Getting Kids to Read: Kellogg’s Partners with Scholastic

I love reading to Zoe and Miles. I’ve always read to them, Zoe when she was a baby, I read the last two Harry Potter novels to her. It was the only time I had to read to myself so I read them aloud. I slept when she slept, that was a time before I had my blog. Now, I have no time to read to myself and since Zoe and Miles absorb every word they hear I have to read age appropriate books to them. Now we read books like Pinkalicious and Cars 2 books.

The love of reading can start at a very early age, we as parents need to encourage it as much as we can. Providing kids with as many books and reading materials as we can is the first step. Taking your kids to the library often is also a great step. My children adore the library they love to go up to the shelves and pick out books to look at, sometimes they change their mind and it’s just amazing how free they feel to do that. It’s also so interesting to see their different interests in books. Zoe looks for books that are pink and purple and Miles looks for books with cars, trucks and scientific looking things on them. Knowing the importance of reading, this fall as you pick out snacks for school at Wal-Mart, you also have the opportunity to get a free book from Scholastic Book Clubs! Select specially-marked Kellogg’s products, including  Raisin Bran®, Mini-Wheats® Little Bites Original, Nutri-Grain®, Eggo®, Pop-Tarts®, Cheez-it®, and Rice Krispies Treats®, which are available now exclusively at Wal-Mart. Whenever you buy two of these products you can redeem the codes found inside for a free $5 coupon for a free book from Scholastic Book Clubs or the Scholastic Store Online.

Morning Star Farms Veggie Dog Giveaway

I want to introduce you to a new reviewer, one of my neighbors Orshi, and I believe she brings a unique perspective and I’m happy to have her on my team. If you remember right before Easter she shared her Egg Blowing Tips and I found it fascinating. For her first review she received MorningStar Farms Veggie Corn Dogs.

This is her MorningStar Farms Veggie Dog review:

We do not eat much processed food in our house mainly because I like to know exactly what I serve to my family. I love to cook and having children with allergies requires me to monitor what they put in their little mouths. But we love hot dogs! They are a ‘delicacy’ that all three children enjoy. And when I say ‘delicacy’ it is because we don’t get to eat them often in our house. My primary dislike against hot-dogs is that being a processed meat product, they always have Nitrites in them – which is something that I cut from our diet a while ago. Not to mention that they are loaded with fat. So I was really excited to try the MorningStar Farms Veggie Corn Dogs – a healthier and Nitrite free version of the meat based hot dogs.

Some fun facts about these corn dogs:

· They have 75% less fat than the leading beef corn dogs

· One serving has only 150 calories

· They are fun to eat served with your favorite sauce

· Perfect meal for vegetarians

The first serving I made for my children for lunch was warmed in the microwave. They were done in a snap and my son LOVED it. I think he found the concept of having lunch on a stick very cool and he gobbled it up and asked for a second one. I also made one for myself and while I found it really delicious by flavor, the texture did not fully appeal to me. The batter got a bit rubbery in the microwave. So the second time I warmed the corn dogs in the oven according to the directions on the package. They were much more delicious this way as the corn batter warmed through and got a crunchy bite on it that I would expect from this American classic. These dogs make a perfect lunch or snack served with some fruit or veggies – Nitrite free and low in fat.

I have several vegetarian friends who love this product and since I entertain often, this will also be one of my go-to quick snacks when they drop by.

Action For Healthy Kids Share Your Breakfast with Kellogg’s

You might have missed the Share Your Breakfast twitter party on Tuesday morning with @MomBloggersClub, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late for you to help make a difference in someone else’s morning. Kellogg’s has partnered with Action for Healthy Kids because they want to make a difference helping children who go to school on an empty stomach.

Can you believe that nearly 1 in 4 kids in America struggle with hunger? It’s not that surprising with the rise in the cost of gas and that groceries keep going up in cost. The easiest meal to skip is breakfast, but facts show it’s very important to have a well balanced breakfast to start off your day. The Kellogg’s Company believes in this and that the power of breakfast can help families make the most out of each day.

To Help, Kellogg’s hopes to share 1 million breakfasts in the 2011-2012 school year.

How Can You Help?

orange cinnamon rolls

Share Your Breakfast! Now through July, Kellogg’s is asking people to take a picture of their breakfast and share it at ShareYourBreakfast.com. By just uploading one photo to www.shareyourbreakfast.com or by texting the word SHARE with a photo or a description of your breakfast to 21534 one breakfast will be shared.

Every morning, Zoe loves to have oatmeal, a banana, vitamin and a glass of milk. Well, daddy made these wonderful Orange Cinnamon Rolls one morning and we all thought she would be happy for a change. Nope, this girl didn’t like the orange cinnamon rolls and had to have her bowl of oatmeal, a banana and glass of milk. I just had to share that about Zoe, realistically, I feel very fortunate that we are able to put food on the table and give our children anything at all, let alone let them have a choice in what they have for breakfast. So, I’m going to upload this photo of our Saturday morning breakfast with dad, to help donate one breakfast to a family in need!

What does your family like to have for breakfast?

