Apples To Apples Xbox LIVE Arcade

By Summer:

One of my favorite board games is Mattel’s Apples to Apples. We’ve been playing it at parties with friends now for … gosh … 8 years I think, since we’ve been married. We would have a game night all the time with our friends, but as we got older and had babies (and kids) the adult game time died. My husband and I game on out Xbox, and we dig playing on LIVE. And now we can have the best of our former years and now! Apples to Apples has come to Xbox LIVE!

Apples Art

Never played Apples to Apples? You’re in for a treat!!! This is a game of quick thinking:

In the board game there is a judge who lays down an adjective green card all players to match with a noun red card from their hands. The slowest play is penalized by not being about to lay down a card. You can play to the judge’s interests of you know the players well enough. The judge picks their favorite card of those provided and they player earns a point. The judge job rotates and game play continues until someone has collected six points.Apples Logo

The single player arcade game is a battle of wits as you “guess” what the computer would pick. The apple judges have a personality (i.e. – astronaut or princess or pirate) and you have to play to the judges personality. The apple judge will lay down an adjective and for the first several rounds they help you figure it out by providing the words. You have to type in the CAPPED word to earn guessing time; incorrect words take time away. In the later rounds you have to figure out the missing word and then type it in. My husband and I spend about an hour playing together to beat the computer. It was a fun way to play on the “same team”.

Apple Screen 4

Local multiplayer is VERY interesting. It took my husband and me a bit of time to figure this game out. At first it seemed so simple, one judge plus two to three other players – basic. As a player, however, you can submit your card in secret. Of course as you look at them all player can read your cards, but you can select using “Play In Secret”, “Play Next”, or “Play Previous” in addition to simply selecting your card. However what through us was the play next and previous as the buttons are crisscrossed from cards.

Multiplayer LIVE arcade is a fun challenge as you might not know the players in your game. You can have a “party” and pick your game guests, or play with others just wanting to game online. . I did both (NOTE: you need at least 3 players to play a round – 1 judge and 2 players per round; 6 players is the maximum for any game) and found it all around entertaining. It was real people so made the emotion invest of the game more of a challenge for me; or in other words, I hate losing, so it was a fun challenge to try and beat other competitors. To play Apples to Apples on Xbox LIVE arcade you must have Gold LIVE membership

One thing I did notice when I first started, if you play more than a couple of games you’ve see many of the cards; then it just becomes a rotation. But each game is different since every time you play red cards are assigned at random and who knows when you’ll see the same green card – maybe in the following game or maybe 6 more games in. But the best thing about online is they (the game gods) can add more and current card as desired unlike a board game where you’d have to purchase an extension package.

Apples to Apples is totally fun! I recommend having a family game time on arcade with Apples to Apples.

Based on Nickelodeon’s hit live action comedy series Victorious, the games allow players to dive into the world of Hollywood Arts High School where they can star in their very own music video or in a big showcase along with Tori Vega and her wild, crazy, artsy friends! Chaos is coming to Tori Vega’s life. The 16 year old is starting at a new high school; but not just any school. This is Hollywood Arts, a performing arts school where crazy talented students learn how to become real artists.. Now, that’s all about to change… if Tori can see herself in a new light, even a spotlight! But Hollywood Arts is still a high school, and Tori is still the new kid. She’ll have to find new friends, do homework, and just try to fit in. Will Tori grab a starring role in her new life?

Twister Mania Kinect Xbox 360

Growing up I always loved playing Twister. It’s such a fun party game to play with lots of friends and I loved the challenge. Thinking about playing this as a family on the Xbox 360 Kinect left me wondering how is that going to work when we merge into one solid shape as we get all twisted up. That’s where the mania came in turning Twister Mania for the Kinect into a smash hit in our house. The interface of the game gets an A+ because it was so easy for our family to use. This game works quite well for little ones and is an easy to play Kinect game.

image

This interactive digital Twister® experience allows up to eight players to twist into the action with 16 fun, unique ways to play in a TWISTER- inspired environment filled with iconic, colorful flair. We had the most fun playing as teams, we did two teams of two and it worked out fabulously. Most kinect games with the kids drive me crazy because it’s so hard to tell a 3 and 4 year old how to make the kinect work, but for Twister Mania it just worked and it was fun. I really enjoyed playing it.

IMG_5953IMG_5955

To Play Twister Mania you use your body as the game piece. It challenges you to twist yourself in thousands of different ways and the quicker the better.

