’s about half an inch wider than the card and about three times the height.

From the bottom, measure and draw out a triangle. Cut it out. Mimic a similar triangle for the top flap, but slightly larger. Now you’re done!

How To Make a Paper Plate Dinosaur

December 29, 2017 by Momstart Leave a Comment

If your kids are dinosaur-obsessed, turn your home into Jurassic Park with this quick and easy craft!

By Allison McGuire.

Allison McGuire has an accomplished history of building online marketing and ecommerce programs. As the Director of Marketing at Paper Mart, she has launched a variety of new marketing channels which have propelled the 96-year old business to the next level. Oh, the things you can do with a paper plate! This dinosaur craft is quick, easy, and will lead to hours of fun and imaginative play. Even better, this project offers the opportunity for a learning moment: teach kids about the different species of dinosaurs they’ve made, what they ate, and where they roamed.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you step-by-step how to make a paper plate dinosaur using a plate, a few crafty embellishments, and a lot of creativity.

What You’ll Need:

● Large paper plate

● Scissors

● Pencil

● Glue

● Toilet paper roll

● Decorations of your choosing (try paint, ribbons, washi tape, and googly eyes!)

Step 1:

Fold a large paper plate in half to form the body of your dinosaur.

Step 2:

On a second paper plate or sturdy card stock, sketch out a head, tail and triangular spikes (depending on which dinosaur you’re making). If you aren’t confident in your drawing skills, download a template from the web to get the features just right.

Step 3:

Glue or staple the head, tail, and spikes to the edges of the first plate and secure between both sides of the plate.

Step 4:

For the dinosaur’s feet, measure and cut a toilet roll into three even pieces. Then cut slits into two of the pieces and slide them onto the paper plate dinosaur. If you downloaded a template, it probably had feet included — but affixing toilet roll feet will allow your dinosaur to stand on its own, making it more fun for your child to play with.

Step 5:

Time to decorate! Depending on the age and ability of your child, you can paint the dinosaur or even add glitter and sparkles. Solid color or patterned washi tape is an easy way for kids to add their own flair when decorating, since the thin tape is easy for little fingers to tear. Cut ribbon into smaller pieces to make fun, colorful spikes for a stegosaurus, or use metallic trim to outfit your dinosaur with sparkly scales. Add googly eyes to your dinosaur’s head, and you’re done!

Don’t stop at one dinosaur — make a whole dino family, from T-Rex to pterodactyls and stegosauruses! Let your kids make up stories for the dinosaurs to act out. And don’t forget to give your paper plate dinosaur a n

10 Craft Ideas for a Kid-Friendly New Year’s Eve Party

December 22, 2017 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Ring in the New Year with these festive crafts, which will entertain kids and adults alike. By Allison McGuire.

Hosting a New Year’s Eve event that includes the whole family? Keep the youngsters occupied until midnight with a fun craft project, while the adults ring in 2018 in style.

Raise a toast to these 10 fun, kid-friendly New Year’s crafts — and let the countdown begin!

1. Wishing Wands

Help your kids make their wishes for the year to come with these wishing wands! Cut two star-shaped frames from cardstock and glue a layer of clear cellophane to the inside of each. Place some fun embellishments like glitter, sequins, ribbon, or wrapping paper in the center of one of the cellophane stars. Then, glue the edges to the other star frame to make a pocket. Add a dowel (or paper towel roll) and some ribbon streamers, and your little fairies can grant wishes to their heart’s content.

2. Toilet Roll Confetti Poppers

No New Year’s Eve is complete without confetti, and these toilet roll confetti poppers are super easy to make. Glue a thin layer of tissue paper around the tube to cover one end. Then use a sewing needle to thread nylon fishing line through the tissue paper, tying a knot on the tube side of the paper to hold the line in place. Fill the tube with confetti, then affix a layer of tissue paper to the other end to close off the tube. Decorate with colorful washi tape, and get ready to pull the string at midnight!

3. Plastic Straw Noise Makers

What’s more fun than a noisemaker? For this craft, take a standard plastic straw in a bright color and cut it into a spiral about halfway up. Flatten the other end with your fingers, and trim the slanted corners. Play around with different blowing techniques to get the sound you’re looking for. Pro tip: try squeezing the straw tightly between your lips for a louder sound.

