My children go back to school on Wednesday of next week and as a mother of a Kindergartner for the first time I’m really not sure how to handle it. I’m excited for her and nervous for her at the same time. It was just last night that my son realized he’s not going to the same school as his sister and he freaked out. I should have realized when he was so excited for his sister. They had plenty of fun though playing with all the kids when we had the open house night for her Kindergarten class, and that’s the event that made if real to me. While we were there, Zoe had to sort all of her school supplies one of them being PURELL® Hand Sanitizer. Every student was required to bring a bottle of hand sanitizer to school as part of the supplies and I can only imagine why. 20 students in her class means lots of germy hands touching everything, and that gets me thinking of how we’re fighting colds more during the school year than we are during the summer. So I wanted to come up with a list of ways to fight the germs while still letting your kids play hard getting dirty this school year and I’d love to have your opinion on the matter.
Knowing that I have two different schools to contend with this year, I feel like I’m going to have twice as many germs because when Zoe gets sick, Miles gets sick and vice versa. Miles also loves to touch everything and Zoe still puts things in her mouth so all I can ask is that they wash their hands at every turn and use hand sanitizer whenever they can’t wash their hands. My little man Miles plays in the dirt with trucks, shovels and just his bare hands. He comes home from playing outside looking like he rolled in the dirt. It drives me crazy but he’s having fun so its very hard to tell him to stop.
I make sure the kids have lots of vitamin C and eat really healthy food. They get a daily vitamin and fortified juice or milk. I also believe in a good night’s sleep, daily exercise, fresh air and make sure the kids drink lots of water. We like to get a little bit of sugar free flavoring to put in the water so the kids just down it like it’s candy and it doesn’t even add any calories. So I recommend at least a daily vitamin, lots of water, a little juice and healthy habits including nutritious food and daily exercise.
It’s inevitable that the children are going back to school and that they are surrounded by germs. You just have to let them go and let them have fun and take care of germy situation as you can. Send them off strong, well rested, well fed and ready to fight the germs. Hopefully your school is like ours and has plenty of hand sanitizer on hand to keep those germs at bay.