We chose from 3 main game modes:

Party Play: Twirl the virtual spinner and advance around the Twister® mat with up to four teams of two in Party Play, a metagame that combines all game challenges. Party play was the easiest mode for us as a family. the kids could understand that when the color wheel came up with their color it was their teams turn. So we all jumped in and out of the living room and laughed as everyone tried to do the different objectives in party play.

IMG_5964
Play It All: Try your hand at every game challenge from start to finish in this campaign mode for the overachievers. I think my husband spent hours doing this game mode the other night while I was out having a moms night out. It was so funny to come in and see him making more poses, but I wasn’t just laughing at him, I was happy to see him enjoying a game. We haven’t enjoyed a Kinect game like this since it first came out.
Quick Play: Jump right in and directly select any of the 16 ways to play and difficulty level for a quick challenge. Is a great way to just get started.

Now within each of the different game modes there are certain activities within each. Here is just a sampling of what you’ll find.  (a total of 16 ways to play)

Shape Frenzy: Mimic the shape (there are over 1800!) that appears on screen and earn points based on how well you fill its silhouette.
Twist & Fit: Avoid the wall and fit your silhouette through cutouts coming at you on a moving wall. Score points by passing through a wall without touching a thing; the more wall you hit the lower your score.
Break It Down: Work your way through a stack of colored blocks by assuming their form. When a shape is removed, the wall above will begin to crumble.
Spot On: Challenge up to three players (or four teams of two) in a game of contortion H-O-R-S-E. Create a shape and see if your friends can match it.
Team up with another player for cooperative play or go head-to-head in any game mode. TwisterTM Mania supports up to eight players in turn based pairs.

I love how we can all look at the photos at the end of each game session, it’s fun to see who had the best pose, of course, we took actual photos too.

D3 Presents Ben 10 Galactic Racing Xbox 360

Racing games are my favorite kind of video games, always have been and always will be. I just love racing around the track and Ben 10 Galactic Racing brings a new fun adventure to the screen with the Omnimatrix of changing characters and powers. It’s like Mario Kart in a way but at the same time different. It’s Ben 10 and you can play as either Ben, Kevin or choose from 13 fan-favorite aliens. BEN 10 Galactic Racing presents the ultimate racing experience, where every character has a special ability to utilize on the race track and even Ben can transform into different aliens mid-race!  We played this as a family one night. Zoe against dad, mom against Miles and Zoe against Miles and Dad against Mom. We just kept taking turns until our hands hurt. It was a fun family night in. I had a great time playing and loved using my power ups to make my husband crash! Yep, I’m that kind of wife.

The Game Premise:

Every one thousand years, the Galvan alien species holds a celebration in space, where aliens from all over the galaxy attend a high-speed race. In BEN 10 Galactic Racing, players will compete as Ben himself, or choose from 15 fan-favorite aliens, in the Galactic Grand Prix Race that takes place in more than 25 exhilarating and challenging grand-prix tracks spread across five different planets from the BEN 10 universe.

This fast-paced and interstellar racer is coming this Fall to PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and Wii.Img2

Key Features Worth Mentioning:

  • Become a Champion! – Select a character and compete against opponents in a circuit of action-packed, high-speed races in increasingly challenging tracks filled with offensive and defensive pick-ups, where players earn awards along the way.
  • Enjoy a BEN 10 Multiplayer Experience Like Never Before – The first BEN 10 racing game allows players to compete against up to three friends to become the champion racer.
  • Race as Your Favorite Characters – Players can race as Ben, who can transform into aliens mid-race, or as other characters from the BEN 10 universe, each of which can use unique offensive and defensive attacks themed to that character’s abilities. New alien hero Fasttrack makes his video game debut!
  • Fun and Challenging Grand Prix Tracks – Players can burn rubber on more than 25 distinct race tracks, which include extreme courses that shift mid-race, on five massive worlds. Players can also choose from more than 30 karts, some based on vehicles seen in the BEN 10 series, and others are available as special unlockables.
  • Original Storyline with an Exceptional Level of Authenticity – The game is based on the phenomenally-successful Cartoon Network original animated BEN 10 series and the game’s art style, sound effects and music are 100% authentic to the show.

Our only complaint would be that the Xbox 360 gamer points are only available in single person mode. It’s quite a bit of fun earning gamer points. It’s one of my husband’s main objectives when he’s playing a game.