4. Jingle Bell Shakers

These noisemakers might just be the easiest New Year’s Eve craft of the night. Simply paint popsicle sticks or tongue depressors silver and gold, glue two or three jingle bells onto each stick, then tie on some curling ribbon to finish off the craft.

5. Wishing Tree

To help your little ones look forward to the New Year, gather several small branches or twigs to put in a festive vase as your “tree,” then cut out stars from cardstock or construction paper. Write “I wish…” on one side of the star, then have your child write their wish on the other side. Decorate the stars with glitter, punch a hole in the top, and weave in sparkly gold trim for hanging.

6. Silver and Gold Slime

What kid doesn’t love playing with slime? For this squishy New Year’s craft, pour one five-ounce bottle of glue into a bowl. Next, fill the empty bottle with water, shake, and add to the glue. Add two tablespoons of silver or gold liquid watercolor and mix well (for added sparkle, you can mix in silver or gold glitter). Gradually mix in eight tablespoons of liquid starch, mixing as you go. When the mixture is thick enough to knead, work it with your hands until it’s completely mixed, and your slime is ready!

7. New Year’s Glasses

See into the future with your very own New Year’s glasses! Using either craft foam or cardstock, cut out the frames. Punch two small holes on either side, and weave in pipe cleaners for the ear pieces (measure to fit your child’s head). Cut out the numbers for 2018, and let your kids decorate both the numbers and the frames with markers or washi tape. Then, glue the numbers onto the frames along with any confetti or charms for extra sparkle.

8. Fireworks Sparkler

This kid-friendly New Year’s craft provides a safer alternative to the standard sparkler. Sandwich a sheet of tin foil between two colored sheets of cellophane and fold in half. At the open end, cut strips towards the fold, making sure to stop halfway down so that you don’t cut the sheets in two. Wrap the folded end tightly around a large drinking straw, securing with tape. Gently open the strips so that they are fanned out like a firework!

9. Paper Ring Chain

This paper ring chain is a fun way to pass the hours until midnight. Cut strips of construction paper and, on each strip, write down an activity to keep the kids entertained during that time. A few examples: bake cookies, play charades, or have a dance party! Link the rings together and hang with a sparkly jewel weave ribbon. As you count down the hours to midnight, remove one ring and do the activity listed on it. You’ll be ringing in the New Year before you know it!

10. Time Capsule

Recap 2017 with this memorable time capsule activity. Have the kids write down their favorite things (color, food, toy, etc.), the best thing that happened to them in the past year, and their wishes for the new year. Tuck the answers into a metal tin that they can decorate with ribbons in their favorite color. Write the year onto the tin with a permanent marker and pack it away in a special place to be opened the following year.

A Minion Puff Ornament Craft #AD #DespicableMe3 #DM3family

December 8, 2017 by Momstart Leave a Comment

This post is sponsored by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Our family is big fans of Despicable Me 3. We love all the character, Gru, his wife Lucy, their three adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions and how they provide hours of family fun in this heartwarming comedy. In our partnership with this #1 animated comedy of the year, we decided to make a Minion Puff Ornament that is really quick and easy to make and poses as a lovely addition to your Christmas Tree.

A Minion Puff Ornament

My daughter and I were talking about some of her favorite crafts and one of them is making puffs, or rather fluffy yarn balls. Zoe learned how to make these at an event we went to and she decided to turn one into a Minion for me. So to make these Minion Puff Ornaments you need some yellow and black yarn.

A Minion Puff Ornament Craft

Materials:

Yellow Yarn
Black Yarn

Googly Eyes

Craft Glue

Scissors

Take the yarn and wrap it around something, usually you can just wrap it around your fingers but Zoe got a piece of cardboard and wrapped the yellow yarn around the piece of cardboard.

image

Then you have to tie a not around the middle.

yellow yarn craft

Then you cut the wrapped yarn at each end and remove the board. Zoe then wrapped a piece of black yarn around the puff and glued on an eye or two.

