Love With Food – Fighting Childhood Hunger

September 19, 2014 by momicles Leave a Comment

Box subscriptions are pretty popular these days, and it’s easy to see why. Pay a reasonable fee for someone to box up an assortment of things and deliver them to your door. Pretty cool! Love with Food really stands out to me though as being a step above the rest. If you haven’t heard of Love with Food yet, our friends there sent me a sample box to review so that I could tell you all about them. Love With Food Box

First, the basics. Love with Food is a natural and organic snack sample box subscription. You sign up to receive a box once a month. They offer tasing boxes for as little as $10 a month and even have a gluten free box option for $25 a month. Each month, this packed box shows up at your door holding tasty, GMO-free, all-natural, sometimes organic snakcks free of articficial stuff. Each box has a little bit of a seasonal theme. For Sepetmber I received a “state fair” themed box.

So what comes in a Love with Food box? This is what came in my first box:

  • Montreal Steak Spice Seasoning Potato Chips by Covered Bridge (@CBChips)
  • Pineapple + Coconut Fruit Ice by Smooze (@SmoozeFruitIce)
  • Cinammon Grahams by Skeeter Nut Free (@SkeeterNutFree)
  • Salty Peanut Salt Water Taffy by Salty Road (@saltyroad)
  • Salty Caramel Apple Salet Water Taffy by Salty Road (@saltyroad)
  • Lollipops by YumEarth (@YumEarth)
  • Crispy Cheddar Crackers  by Back to Nature
  • Kettle Sweet Peanuts by Love with Food (@LoveWithFood)
  • Nutty Rice Bites with Blueberries by 180 Snacks (@180Snacks)

IMG_3094

I’m a mom and while I do not stick to a completely all natural diet, I do a lot. I try to keep our stuff natural and on-the-go snacks are sometimes a little tricky with two small kids. Not only do I get to have snacks on hand from Love with Food, but they introduce me to some amazing products that I can then add into our normal shopping.

Now for what makes Love with Food even better than the average subscription service. For every box purchased, Love with Food will donate a meal to a child in need. They do this by donating to food banks like the Feeding America Network and Share Our Strength – No Kid Hungry. MomStart has always been a huge helper when it comes to giving, as am I personally. Especially since this is Hunger Action Month, trying out Love with Food is a great plan since you’ll also be helping to fight childhood hunger.

Graco 4Ever VS Graco Milestone – Video Comparison

August 25, 2014 by momicles Leave a Comment

If you get in a car with your child, you have to have a car seat. Which one do you buy? Is it worth the money? Is there really a seat that can transition from babyhood to big kid? What do you get when you spend the extra money? Our friends at Graco sent me 2 car seats to do a side by side comparison for you. You can watch my video comparison/review here.

I was actually in the car seat market myself and trying to decide between the Graco Milestone and the newly released Graco 4Ever. These two seats are extremely similar. This is Graco, so you can rest assured that both seats have undergone strenuous testing for both safety and durability. Especially living in the South, I was happy to see both seats are approved for extreme car interior temperatures. They are both side impact tested, and one of my favorite perks is that neither seat is ginormous. I don’t know if you could fit three of these across in a a car, but they are more narrow than some of the competitor seats. Here are some more features BOTH the Graco 4Ever and the Graco Milestone have:

  • Rear Facing 5 Point Harness
  • Simply Safe Adjust Harness Systmem (One hand, no rethread, height adjustment)
  • InRight LATCH System (one second attachment)
  • Washable Covers
  • Recline Indicator Labels
  • Harness Storage (for when using as booster)

Graco Milestone

Graco Milestone Seat Graco Milestone Car Seat

After seeing all of these features, you can tell why I honestly can recommend either of the seats to anyone. You will have a happy, secure child with either seat. I especially love the easy to remove and wash covers and the no rethread height adjustment. Now for the differences. At a MSRP of $229.99, the Graco Milestone is approved for use in children 5 lbs-100 lbs. It works as a rear-facing 5 point harness for infants 5 – 40 lbs, a forward facing 5 point harness for children 20-65 lbs, and a belt positioning booster for children 30 – 100 lbs. There is one detachable cupholder and a red line indicator to help you with the level of the seat during installation.

Graco 4ever Seat

Graco 4Ever Car Seat

Graco 4Ever

At a MSRP of $299.99, the Graco 4Ever car seat is more expensive, but does offer more product. The 4Ever seat is actually approved for use for children 4 lbs – 120 lbs. The 4Ever actually transitions one additional time as compared to the Milestone. The back of the seat actually comes off transforming the car seat into a backless belt postioning booster. That is in addition to the other seat set ups also offered by the Milestone. The 4Ever car seat has 6 levels of recline. It also has an air bubble level indicator which I find to be much more helpful during the installation process. There are also 2 cupholders on the 4Ever as opposed to the one on the Milestone. In our family, it seems like you need two – one for drinks and one for toys!