Oh For the Love of Controversy

The controversy over the HFCS post I wrote has become quite popular, or un-popular I should say. The last time I had such a popular post that wasn’t a giveaway was when I was writing about my organs falling out and the anxiety I live with. Let me tell you, this mess has caused my anxiety to come back a lot quicker than I expected it to. I usually only deal with the anxiety once a month but this might be a long month for me. With popular bloggers writing about me, some linking to me and other’s respecting me and my site; I wonder if I actually have a thick enough skin to seriously partake in this Blogging Community. If I am going to take on controversial posts I need to develop that thick skin quickly!

corn-fieldI took the Corn Refiners campaign because every time I support a company like Kellogg’s or Sara Lee I get nasty e-mails about myself as a mother or about the health of my children. I do care about my children and if you knew me personally you would think I was a sugar Nazi. I honestly don’t care about HFCS at all, and I never said I did in the post. I said I think of it as I do sugar, and I limit sugar of any kind in my children’s diets so much so that my children’s doctor had to tell me to let them have a little bit. If I limit it all the time, when they are in an environment that I’m not there to control then they’ll over indulge. My kids don’t get juice, cookies or ice cream unless it’s a special treat and those are rare. My husband gave them some cotton candy the other day and I thought I was going to have a heart attack on the spot. But in moderation, a little processed food or sugar of any kind is not going to kill my kids. I cook dinner for my kids often, but I’m also a mom of convenience and I’m not afraid to share that with my readers. I’m not a crunchy and I’ve never pretended to be. When I shop for foods, I look for any of the key words that mean sugar, syrup, HFCS, glucose, fructose, and sugar itself, I don’t buy things that have sugar as a main ingredient. I also look at the calories, fat, and number of sugars in the nutritional information. That is what I think all moms should do. Set limits.

So why is it so bad to write a post raising awareness? I was completely up front with who the presenters/experts were. I even mentioned who each one worked for and who they were associated with. I knew it was slanted by the Corn Refiners and anyone looking at my post should have been able to see that fact. I even wonder how many people actually Read my post before jumping on their I hate HFCS and Corn Refiners band wagons. Did you even notice that we might be dealing with a new branding here. I wanted to raise awareness that HFCS might be rebranding to corn sugar.

I took this campaign because I knew it was controversial and that I would get comments. I never expected to be so honored by being linked to on numerous other blogs. In fact it makes me think that yes I was under paid by the Corn Refiners and Mom Central because my reach is much larger than I expected it to be. In all honestly, I want to thank those of you that are using me as an example. You have raised my traffic and stats and have raised even more awareness about the Corn Refiners and their plans than I ever could have on my own. I’m just a little disgusted at some of the comments being left on those posts! You all want to send me into Mommy Over Protective Monster over here. So while I go out and get some fresh air, you’ll have to forgive me for not leaving comments on all of your posts or stirring the pot anymore than this response here.

I appreciate my readers because you were all very kind and left informative comments.

To the Rest of you…Understand that there is a blogger, a person with feelings that is writing these posts. Attack the content and not the person. Dragging my name or any of the other blogger’s names through the mud because we wrote about something you do not agree with is only hurtful. Understand, my opinions cannot be bought. I write what I want to write about regardless of someone paying me or not. I pick and choose and you may not agree with me.

We get super excited when Tillamook ice cream is on sale for 2 for 9.00 so when I saw the sale I grabbed three and am currently considering going back to Albertons to purchase more on Tuesday before the sale ends. Kelloggs Chocolate FiberPlus snack bars Taste Test for Two

Kelloggs sent me three different FiberPlus snack bars to taste test: Dark Chocolate Almond, Chocolate Chip and Chocolatey Peanut Butter. Each bar has 35% of your daily fiber, and antioxidants like Vitamin E and Zinc. They come six in a box individually wrapped and have 130 calories per bar.

Kellogg's™ FiberPlus™ Antioxidants Bar Chocolatey Peanut ButterChocolatey Peanut Butter: 130 calories: This was my favorite flavor out of the three. I love peanut butter and chocolate and the combinations is delightful. The taste of this snack bar is a tantalizing delight. I could eat the whole box in one sitting if I wasn’t careful.

Kellogg's™ FiberPlus™ Antioxidants Bar Dark Chocolate AlmondDark Chocolate Almond: 130 calories. I didn’t like this flavor, I found it to be a bit too sweet and gritty. I’m not a big fan of almonds because they are gritty and I expect dark chocolate to be not sweet, so my expectations were off when I was trying it. I’m sure if you like chocolate and almonds you’ll find it to be a better match for your tastes.

Kellogg's™ FiberPlus™ Antioxidants Bar Chocolate ChipChocolate Chip: 120 calories: This is my second favorite out of the three and it was by a small margin that it lost. The texture is a lot better than other Fiber Bars that are out there. It only lost to first because it was lacking peanut butter. Yum!

Kelloggs sent me the samples and made no requirement for me to post my review. This is what I honestly think of these bars and I hope that my readers can enjoy them too. Kelloggs is also supplying the prize.

Two of my readers can participate in this taste test too!

To Enter:

All you have to do is tell me what snack bar you are currently eating, if you aren’t eating any bars, what snacks do you eat?

Kellogg’s Fruit Loops with Fiber Pass the Kid Test

Statistics show that an average of 9 out of 10 kids lack enough fiber in their diets? Which explains why every where you look food says “now with fiber”.  I had no idea it was that high, probably means I’m not getting enough fiber too. Kellogg’s knows how tough of a time we have finding ways to increase our child’s intake of anything healthy, and they came up with a great solution by adding a boost of fiber to some of their most popular kids’ cereals.

Yes, Kellogg’s did send me cereal to try, but we did purchase some just a week before the review was sent to us. I bought a huge box that we are still working on and we are enjoying them. My husband eats them for breakfast on Saturdays with the kids. We feel that eating meals together as a family is very important.

There are no changed other than the addition of Fiber. I check calories, sugar, vitamins, the cereal is still fortified with all of the nutrition you are looking for when caring for your family. They just added fiber and that is needed for healthy digestion.

I do want to say that my husband enjoys them. Which is funny because I was expecting  him to say these are disgusting and taste like cardboard. Because that is exactly what he thinks of Kellogg’s Fiber Pop Tarts. Kellogg’s you need to work on your pop tarts recipe with fiber.
