Twister Mania Kinect Xbox 360

Growing up I always loved playing Twister. It’s such a fun party game to play with lots of friends and I loved the challenge. Thinking about playing this as a family on the Xbox 360 Kinect left me wondering how is that going to work when we merge into one solid shape as we get all twisted up. That’s where the mania came in turning Twister Mania for the Kinect into a smash hit in our house. The interface of the game gets an A+ because it was so easy for our family to use. This game works quite well for little ones and is an easy to play Kinect game.

image

This interactive digital Twister® experience allows up to eight players to twist into the action with 16 fun, unique ways to play in a TWISTER- inspired environment filled with iconic, colorful flair. We had the most fun playing as teams, we did two teams of two and it worked out fabulously. Most kinect games with the kids drive me crazy because it’s so hard to tell a 3 and 4 year old how to make the kinect work, but for Twister Mania it just worked and it was fun. I really enjoyed playing it.

IMG_5953IMG_5955

To Play Twister Mania you use your body as the game piece. It challenges you to twist yourself in thousands of different ways and the quicker the better.

We chose from 3 main game modes:

Party Play: Twirl the virtual spinner and advance around the Twister® mat with up to four teams of two in Party Play, a metagame that combines all game challenges. Party play was the easiest mode for us as a family. the kids could understand that when the color wheel came up with their color it was their teams turn. So we all jumped in and out of the living room and laughed as everyone tried to do the different objectives in party play.

Play It All: Try your hand at every game challenge from start to finish in this campaign mode for the overachievers. I think my husband spent hours doing this game mode the other night while I was out having a moms night out. It was so funny to come in and see him making more poses, but I wasn’t just laughing at him, I was happy to see him enjoying a game. We haven’t enjoyed a Kinect game like this since it first came out.
Quick Play: Jump right in and directly select any of the 16 ways to play and difficulty level for a quick challenge. Is a great way to just get started.

Now within each of the different game modes there are certain activities within each. Here is just a sampling of what you’ll find.  (a total of 16 ways to play)

Shape Frenzy: Mimic the shape (there are over 1800!) that appears on screen and earn points based on how well you fill its silhouette.
Twist & Fit: Avoid the wall and fit your silhouette through cutouts coming at you on a moving wall. Score points by passing through a wall without touching a thing; the more wall you hit the lower your score.
Break It Down: Work your way through a stack of colored blocks by assuming their form. When a shape is removed, the wall above will begin to crumble.
Spot On: Challenge up to three players (or four teams of two) in a game of contortion H-O-R-S-E. Create a shape and see if your friends can match it.
Team up with another player for cooperative play or go head-to-head in any game mode. TwisterTM Mania supports up to eight players in turn based pairs.

I love how we can all look at the photos at the end of each game session, it’s fun to see who had the best pose, of course, we took actual photos too.

Clue From The World of Harry Potter

After much anticipation, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” is finally in theaters! The fun from the movie doesn’t have to end with the beloved series, when you add Clue: World of Harry Potter to your game closet.

Harry Potter Clue Game Box

Clue: World of Harry Potter is not your average game of Clue. Of course, it’s been years since I’ve played a game of Clue so maybe it’s changed since I last played. I can’t tell you for sure. Hasbro went to great lengths to bring you vivid details from the Harry Potter books and movies we all love to the game of Clue.

IMG_2138

The very first thing I noticed was how complicated the game was going to be. It’s hard to see from the picture, but each room has a wheel that spins and the doors open and close among other things. The red doors are open and the black doors are closed.

harry potter clue board

The actual game pieces include colored tokens, identity cards, two die, floo powder currency, the bad guys (at first I didn’t realize why all the round pieces were bad guys, because only the bad guys commit a crime in Harry Potter, duh!). Anyways, you pick an identity card, one of the good guys, Harry Potter, Jenny, Ron, Hermione. One of the remaining identity cards becomes the student that disappears and that is when your mystery begins.

