Dream Big Little Pig By Kristi Yamaguchi!

dream bit little pigMy little girl loves to read. She adores reading. She’s 4! Sourcebooks Jabberwocky published Dream Big Little Pig by Kristi Yamaguchi and sent us a copy to review. Zoe made me sit down with her and read it to her. It was time to make dinner, but I sat down and read it to her first. Then I got up to make dinner. After dinner, I read it to her again, then she took the book from me and started reading it to me.

In Dream Big Little Pig we meet Poppy the pig. Now Poppy has great dreams of being a famous pig. She wants to be a star and her mom dad, grandparents and best friend all tell her to dream big and believe in yourself. Poppy finds that her natural talent is not singing or dancing. She’s not graceful enough to be a top super model, but she does have determination to make it big.

dream big little pig

It was on a day out having fun with her family that she realized she wanted to try ice skating. This was something she could learn and work at. She practiced and practiced and everyone was impressed that a pig could skate at all. So everyone she knew was watching her and that made her feel like a star.

Dream Big Little Pig empowers little girls to believe in themselves. Author Yamaguchi’s sage advice, “When things get in the way, keep trying, ” is gold like her.  With my own daughter, I have to constantly remind her that yes she can do things. So now whenever she has doubts, I’m going to get out this book and remind her that yes she can! She just has to try and sometimes work very hard, but she should never stop dreaming and believing. Dream Big Little Pig appeals to girls ages 4 to 8.

We received a copy of Dream Big Little Pig to review.

God Gave Us the World Children’s Book Review and Giveaway

From the mouth of Polar Bears comes the story of how everyone in the world is different. God Gave us the World is a story about different bears, different places, and the same world all from the same wonderful Creator. I read God Gave Us the World to my children and enjoyed reading from the perspective of Little Cub. Little Cub reminded me of how many questions Zoe likes to ask me every day.

One of the most pertinent questions to me was when Little Cub asked his mom, “Why would any bears want to live anywhere else?”

Our world is so big and there are so many different places to live. Take me for example, I used to live in Texas and grew up in the land of the sun. Now I live in the land of the rain. I would love to go back to such a warm sunny place, but my husband being from here really loves it here. And it’s a lot easier to be cold and wear a coat than be hot and not able to take anything off. Anyways, what I’m trying to say is that we are all different. God made us this way and it’s important to learn about differences and diversity and to be able to adjust for others. God gave us this big world to live in and to share!

This is a cute story that will help children learn about diversity on their level!

More About God Gave Us the World:

Zoe Knows about Creation: The Read and Share Bible Review and Giveaway

Zoe ExcitedI’m so impressed with The Read and Share Bible published by Thomas Nelson because Zoe has been learning the Bible stories and uses The Read and Share Bible to teach them to her brother. This is a story about Zoe and Miles learning about night and day!

Miles woke up one morning and said it’s dark outside daddy! Why is it dark outside?

It’s dark outside because the sun went down.

(Zoe ran to her room to grab the Read and Share Bible)

Miles looks at his dad and said, Why?

Daddy said, “Because God made it that way”

In comes Zoe…

“MILES! Let me show you something”..she has the Read and Share bible in her hands, “The sun went down because God told it to go down, so it’s dark, the sun can not come back up until God says the sun can come back up.”

Simple right?

Well to the mind of a 3 year old and 4 year old, it’s simple to trust that God made the day and the night and he controls when they happen!

The Read and Share Bible is perfect for sharing the amazing joy and wonder of God’s Word with little ones in a whole new way. Some of the Bible features include:

· More than 200 beloved Bible stories in short-form, which is ideal for the attention span of younger children

· Bold, bright illustrations

· Discussion starter with each story

· Stories adapted from the International Children’s Bible

· Ideal for guided learning

I’m very impressed with the Read and Share Bible because my kids want to read it every night. Not only do they want to read bible stories, but they sit, listen and learn the stories. They are able to tell me what they learned the next day just from reading the stories. Zoe with her very inquisitive mind asks so many questions as we read each story. It’s a great bible for toddlers!