I truly do not think you can go wrong purchasing either seat. I personally like the 4Ever a little better. I like the added cupholder and transition into the backless booster. Graco’s intent was to create a car seat that could last for 10 years, and I really think they’ve done it. Not only is the seat designed to transition through the 10 years of stages that your child will go through, but the 4ever car seats do not expire until 10 years after their manufacture date. For more information, feel free to visit Graco online.

WAHL Lithium Ion Trimmer – Perfect

June 18, 2014 by momicles Leave a Comment

Wahl is one of the leaders in men’s grooming supplies and have a great line of products for men. They sent me a Lithium Ion trimmer to try and some great information on fathers and sons to share with all of you.

Since Father’s Day was this past weekend, it’s the perfect time to think about what really brings dads together with their kids. In our family, we have two boys. It’s funny how at only 4 years old, my oldest son has already asked his “Pop” (that’s what we call the dad in our house) all about shaving. I had never really thought about what a traditional rite of passage grooming seems to be for boys. Wahl, a leader in the men’s grooming category actually conducted a study about boys first learning to groom. Did you know that 8 in 10 boys recall learning to groom from their father as a meaningful experience and plan to carry it on? This is definitely one tradition that is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Wahl trimmer

My husband agreed to try out the Lithium Ion Trimmer to see how well it worked from a dad’s point of view. We both noticed the sleek look of the trimmer. It also has smart charge capabilities. That means, once plugged in, the Wahl Lithium Trimmer charges in just one hour and then shuts down to protect the battery from overcharging. Once you are using it, you get a four hour run time which is a lot longer than most other trimmers on the market.I personally loved how the trimmer came with its own little carrying case and how the attachments changed out pretty easily.

Here is a before and after shot of a neck touch up using the Wahl Lithium Ion Trimmer.

IMG_2224IMG_2233

The biggest thing to remember is that this is a trimmer, not a razor. It is perfect for small detailing, touch ups in between haircuts, and to even out sideburns. For regular shaving and other grooming needs check out Wahl’s website for other products.

Here are the product specs from Wahl:

  • Rechargeable
  • Detail Shaver Head
  • T-Blade Head
  • Rotary Head
  • Detail Head
  • Storage / Travel Pouch
  • 5 Year Limited Warranty
  • MSRP $69.99

Tomato Basil Quinoa Salad Recipe (With Bob’s Red Mill Tri-Color Quinoa)

April 25, 2014 by momicles 6 Comments

BObs QuinoaI love how Bob’s Red Mill is one of those companies you can count on for quality. I can’t say that my family eats 100% clean all of the time, but I like to do what I can when I can. The ease of finding their products makes that goal a little more attainable. Bob’s Red Mill sent me a package of their new tri color quinoa to cook with for this post. I made a delicious summery tasting salad with tomatoes, basil, and a few other touches. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be my new warm weather staple.

I know we see quinoa more and more these days, but that doesn’t mean we know what it is. Yet another reason I am a huge fan of Bob’s Red Mill is their information. Not only do they make great products, they take the time to make sure people know what it is. They held a great Hangout on Google+ all about quinoa. If you’re curious and want to know more about this grain, definitely check it out. Quinoa is often referred to as a whole grain but is actually a gluten free seed. It is a great source of dietary fiber and protein. It’s no wonder quinoa has gone mainstream!

Order Ice Cream Cakes Online with @BaskinRobbins

April 24, 2014 by momicles 2 Comments

Since Baskin Robbins is one of the legendary makers of ice cream, it’s no surprise that their ice cream cakes are delicious. Now you can even order one of their personalized, ice creamy goodness cakes online. I received a gift card to test out Baskin Robbins new online ordering system and I am so glad that I did. No hassle, super easy, and everything was correct.

brbr3

I can honestly say that ice cream cakes are perfect for just about any occasion: birthdays, baby showers, spring flings, cookouts, you name it! With sixteen different ice cream flavors to choose from and 2 cake flavors (chocolate, vanilla), you can customize your Baskin Robbins ice cream cake and make it whatever you want it to be. That’s just the inside! You can also choose from many different cake shapes and designs: baseball, ladybug, purse, football, traditional circle, and rectangle. There are so many options! Take a peek at Baskin Robbins online to see the gallery of cakes ready for online ordering.

BR Cake BR Cake inside

You might worry the system would be slow or confusing. It’s actually super simple and I had no problems placing my order online when I wasn’t even in the country! My favorite part of the system is that you don’t have to create an online account with Baskin Robbins. You have the option to order as a guest which saves you the time and hassle of entering all of your information.