IMG_2125

The picture above is a picture of the floo powder tokens and one of the room spinners. You can use your floo powder credits to travel about the board even faster, but watch out for unlit fireplaces. When you’re sure of your facts, go to The Burrow to make your final accusation and win the game!

 IMG_2132

The basic play of the game is the same. You pick a location card, a criminal card, and a weapon card and you put them in the Clue envelope. Then you pass out the rest of the mystery cards to the players. Using the cards you have you narrow down who you think did it, in which room they did it in and what spell they cast to do it. You movie your token card however many spaces you roll on the green card from your colored starting point.

The black die and the spinners for the rooms are where the extras to the game come in. Depending on what you roll you will have to perform different actions.

Full List of Contents: Game board, 6 Identity cards, 6 movers, 29 Help cards, 32 Dark cards, 21 Mystery cards, 1 notepad, 40 Floo powder tokens, 6 Suspect tokens, 6 Item tokens, 1 envelope, 1 green die, 1 black die, 1 label sheet, instructions. For 2 – 4 players.

Family Game Night This Week We’re Playing Scrabble Slam

imageRemember a few weeks ago we were playing Ratuki as a family? I’m a very strong proponent for playing games together as a family, even when the game may drive me insane. Family time makes strong happy families. As long as you are spending time together you know what everyone is up too. It’s easy to sneak in conversation while playing a fun game.

Now I received a new game from Hasbro, Scrabble Slam when I was at BlogHer last year and I’m just not getting around to writing about it. I put it in the Christmas Present box, I was going to give it to my husband in his Christmas Stocking, but then we decided not to do adult stockings, so, it was still shelved  until last month.

Scrabble Slam game directions and instructions:

Scrabble Slam is a fast paced word card game. To play, you put four cards down to spell out any word that the players can all agree on. Then you deal out all the remaining cards to 2-4 players. The more players playing the fewer cards you have to hold in your hands.

Then you place one card down at a time spelling a new word until all of your cards are played. There are no turns you just play as fast as you can. The player that discards all of their cards first is the winner. Each Card has two letters on it, one on each side of the card and it is up to you to decide to choose which letter you want to play. See the example below.

Scrabble Slam Cards

It is a very fast paced game and I had the advantage at first when I was playing against my husband. He was overwhelmed by having so many cards in his hand at one time, as soon as he was down a few cards, he caught up and won the game. Scrabble Slam is for ages 8+ for 2-4 players.

imageWe had a lot of fun playing Scrabble Slam, it’s a quick game and easy to play if you don’t have a lot of time to spend together. You know, Monopoly takes a long time, if you don’t have time to play Monopoly, my personal favorite game, then play Scrabble Slam!

Scrabble is happy to announce the launch of their new Facebook page dedicated to all things Scrabble. Whether you’re a fan of the classic board game, or enjoy Scrabble Flash, Scrabble Slam or Scrabble Junior (or all of the above!), this page will be a one-stop shop for word lovers. Find daily word challenges, words of the day, coupon offers, Scrabble news and tips, online gaming, and School Scrabble info, with more exciting features still to come! Visit www.Facebook.com/ScrabbleNA to “Like” them.

We received a sample of Scrabble Slam at BlogHer 2010.

Family Game Night, We’re playing Ratuki this week!

Ratuki

ratuki cardsIn high school one of my favorite games to play was speed. Are you familiar with that game. You use a deck of cards or two, and then you place the cards in order from 1 to A or A to 1 depending if they are going up or down. Ratuki is a card game played the same way except you only go up and down from 1 to 5 and you have four stacks to play from at one time. You have five cards in your hand and you draw every time you place a card and the first person that gets rid of all of their cards. A Ratuki card is wild and may be used at any time. Then when you are out of cards you have to yell, “Ratuki”.