Xbox 360 Kinect For Kids Once Upon A Monster Active Video Game

Once Upon a Monster is the BEST game we have played so far on Xbox 360 Kinect for Zoe and Miles. They can do all of it by themselves and the game is smart enough to let them leave and come back as they feel like. When you have kids their age they are all over the place game wise. So I LOVE Once Upon A Monster.

I completely agree with Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President, Production and Development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. She said, “Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster is a very engaging title, which provides families with young kids a quality experience unlike anything they have seen before”. It’s engaging because the kids want to make Cookie Monster and Elmo do the right thing. See I took a photo of Zoe and Miles trying to imitate the screen.

IMG_5390

And they kept trying until they got it. You see, they had to make Cookie Monster and Elmo do that the brown monster was doing, (I already forgot the brown monster’s name.)

IMG_5389

Samantha Ryan also said Once Upon A Monster is  “Full of life lessons, like building friendships and overcoming fears, the game combines the values and appeal of the beloved Sesame Street brand with Double Fine Productions’ talent for creating lush and exciting worlds while delivering a fun game that parents can feel good about purchasing.” I would totally buy this game. It’s perfect for them and gets them off the couch and dancing. Check out Miles grooving to some Disco fever music

Once Upon a Monster has six enchanting chapters to explore with multiple activities. They “turn” the page by pulling out. No I take that back, they jump into a chapter by pulling out and they turn the page by swiping. They know how to swipe, as the Xbox 360 dashboard is full of swiping.

As I sorta mentioned above it has drop-in/drop-out co-operative modes that work really well. This game is REALLY REALLY good at it. They can both leave and then the game pauses. When they return it picks them back up. Having played quite a few Kinect games, I really can tell you that this feature hardly ever works as well as it does in Once Upon A Monster.

My favorite feature of this game is that the kids are active. It actually gets them moving.

Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster on Kinect for Xbox 360 is rated “E” and available now at retail stores nationwide at a S.R.P. of $49.99.

Miles and Michael Jackson The Experience Kinect

There is nothing cuter than watching my little man dance to thriller while playing Michael Jackson The Experience on Xbox 360’s Kinect. I love to dance and Michael Jackson has some of the best music known to man for dancing. We’ve been really enjoying the Kinect as a family, the kids know how to move their hands over the controls to choose their own games and we were impressed that Michael Jackson The Experience was easy enough for them to get from one screen to another, now the dance moves, that’s another story all together. Moving like Michael Jackson does is HARD. But that being said, the scoring is very forgiving, compared to Dance Central the kids can actually score on Michael Jackson The Experience verses playing Dance Central where they don’t even get one star. So they are encouraged to keep trying with Michael Jackson The Experience. Zoe even earned a purple crown for some of her dance moves and she was quite excited about that.

image

There are different stages of play. You can practice the moves, put a lot of moves together, but I felt like once I actually caught on to a move then it moved on to a new one. I think it will just take us a lot of practice to get the moves right. Then you can move up to another stage of play and you dance and sing. I was much better at the singing portion because it was just like karaoke, I was really worried the singing part was going to be completely from memory and I am a Michael Jackson fan but I’m not uber fan if you know what I mean.

imageThe song selection is not as large as I thought it would be but there are quite a few songs that I know and love including “Beat It, “Billie Jean” and “Smooth Criminal.” You will find new additions to the Kinect song library “Blood on the Dance Floor” and “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.”  For families who feed off competition, parents can challenge their kids to dance-offs using the multi-player game modes!

We used the multiplayer game mode where we worked as a team to earn points because the kids love to watch their silhouette on the screen. Whenever the number changed letting them know it was someone else’s turn they would jump up to center stage and start dancing.

Other Michael Jackson The Experience Kinect Features:

  • Feel the thrill of performing like Michael Jackson as never before – through XBOX 360 Kinect technology, you can immerse yourself in his universe and live The Experience of a lifetime!
  • With innovative full-body tracking, take center stage with a crew of expert backup dancers.
  • Trigger effects, visuals, and even the music itself as you move around the digital environment.
  • Play with up to 4 players in Jump-in Party modes.
  • Learn how to pull off Michael’s most iconic moves (such as the Moonwalk) thanks to the Michael Jackson School!

Looking at this game made me think of how fun it would be to play Pictionary with the kids. Zoe and Miles both enjoy art and drawing and this would be a great opportunity to get them to try their hands at drawing items. I can just picture my husband and I trying to guess at what Miles drew and his sister knowing exactly what he drew. Of course, I need to give my husband more credit than me. My daughter wrote on her artwork from church the other day and it said, Happy Easter. He found all the letters and was able to read it.