Cakes can be ready as soon as 24 hours after the order is placed. After making all of the choices about your ice cream cake, you are able to choose the date and time that you will pick up the cake. Then you are all set! I ordered a “Batter Up” ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins 3 days before I needed it. When I had prepaid online, so when I walked in with my confirmation email to pick up the cake, everything was… well… a piece of cake. They handed me my ice cream cake and I headed out the door.

BR Cake Ax

Being able to order an ice cream cake from anywhere, paying ahead of time, and an easy breezy pick up makes this something I will definitely be doing again. Hmmm, maybe with Mother’s Day just around the corner I’ll order myself a Happy Mother’s Day ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins. =)

Disclosure : A gift card was provided to test the online ordering system. All opinions are my own.

First 12 Chapters of NOT YET RELEASED “Dorothy Must Die” FREE – New Twisted Tale From Oz

March 29, 2014 by momicles Leave a Comment

I’ve been trying to make a little more time for myself lately and I’ve been trying to do a little pleasure reading. That sounds so easy, but we all know in practice… it takes some work! When I heard about this new tale from Oz, I was pretty curious. Then I found out I could preview it and share it with all of the MomStart readers and I knew I couldn’t say no.

Dorothy Must Die is a new book by Danielle Paige available for purchase on April 1. By the time I had read the first few chapters, I was hooked. You will see the magical land of Oz flipped upside down. You will be immediately connected to Amy, the “new girl from Kansas”, as she tries to sort out the differences between wicked and good. You will start reading, and want to keep turning the page just to see what happens next.

dorothy preview

From the Back Cover

I didn’t ask for any of this.
I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero.

But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?

Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little bluebirds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still a yellow brick road—but even that’s crumbling.

What happened? Dorothy.

They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.

My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas.

I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.

I’ve been trained to fight.

And I have a mission.

The publishers have actually released the first 12 chapters for you to preview! Follow the link to get the first 12 chapters of Dorothy Must Die so that you can get a sneak peek of a highly anticipated literary debut!

Fort Magic: Family Fun ALL Year Long – Review and #Giveaway

March 23, 2014 by momicles 42 Comments

Fort Magic: Family Fun ALL Year Long – Review and #Giveaway

Whether it’s during cold winter days, or rainy spring days, Fort Magic helps us stay busy and have fun. I’m so excited that they provided me with a kit to facilitate this new review!  A couple of years ago, I did my first review of Fort Magic and since Atticus was a pretty little guy, I think it was more fun for me than it was for him! Now I pull out our Fort Magic kit and we both have a great time building something amazing.

DSC00399_thumb.jpg Fort magic ax

You might be wondering what Fort Magic actually is. It’s an innovative fort building and construction toy that enables children to build 3D, kid-created, “life-size” worlds for play. Even my husband, and the dog, can fit into the tent we built! Children (whether they are 5 or 45) can build “forts” shaped like pirate ships, castles, playhouses, submarines, airplanes, teepees, tunnels, and so much more. The kit comes with plastic sticks (think plastic hollow dowel rods) and connectors that can be assembled in a ton of different ways. The kit does not include fabric covers, but I think our sheets and thin blankets work perfectly!

Every Fort Magic kit includes 382 Pieces:

  • 165 Straight and Curved Sticks in seven different sizes!
  • 87 Connector pieces in five varieties of shapes and sizes!
  • 130 easy to use fabric and accessory Clips! Securely fasten sheets or fabric to ANY shape design your child invents!
  • A full color Instruction Manual with over 20 designs to build!
  • A high quality Storage Bag that securely holds all of the Fort Magic pieces – so clean up is quick and easy every time!
  • A 30-day Money Back Guarantee!
  • Fabric Covers Are Not Included.

Fort Magic Playhouse Final (2)  Fort Magic Mini-Ship Final (2)

Fort Magic Tunnel & Fort Frame (2) 2013_Manual_JPEGs_2013_Manual_JPEGs

My son even has fun just building random “machines” that do different jobs. Following the plans and creating structures is still a little tough for him to do all by himself (at 3 years old) but it really makes for some awesome quality together time for us. He even took his naps in our latest tent creation for about a week! For some great ideas on what you can build, I love checking out the Fort Magic YouTube channel.

If you’re interested in purchasing a Fort Magic Kit, they are available online. You should definitely check out some of the other Fort Magic reviews to see how much fun other families are having too!

Now for the best part! Our friends at Fort Magic are supplying a complete Fort Magic Kit to giveaway to one of our readers. To enter, please follow the directions in the Rafflecopter below.