Chick-fil-A Kid’s Meals Contain New Martha Speaks Books Set Giveaway

Chick-fil-A Kid’s Meals offer Children Books from the Hit PBS TV Show “Martha Speaks”

By Summer:

If you’re a parent of a child who watches the Public Broadcast System (PBS) you’re familiar with the TV show Martha Speaks (even if only by name). Martha, a character created by Susan Meddaugh, is a dog who was fed alphabet soup one time by her owners and instead of the soup going to her stomach it travels to her brain giving her the ability to talk. Kids love Martha! She was first published in 1992 and became an educational program in 2008 and is still currently a hit PBS show.

clip_image002

clip_image004Martha Speaks can be found in books for all levels of readers: chapter books, early readers, and picture books. Currently Chick-fil-A® (one of my FAVORITE restaurants) is giving Martha Speaks books free inside their kid’s meals. Books you won’t be able to get anywhere else: Helen’s All Thumbs, Martha Gives Advice, Best in Show, Martha Plays Favorites, and Firedog Martha. But if you and your child are a clip_image006viewer you might recognize each book as they are based on the PBS teleplays by Raye Lankford Martha Speaks. While supplies last, you can collect all five to add to your library but only at Chick-fil-A® restaurants.

These special Martha Speaks books further your child’s skills to grow on such a vocabulary and social issues. New vocabulary is repeated throughout each story like inside Martha Plays Favorites children will learn about “exclude” and “notice”, or inside Martha Gives Advice children will learn about “advice” and “opinion”. At the end of each book there is also a simple definition for the selected vocabulary. Each story offers solutions to complicated childhood problems like moderating electronic device usage, being yourself, self-worth, love and friendship, and individual contributions to a team effort. Remember, all of these stories and lessons are best learned with the assistance of an adult, so be sure to discuss with your child the topics presented in Martha Speaks.

My sons and I enjoyed these Martha Speaks books. (And you know I love Chick-fil-A, I already shared that! So go get your Kid’s Meal.) Reading all of them has been time well spent with my four year old in particular; I love the quality time of reading. I honestly can’t wait until we read them again soon.

If you’re interested in keeping up with Chick-fil-A and their other offers say up to date with their quarterly Chick-Fil-A e-newsletter or their Chick-fil-A press room, connect with Chick-fil-a on Facebook, and Twitter @ChickfilA.

In order to write this post I was given all five of the Chick-fil-A PBS Martha Speaks books. I hope you and your kids enjoy them as much as we have been.

The Dragon and the Turtle Children’s Book Review

By Summer:

I’m so blessed that both of my children – 4 years old and 18 months old – love to read. My sons have never met a book they don’t like, which is great for early literacy and preparation for school. My sons “read” books all the time alone just looking through the book and possibly (and hopefully) recalling the stories in their heads as they thumb through each page slowly.

clip_image002A new addition to our library is The Dragon and the Turtle: Go On Safari, which is the second book about friends Roger and Padraig in what looks to be the beginning of a series of adventures. My sons, especially the 4 year old, are into dragons so this was one of the main draws for them to read this book. In this adventure of the Dragon and the Turtle, they are camping out in a surprise location where they keep coming in contact with the rarest of beasts in their natural habitat. Together they learn there really isn’t anything to be afraid of on their camping experience, especially if they’re together. The book claims to help children with their fears, but I don’t think the book really addresses this topic, not in text or picture; I had a lot of explaining to do throughout the book about the imaginary animals they were creating by combining animals such as a raccoon and an elephant.

In The Dragon and the Turtle: Go On Safari the pictures are colorful and eye catching for both parents and kids alike. However, I did find, as the reader, that the text seemed more British than American English; for my kids it didn’t seem to draw them out of the story though I did have to concentrate more on my reading as this makes it difficult for me to become captivated. I also feel many of the concepts on the book are unspoken and I had to tell my sons what was happening instead of the story explaining it, clip_image004even through suggestion.

I do like that the authors have taken plain, old story telling to the next level. At the end of the book they have an interaction page where parents are encouraged to make the story real to the child through real life questions and occurrences. However, this is only scratching the surface for how children can become braver and overcome fear. On the Dragon and Turtle website you can expand your child’s adventures with games, crafts, coloring, mazes, and puzzles; and your adventures as you expand your child’s learning.

You can currently find The Dragon and the Turtle: Go On Safari on Amazon.com for about $9 plus free shipping with Amazon Prime. Also check out the original adventure, The Dragon and the Turtle. You can also purchase these fine titles at Barnes and Noble and Christianbook.com*.