As part of a resolution to have a Family Game Night, we’re trying new games together. I had a lot of fun playing this game with my husband. He and I love playing games together and before my blog we used to play a lot! Of course, that’s also before we had any kids too! Where does all the time go. Our goal this year is to have more family time with the kids and spend more time playing games together just the two of us. I hope to have a review of Monopoly Revolution up soon!

Karen Deerwester (relationship expert) reminds us that “laughter is the foundation for a resilient happy family” … “Family Game Nights renew families and encourage us to be our best and have fun!” She has 5 tips for us on how to de-stress and play together.

  1. Don’t over-schedule. Choose a night that works for the entire family and enjoy un-plugged fun with Hasbro games
  2. Give yourself a break and plan for a takeout dinner to save time for games during Family Game Night
  3. Get the children involved by having them choose games — they’ll be excited to participate!
  4. Bring home new games to inspire unexpected fun
  5. Reward the family for playing by giving special awards, privileges and treats

We received a copy of Ratuki card game from Hasbro for review.

How to Use Hasbro Vintage Star Wars Action Figures to Make a Monopoly Game

Hasbro Sent us one Han Solo action figure this year to get me to advertise about their release of Vintage Star Wars Action Figures, well that brought up some very fond memories of what my husband gave me for Christmas years ago.

IMG_7272I love Han Solo, so my husband bought every single Han Solo action figure he could find to make me the Monopoly of my dreams. Oh, have I ever mentioned that I’m addicted to the game Monopoly and we have over 50 versions of the game, and yes, My Han Solo edition that my husband made is my favorite version of Monopoly!

This is basically what he did.

He used the movie, the actual movie to capture high quality graphics to create game board. I don’t have the game board anymore or I would show you a picture of it. The board didn’t survive moving and storage, but we do have the digital copies somewhere so my husband can recreate it for me sometime.

He spend hours hunting down the action figures about 7 years ago. It looks like Star Wars action figures are a lot easier to find right now verses 5 years ago. But anyhow, he  found about 10 different characters and half of them were all different versions of Han Solo.

He found some acrylic frames and used those as the boards for the action figures to stand on. He hot glued them down.

acrylic framesStar Wars Action Figures

He printed up chance, and community chest cards and called them Fate of the Galaxy and Pilot’s Maneuver.  He used beads as currency, and wooden pieces as houses and really cool carved pieces as the hotels. IMG_7273

He also put a great amount of detail into the Monopoly property cards.

I can not tell you how much my husband and I love to play games together, it’s really sad to say that I spend way more time on the computer than with him. Which is why I’m such a strong supporter of creating a family game night in your family. Then you all force yourselves to stop everything that you are doing and be a family, make happy memories and just have a great time together.

If you have gifts to check off on your holiday shopping list or are in search for fun entertainment as your family gathers during the yuletide season, look no further than the game aisle. On December 5, the USA Weekend to had exclusive coupons offering $5 off a great selection of Hasbro games including brands that you know and love, such as Scrabble, Twister, Trivial Pursuit, Sorry!, Pictureka!, and more. And starting December 6, visit www.familygamenight.com to access these coupons online. It’s not too late to get a few coupons!

I received two action figures in exchange for this post. I donated one to the Tweetdrive in Seattle and kept the other for my Han Solo edition Monopoly game.

Seattle #TweetDrive 2010 Almost Wordless Wednesday

I LOVE using my influence on-line to make a difference in my community. Last week we had a tweet up in Seattle and I helped gather swag, donations and door prizes. The event was the Seattle Tweet Drive. I posted in detail about the Seattle Tweetdrive a few weeks ago when I started looking for sponsors and I’m so happy with all the companies that supported us. See the full list below! We had a great turnout and Look at what we did for the charity Treehouse! I’m exhausted and extremely behind on my blog posts, but I feel great because it was all for a really great cause. Club Sur donated the space, My Seattle Night Out organized the event, and local bands and entertainers donated their time and efforts for all of us to have a great time! We gathered around 333 toys total! Tweet Drive is going on nationally in many different locations, check Tweet Drive 2010 to find a location next to you.