A Minion Puff Ornament

She also decided to make overalls for one of the Minions. I think he turned out quite cute.

Now you can bring home all the fun of Despicable Me 3 home this holiday season.

About Despicable Me 3

Illumination, the studio that brought you Sing, The Secret Life of Pets and the Despicable Me franchise, continues the adventures of Gru and his family in Despicable Me 3. After he is fired from the Anti-Villain League for failing to take down Balthazar Bratt, the latest evil mastermind to threaten humanity, Gru finds himself in the midst of a major identity crisis. But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother — a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin’s despicable footsteps — the former super-villain rediscovers just how good it feels to be bad.

Animal Crafts for Preschoolers: How to Make Paper Animals

November 14, 2017 by Momstart 1 Comment

Guest Post By Allison McGuire

Family crafting time provides a valuable opportunity to learn (and bond) together. Try one of these four craft ideas based on beloved storybook characters.

image

When you spend time reading or making crafts with your children, you’re doing more than just keeping them busy. You’re engaging their young minds and laying a foundation that will help them improve their motor skills, communicate their feelings, and become independent thinkers. Crafting also provides an opportunity to build memories as you enjoy quality time together.

If you’re looking for crafting ideas, why not take inspiration from a classic children’s book? Here are a few of our favorite paper animal crafts that tie into popular stories and films:

1. Colorful Caterpillars

Try this fun, multi-colored craft after readingThe Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Your child will enjoy recreating the main character in the book as well as learning basic shapes and colors.

  1. Draw eight circles — one in each color of the rainbow and another one in white for the head. Allow your child to cut out the circles with child-friendly scissors.
  2. Help your child glue the circles together, overlapping each end while asking them to name the different colors.
  3. Let the child draw a face on the head and glue it to the caterpillar.
  4. Add pipe cleaner antennae and legs.
  5. Surround your caterpillar with colorful butterflieslike these to show what he’ll become one day!

2. Roaring Lions

This is a perfect project for all those little ones who love Disney’sThe Lion King! Kids will get the chance to practice their fine motor skills, counting, and comparing sizes and colors.

  1. Cut out one large circle for the face and four medium circles — two for the ears and two for the snout — out of light brown construction paper.
  2. Cut out one medium circle for the nose and two small circles for the eyes out of black construction paper.
  3. Trace and cut a medium circle out of white construction paper for the mouth.
  4. Glue the ears to the top of the face.
  5. Glue the nose to the bottom center of the face, then glue the eyes onto the face as well.
  6. Glue the snout circles on top of the nose so that it has a crescent appearance.
  7. Glue the mouth on top of the snout.
  8. Use darker colored puff balls or feather puffs for the mane. Simply glue them around the back of the face, and you’ve got a fun, ferocious lion!

3. Bunny Ears

Bunny ears are an easy and fun craft to tie in with Beatrix Potter’sThe Tale of Peter Rabbit. Try this project around Easter, so your child can don the ears for Easter Egg hunting!

  1. Cut a strip of paper long enough to wrap around your child’s head. You may need to staple a couple of pieces together for a good fit.
  2. Allow your child to decorate the strip with crayons, markers, or fun embellishments likewashi tape.
  3. Cut two large ovals for the ears in white and two smaller ovals in pink for the inner ears.
  4. Glue or tape them all together, and your little one can hop their way into a fun afternoon!

4. Elephant Puppet

Jean De Brunhoff’sBabar series is a classic story that’s withstood the test of time. For a contemporary craft, all you need is a paper lunch sack and some gray construction paper.

  1. Using atemplate, cut out two large floppy ears and a long trunk from gray construction paper.
  2. Glue the ears to the sides of a paper lunch sack.
  3. Glue the trunk to the flap of the sack, which will serve as the elephant’s “mouth.”
  4. Attach a couple of googly eyes, and allow your child to color or decorate the bag as they like.
  5. Show the child how to insert their hand into the bag and make the elephant speak.
  6. Make two or three of these puppets and act out scenes from the Babar books. Or make a whole lunch bag puppet zoo and invite the neighborhood kids over to put on a play!
