Disney provided us hotel and travel to LA so we could attend the Solo: A Star Wars Story premiere and press junket. During the Solo: A Star Wars Story press junket we were able to sit down with Alden Ehrenreich and interview him. A few big questions for Alden Ehrenreich is did he fill Harrison Ford’s shoes and become Han Solo? How did he feel about even trying to take on the character of Han Solo? And How much of his performance was his version of Solo and how much did they honor the original?
So I’ve seen the movie, and the more I think about Solo, the more I love it. I’m going to start off with my honest opinion and say Alden Ehrenreich pulled off Han Solo and told us a story about Han that we didn’t know. Han wasn’t always that guy that carried confidence and swagger but he does now and I loved it. Oh, I also have to share with you, that Harrison Ford also things that Alden Ehrenreich pulled off Han Solo. I feel like, right here is the mic drop moment and you need to just run off and purchase your tickets to see Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters May 25th.
Harrison Ford surprised Alden in the interview right before ours.
Alden was still in shock that Harrison surprised him while we were interviewing him. He also said that Harrison told him he’s going to make tons of money.
He loved it, he thought it was awesome, he thought it worked like gangbusters. He thought I was really great and he said I’m going to make hundreds and hundreds of dollars.
They both met before Alden began shooting. They had lunch and talked about what Harrison did and his path in Hollywood.
What Alden decided to do was to make his version of Han Solo feel like a real person, he wanted us to feel like we were watching a real person go through something. He also said that it was important for the audience to see a continuity of Han growing into “that guy”. He then watched all the movies so he could see where he was supposed to end up and so that he wouldn’t be “thinking a lot about it”.
Was there a quirk that he felt he had to nail that defines Han?
Alden then told us that there were several things. But he didn’t want to name them because he felt like that would be pointing out things that you would be looking for and might take away from the story. He did mention that he really liked the scene from A New Hope where they were on the death star and they didn’t know what to do so Han just starts running and yelling towards the group of Storm Troopers. He felt that was a great quintessential essence of Han.
Alden also talked to us about the pressure he was under to get this right. He said that this is so enormous and he wants people to like it. He said all he could concentrate on is what he has control over and he poured his energy into that.
Han Solo and Chewbacca are like best friends. They are together forever and that relationship had to shine as the story goes on and it does. How did Alden and Joonas work on that relation ship off screen? They both were on set early before most of the cast and they spent a lot of time training together. They prepared for the scene in which they meet which is a fight scene. They also spent some time playing video games like Halo. Alden also said that Joonas just has a big heart and working with him was some of his favorite work in the film.
How will Star Wars fans react to Solo: A Star Wars Story?
Well I think so much of the fun of it, you know, it’s almost like a bio pic of a fictional character. So it’s like you get to watch these things that you know and are familiar with and love come into place and how they all add up to making him the Han that we see later on. You know, and that means so much to people and it’s so fun, and I just think also like the humor of it and the playfulness of the whole thing is so great.
I think Solo: A Star Wars Story is going to get mixed reviews. I think it depends on what they expected and if they can realize that this is like a coming of age story. This is an off-shoot. This is a creation story, a beginning story. It’s a great story. Solo: A Star Wars story isn’t anything like I expected, it was better than I expected. Alden Ehrenreich made Han Solo his own and he completely succeeded. Go See Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters Memorial Day weekend.