Hasbro Furreal Friends LuLu, My Cuddlin’ Kitty

imageFurreal Friends Lulu is another donation that Hasbro sent for the toy drive. Zoe and Miles both wanted to open it and play with it. I actually did too because of how interactive it was just inside the box. My Cuddlin’ Kitty reminded me of a cat I had as a child but it didn’t have any sensors and react to my movement. Lulu purrs and meows whenever you walk by or as you play with him. So I placed Lulu in our garage and I forgot about her. One day, I kept hearing this kitten meowing and it was driving me crazy. I was sure there was a imagecat in my yard somewhere and it needed some food. Well, I finally figured out that it was the cat. Now that I know for sure there is no kitten in my yard, I still get creeped out every time I walk by it.

FURREAL FRIENDS LULU, MY CUDDLIN’ KITTY

clip_image001image(HASBRO/Ages 4 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $54.99/Available: Fall 2010)

LULU, MY CUDDLIN’ KITTY pet is the most realistic feline in the FURREAL FRIENDS family. The "purr-fect" pet for little girls, LULU, MY CUDDLIN’ KITTY pet features an all new look with her beautiful, snow-white fur. LULU preens, cuddles, and mews just like a "real" kitty cat and she loves to snuggle; gently rub her back and she will “purr" and "meow" to show that she is happy. Once she’s relaxed, LULU will roll over onto her back, indicating it’s time to have her tummy rubbed. Just like a real cat, LULU preens as she "licks" her little paw, then lifts it up to clean her adorable face. Lulu comes complete with a pink comb so girls can make her pretty! Requires four “C” batteries, included. Available at most major toy retailers nationwide and on HasbroToyShop.com.

Playskool Weebles Musical Treehouse

imagePlayskool was at BlogHer and they had a great display of toys that are coming out this year. Weebles had a very strong presence and there was a case that you could just pull them out of and load up your bag with them. I knew my kids were too old to keep them so I didn’t grab any but I could tell that they were going to be a hit with kids 18 months and up. The Weebles Musical Treehouse looks like a lot of fun. This again is another donation that Playskool sent us to give to the charity of our choice. We’re having another toy drive this year and this is on the stack of toys to give and should be on your toy list for kids 18 months and up. We didn’t open it so I can’t do a full toy review, but I wanted to provide a toy description to thank Playskool.

Adventure Heroes Hero On the Go Playset

imagePLAYSKOOL was kind enough to make a donation to my Holiday Toy Drive. One of the donations was the Adventure Heroes Hero on the Go Playset. Zoe and Miles had a great time helping me sort through the donations. The Adventure Heroes Hero on the Go Playset was a big hit with Miles and he continues to try to play with it while I have it waiting for our toy delivery later next month. The Fire Hero On-The-Go Pack is exactly what they sent us.  We haven’t taken it out of the box so that we can donate it as a new toy donation for a child in need.

Wordless Wednesday–Donations and Hasbro Halloween Treats

image

Wordless Wednesdays are usually just wordless for me, but this week, I needed to share just a little bit about the products in the picture. At Costco, and I noticed they are on sale at Target this week too, you can purchase the Play-Doh Halloween Packs. I hate letting my kids have candy so getting an alternative to candy is great because then they can play with it and I’m not stressing over the candy. Anyways, the 20 count packages are on sale at Target this week for 4.99 and you can purchase two 20 count bags at Costco and I didn’t see what the price was.

image

This this is a picture of our box for Operation Christmas Child. We put the Mr. Potato Head Trick or Tator in amongst all of the other toys to fill up the box. We also put a few of the Play-Doh containers in the box to fill in the gaps. The rest we’ll be sharing with our friends for Halloween. Thank you Hasbro for these wonderful Halloween treasures.

You can find all of the Hasbro Seasonal Items at Hasbro.com

We received samples from Hasbro for this Happy Halloween Post!
