On Tuesday “Invictus” was released by Warner Brothers. Clint Eastwood created a masterpiece directing “Invictus” with actors Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Morgan Freeman plays Nelson Mandela in the early stages of his Presidency. It began when he was released from prison. He was in prison for being a terrorist against his country and in his 27 years of prison he learned what most men cannot. He learned how to forgive with a heart bigger than any other I have ever seen.
My history lessons came up short in my knowledge of Nelson Mandela. In this feature-length documentary I learned quite a bit about South Africa and how a rugby team brought the country to unite. Matt Damon plays the rugby team captain, and watching it, I felt like he was a little too quite to be a rugby captain.
The South African Team is the worst team in the world. However, they get to host the World Cup so that guarantees them a spot. Mandela realizes that all the people that hate him love the rugby team and everyone else wants to shut them down. By helping inspire the team captain to lead the team to victory, the love of sports finally comes out of everyone. Then everyone has something in common to unite over. I was inspired because Mandela’s plan worked like magic. It worked on the hardest of hearts.
Synopsis
What does Nelson Mandela do after becoming president of South Africa? He rejects revenge, forgives oppressors who jailed him 27 years for his fight against apartheid and finds hope of national unity in an unlikely place: the rugby field. Clint Eastwood (named 2009’s Best Director by the National Board of Review) directs an uplifting film about a team and a people inspired to greatness. Morgan Freeman (NBR’s Best Actor Award winner and Oscar nominee for this role) is Mandela, who asks the national rugby team captain (Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Matt Damon) and his squad to do the impossible and win the World Cup. Prepare to be moved – and thrilled. http://invictusmovie.warnerbros.com/dvd/index.html