* Though this book seems to claim to be a Christian book the only reference to God, Christianity, or the Bible is a verse on the back cover, Deuteronomy 31:6.

The Dragon and the Turtle: Go On Safari book was supplied to me by WaterBrook Press in order to write this review.

Story Time: Madeline at the White House Book Giveaway

Wow, this book showed up this morning, Zoe tore into it, crawled into my lap and asked me to read to her. Oh how I love my daughter so much!

We’ve been watching all of the Madeline DVD’s that we’ve received, so I’m familiar with the storyline, but what I didn’t expect was

how much I enjoyed reading it to her. The story is in a rhyme and just flows. Surprisingly the story ended quickly because it was so fun to read. We greatly enjoyed it.

Madeling at the Whitehouse Book CoverAbout the Book

Welcome to America, Madeline!

Madeline and friends are off to enjoy a wonderful American adventure. The White House in Washington, D.C., is their destination, where they are the guests of the president’s lonely only daughter for the annual Easter Egg Roll. Cake and ice cream, dress-up games, and scary stories told in the dark are capped off by a magical nighttime tour of the capital’s most famous landmarks, before it’s time for the twelve little girls in two straight lines to say, “Au revoir, America!”

The Story Behind the Book

“The idea for sending Madeline to the White House was my grandfather’s and grew out of his friendship with Jacqueline Kennedy. In a series of letters from late 1961 and early 1962, my grandfather sounded out the First Lady on ideas for the book, which he proposed calling “Madeline visits Caroline,” with text from Mrs. Kennedy herself. My grandfather died in 1961, before the book was finished.”          – John Bemelmans Marciano, author and illustrator of Madeline at the White House and grandson of Madeline creator Ludwig Bemelmans

Pledge to Read to your Children 20 minutes a day with Laura Numeroff #giveaway

I was introduced to a new children’s reading program with New York Times best-selling author, Laura Numeroff of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Laura has partnered with Sleepy’s and First Book, a non-profit organization working to provide new books to children in need, to promote family bedtime reading. Research shows that reading at least 20 minutes per night with your child can improve child literacy by 10 whole school days per year. We don’t read to our children at night but this initiative has inspired me to make doubly sure that I read to my children for at least 20 minutes a day. We’ve been reading Dr. Seuss and our reader books that we have. It’s been great for all of use and a good time for me to unplug completely.

There are two days left for Live Story time with Laura. Laura will be conducting in-store readings and signing complimentary copies of her latest book, The Jellybeans and the Big Book Bonanza.

Here is the pledge:

Laura would also like to encourage parents to make a pledge to read to their children at least 20 minutes per night. Each pledge will support Sleepy’s corporate contribution to First Book to provide new books to families in need so more children have access to read. Parents can take the pledge at http://www.sleepysbedtimestories.com and enter for a chance to win lunch with Laura Numeroff in New York City

I’m giving away one copy of her new book: Jellybeans and the big book Bonanza.

Children’s Book Reviews: Snow Takes the Checker! Quickly: The Magic Spatula

Thanks to the Parent Reviewers I received two books to review, Snow Takes the Checker! and Quickly: The Magic Spatula.

http://snowtheracehorse.com/images/large_ttc.pngSnow takes the Checker is a cute book about Snow. It’ part of a series of stories about Snow the Racehorse and her family of racers. In Snow takes the Checker, you will follow Snow as she gets ready for the big animal race coming up. Her partner if you can believe it is a turtle and together they take the race. It’s a quick read and easy for my daughter to sit through as I read it. The fun whimsical  pictures appeal to children like my own and that’s why she keeps asking me to read it to her.

.

Quickly: The Magic SpatulaQuickly: The Magic Spatula, is a book going in the past when two adults find Quickly in an old box belonging to their mother. My husband and I work very hard to create memories for our children to cherish. I even write a series every now and then called Cooking with Kids. This is where my husband and I cook with our children. Just like in Quickly, I remember lots of times where my dad cooked waffles (pancakes in the book) but it was a time where all of us came together and sat as a family to eat. Spending time with family is quite important and building memories is easy. Just read Quickly: The Magic Spatula.

I was provided with these two books for a book tour by Parent Reviewers. All opinions are my own.