Chicken Cacciatore Recipe from @eMeals –An Easy, Healthy Dinner Dish

March 20, 2014 by momicles 3 Comments

Chicken Cacciatore Recipe from @emeals –An Easy, Healthy Dinner Dish

By: Ashley

I think chicken is one of those things that is awesome for dinner… but I always run out of things to do with it. Thanks to eMeals, my chicken recipe arsenal is always well stocked. The best part is that even when I’ve been trying to eat healthy, I can still find great recipes with my emeals subscription, which is provided for me since I’m part of the eMeals Blogger Network.

Let me first admit that this isn’t exactly the super traditional Italian dish. First of all, it’s served over rice. It’s also missing some of the extra veggies that a lot of Italian recipes call for. I still absolutely LOVE it though and will make it again for my family. So without further ado, here is the chicken recipe.

Chicken Cacciatore Over Rice

Chicken Cacciatore Over Rice Recipe

You will need:

1 c. uncooked brown rice

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon pepper

1 T olive oil

2 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cubed

8 oz sliced mushrooms

14 oz can stewed tomatoes (I actually made this with diced tomatoes instead and added a little extra)

¼ teaspoon dried oregano

1 T minced fresh garlic

  1. Cook rice according to package directions to yield 3 c. cooked rice.
  2. Salt and pepper chicken and cook in olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, covered for 4 to 6 minutes.
  3. Remove chicken and set aside.
  4. Add mushrooms to hot skillet and sauté until tender.
  5. Reduce heat to low and add remaining ingredients except rice then simmer 10 minutes.
  6. Return chicken to skillet and cook 5 minutes more or until done and heated throughout.
  7. Divide into 6 servings; serve each over ½ c brown rice.

Check out eMeals for more delicious and healthy recipes. I love having my weekly meal plan pop into my email once a week!

How to Keep Sick Kids Entertained: Ideas From Children’s Advil

How to Keep Sick Kids Entertained: Ideas From Children’s Advil

By: Ashley

Having sick kids is just a part of being a parent, but this cold and flu season has been a challenge! With my oldest going to preschool this year and having an infant at home, germs are snotted, drooled, and smeared all over the place and there’s only so much I can do about it. We wash hands, try to wipe down toys, and eat healthy (most of the time ;)). But sometimes sick still happens. It happened so much that I had said we were in the month(s) “Sick-u-ary”. So what do you do when your kids are sick? Step into Dr. Mom mode, of course. I received a great kit, some product samples, and some helpful information from Children’s Advil (by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare) to help work through those snotty, germy, days.

Childrens Advil

What do you do when your kids are sick? If your kids are anything like mine, when they are sick they are whiney and pitiful. My littlest one wants to be held most of the time and my oldest usually walks that fine line between super bored and completely exhausted. Thankfully, Children’s Advil has great products to keep fevers down, and some great ideas to help keep sick kids entertained (not an easy task). You need to check out the Children’s Advil® Feel Better Activity Center . As part of the Children’s Advil Facebook Page, they have created a fun filled list of activities for you to do with your little sickies. There are games to play (like building a fort ), ways to “get crafty” (like the homemade clay recipe), and “fun food” ideas (like this banana boat recipe). I know that Children’s Advil created this list of activities with sick kids in mind, but there are a lot of wonderful ideas that I will be trying out when my kids are feeling good too! We already used the pretend doctor’s kit they sent me to pretend, another one of their ideas.

Play doctor

I usually turn to ibuprofen, the medicine in Children’s Advil when my 3 year old has a fever. In my opinion, it seems to work the most quickly and last the longest as compared to other fever reducers. It’s also helpful that he doesn’t call it “the yucky kind.” Here are some more facts from Children’s Advil about their products:

– Children’s Advil® contains ibuprofen, the medicine pediatricians use most for their own kids’ fever.*

– Provides up to 8-hours of relief

– Infants’ Advil is available for infants ages 6 to 23 months, Children’s Advil is intended for use in children ages 2 to 11 years. Jr. Strength Advil is intended for use in children 6 to 11 years.
Children’s Advil® is available in great tasting Bubble Gum, Grape, Blue Raspberry, Fruit and Dye-Free White Grape flavors. It is also available in convenient Grape Chewables and an easy-to-swallow small tablet. Infants’ Advil Drops® are available in dye-free white grape.

– It is important to remember to always read and keep the cartons for complete warnings and dosing information on Children’s Advil® products.
o Refer to and only use the dosing device and information that comes packaged with the medicine.
o If known, dose child based on weight, as this is the most appropriate method. If weight is not known, use age. Administer the appropriate dose preferably based on the weight of the child.
o Adult strength medicines should not be administered to children.

– When used as directed parents can feel confident knowing that Children’s Advil® is both safe and effective.

*Based on reducing fever below 100°F.

Be sure to visit Facebook.com/ChildrensAdvil to visit the online Feel Better Activity Center which offers activities to make a sick day a better day.