God is With me in the morning, God is with me in the Evening #giveaway

 GodDay

God is with Me through the day is a great picture book for kids to remember God throughout the day. We love the picture of the dog on the front but not only that we love the message behind the story. God is with me, is a message we all need a little remind for. This one was more fun for my son because

"When I’m afraid, I say out loud, "God loves me." "I roar like a bear, "I am safe!" And Miles roars like a bear. He loves to roar.

GodNight

God is with Me through the Night is another treat to read to your children. The photos are wonderful and my daughter loves to look at the pictures. She says that’s a baby momma, and I said “God made that baby.” “God is with me, even in the dark. Just like when God kept Daniel safe from the lion, he will keep me safe too." It’s a nice pull in bible lessons with this book. Julie Cantrell did a good job putting these together for little kids.

AuthorPhotoQ&A with Julie Cantrell on God is with Me through the Night and God is with Me through the Day:

Julie’s first picture books, God is with Me through the Day and God is with Me through the Night were published this year by Zondervan to help young children overcome fears while building their faith in God.

Why did you write these picture books?

When my daughter was young, she had a hard time sleeping in her own bed. She was afraid of the dark, and she suffered from terrible nightmares. She loved to read, and she loved animals – so when she was five years old, the two of us worked together to create a bedtime story just for her.

We found stock photos of animals, and we wrote simple text to reassure her that even when I tucked her into her bed at night, she was not alone. I wanted her to feel secure that I would never leave her in a place that wasn’t safe, and that God was always with her—even in the dark.

How did the books become published?

I never intended to publish the book. I wrote it to help my own daughter overcome her fears while building her faith in God. When her friends would sleep over, they all enjoyed the book and wanted me to print copies for them. Then the neighborhood kids asked for copies. I was working in a preschool as a speech-language pathologist at the time, so I read the story to my students. They all reacted positively to the story, so some of the other teachers and parents asked for copies. Their reactions made me think seriously about sharing the story to children on a bigger scale.

I had been working as a freelance writer for many years, so I decided to look for an agent. Several publishers expressed serious interest in the books, and we ended up signing a contract with Zonderkidz (the children’s division of Zondervan).

I was thrilled when they asked for a partner book to help children cope with fears such as separation anxiety and shyness through the day. God is with Me through the Day and God is with Me through the Night were released simultaneously on March 1, 2009.

How did your professional background help you write these books?

Aside from writing articles on the topics of faith, family, and child development for nearly a decade, I am also a certified speech-language pathologist. I’ve spent years helping children of all abilities/disabilities develop their communication skills. This includes not only their speech, but their reading and language skills as well. I was certain that young children preferred books with big pictures, simple text, and repetitive prose. Plus, I knew that most kids love animals.

Still, I conducted extensive research on children’s picture books. I was surprised to read studies that indicated children prefer color photos to illustrations. With real-world reactions from children, data to support the design of the books, and a gut instinct that families would enjoy reading these aloud time and time again, I decided to move forward with publishing. I am excited to share this universal message with children around the world.

How have children reacted to the books?

It’s been amazing to see children’s reactions as I read to school groups and story time groups. They laugh at the funny photos. They say “awww” when there’s a sweet photo. And they show sad expressions when the animals express fear or loneliness. I encourage them to talk to the animals on the pages. “Tell the goat, ‘Don’t be scared. Go play with your friends.’” Or “Silly kitty. That’s just a shadow!” They really interact with the book and always ask me to read it again.

Through the use of realistic, natural photos, the children can understand that all of God’s creatures feel afraid at times. It helps them cope with their emotions so they feel confident to explore their world or sleep through the night.

How have parents reacted to the books?

It’s been wonderful to hear feedback from parents after they’ve bought the books, especially to hear that this is sometimes the first book their child could read independently. As a mother, author, and speech-language pathologist, that’s an amazing compliment.

One of my favorite stories was from the parents of a three-year-old daughter. They emailed me to say they ran to her bedroom door because they had heard her screaming. When they got there, they realized she was yelling, “I am safe! I am loved!” which are phrases used repetitively in both books. Another huge compliment has been to hear that children carry these books around with them in the car or that parents have had to tape the pages back together because the books have been so “loved.”

I am thrilled, honored, and grateful that these stories are reaching so many families. If there’s one thing I want everyone to know, it’s that they’re loved and that they’re never alone. If I can share that message with even one child a day, then I am very blessed.

Zonderkidz, a division of Zondervan Publishing sent me both of these books for review and sent me a copy of each to give away.
