2012 Kia Sorento EX AWD Mid Sized SUV Review

We only had the car for a week, I could have driven the Kia forever. I didn’t want to give it back at the end of my review. I told you all about the divine intervention that happened while I was reviewing the 2012 Kia Sorento EX AWD and I told you that the fabulous SUV inspired me to make a dish with a kick. But I haven’t told you all about how much my family loved the 2012 Kia Sorento.

image

As much as we loved it, I’m going to start off with the one thing that was negative for us. The car seats are not easy to install. The latch system is hard to get to and it’s difficult to push the car seat attachments into it. Not a big deal because once you have them installed you usually leave them in.

image

What we did like…everything else!

I loved the size of the Kia Sorento. The Kia Sorento is smaller than my van so it’s a lot easier for me to park. While I was going into Seattle one day with the kids I had to park in a parking garage and I hate parking garages. They always seem so small and tight and of course I was nervous as all get out being in a car that wasn’t mine but the Kia Sorento maneuvers really well and gave me enough room to park in those tiny spots without worrying about my behind sticking out. Size wise, there isn’t as much storage as our van has. It’s just a smaller vehicle, but all the back seats can go flat. The middle seats don’t go completely flat but if you need to bring something big home you still have a lot of added room with the fold down feature.

image

Heated seats, I love heated seats. My van has heated seats. Plus I just loved the look of the interior. The dash, the doors, the textures, I felt like I was driving a fun car with pizazz and flavor!

image

GPS, Sirius radio, personal climate control and bluetooth phone connections are also three extra good checkmarks in my book. I get lost EVERY time I go to Seattle and when I went to Seattle in the Kia, I had the GPS to get me in and out without a hitch. There’s something about my phone’s GPS that always quits working when I’m lost. So my next vehicle will have built in GPS without a doubt.. I like it hot and my husband likes it cold so having separate controls were awesome. My husband was a little disappointed that the back didn’t have it’s own controls as well and my kids were sad there wasn’t a DVD player. But we loved the radio options. CD, MP3, Sirius, so many preset channels we had plenty to listen to. Oh and I almost forgot all about the back up camera. I didn’t use it much because I have some friends who said they are so used to theirs that it’s hard to drive cars without it. So I spent half my time looking at the camera and the other half looking over my shoulder out of habit. But it’s really a great feature because a little kid could be right behind you and you wouldn’t see them no matter what, but the camera would catch them.

image

The steering wheel has all the controls for the phone, radio, air built into it. Seems like that is becoming more standard too, or at least it’s in my van.

image

image

Keyless start, my husband and I both got used to keeping the key in our pockets in just the one week we were driving the Kia.

image

The dashboard included an ECO light. We found the ECO light on the dashboard to be a little strange. I mean, it’s great to know when the vehicle is in optimal driving conditions but what can we do to maintain that. I guess it just makes drivers more aware of what speed and consistency to strive for when you can, but traffic is traffic at least that’s what we thought.

image

The seats were very comfortable quit adjustable. My husband and I both used the set up to save our seat settings so every time we switched all we had to do was hit button one or button two. The Kia Sorento also has convenient accessory power ports for many different electronic devices. Gone are the days when you need adaptors for all of your devices. It’s been a while since I fully reviewed a car like this, if you remember back I told you my husband is all about the cup holders, well you’ll be happy to know there are plenty of built in cup holders in the 2012 Kia Sorento.

image

I like how the side view mirrors just fold in. We lost one once in a drive by and it would have been great if they would have just folded in instead of what did happen.

image

Overall, I really enjoyed driving the Kia for a week.

Thank you Kia and STI for allowing us to review the Kia Sorento for a week.

Every Toyota Camry Has A Story–The Camry Effect

By Ashley

When I first heard about “The Camry Effect” and how people were telling stories about their cars, I’m not going to lie, I chuckled a little. How could people be so tied to their cars? Then, I thought about it for a minute… and I thought about our car… just happens to be a 2008 Toyota Camry. I started my own little sentimental journey down memory lane. Cars really kind of are symbolic of different stages and times in our lives. Our Camry is no exception.

image

Thomas and I were living the life of a young married couple out on our own in a new place. We commuted together to and from work… every day. We got a dog, moved into a house, then…? Well, obviously! We started talking baby! We knew for us a baby would (among a MILLION other things) mean needing a second car. We talked, and looked, and shopped, and priced (and saved and saved)…

When I was 9 months pregnant, after several weekends of test drives, comparison shopping, and discussions, we walked into one of our local Toyota dealerships. That day, Thomas negotiated and paid for our used (but good as new to us) 2008 Toyota Camry. Bluetooth syncing, sunroof, great speakers, amazing condition, low mileage, automatic everything… and of course the latch system for car seats. We officially had a “fancy car,” a date night car, a car that Thomas said was not for food or drinks or the dog! Ha! 2 years later, that rule has held up!

IMG_6130

Our 2008 Camry was the car that we took on our last fancy “date night” in when I was 2 weeks away from having our son. It was the car that we took to eat dinner the night before I went into the hospital. It was the car we took on our first “date” (a quick trip out for ice cream) after he was born. It’s now the car that our son points to and says “Pop” because he knows that it’s his “Pop’s” car. It’s the car I take out when I go for a mommy night out, and the car we take together when we manage to schedule (after actually finding) a babysitter and go on a date. It’s the car that we will probably end up giving to our son when he gets behind the wheel. That’s thinking a little too far ahead for me though! He’s still my baby… for now.

So, there you have it. I guess I never should have chuckled when I heard that people could “feel” about their cars. Obviously our Camry is important to me. Not even 2 years, and so many memories already. Thanks Toyota.

Photography: A Drive Through St Charles #SuzukiMomFest

As I was test driving the Suzuki Kizashi and other Suzuki vehicles they brought to our Junk in the trunk scavenger hunt, I saw just how beautiful St Charles is. It’s Fall there and the leaves are changing colors and the sun was out. Here in the Pacific Northwest we have green all year round and clouds and rain in the fall. The sun just happens to be out today, but our photos don’t look like this.

St Charles

As I’m still putting together my thoughts on the event itself, which I LOVED, I wanted to share my photography. These shots were taken just from the hotel we stayed at.

From inside the cars I took these shots:

This warranty can be transferred to the next buyer and the next providing excellent resale value. Stay tuned there may be even more to come for now you can see more thoughts on Suzuki’s Kizashi..

Suzuki provided all of my transportation and fees while being away from my family.

Suzuki Junk in the Trunk Scavenger Hunt

A little over a week ago I was a guest with Suzuki Auto! Yes they make fantastic cars among other things. One of them being the world’s fastest motorcycle, but more about that later. For now let’s focus on how much fun their new Kizashi is to drive. It’s so much fun to drive. The inside feels sporty and I drove a standard. I love shifting gears, of course if you ask my driving partner how my driving was I’m sure she would remind me that I stalled out twice before I got the hang of it again. It was almost 3 years since I last drove one.

image

The Kizashi features 8 standard air bags, front seat side impact supplemental airbags, read seat side impact supplemental airbags and side curtain supplemental airbags. Also the car has touch free smart key keyless entry and start system and I know that’s not new to most of you but I found it to be fascinating. I never tried a button start up before. One thing my family loves is that everyone has their own climate control, and the Kizashi has dual zone automatic climate control with rear passenger air vents.

image

So one of the things we did with Suzuki is we had to drive through the country side to find Target and then we had a shopping scavenger hunt inside Target. The drive was a very nice drive. St. Charles is a beautiful city rated #1 Best town for families. I have much more to share with you about this wonderful event.

The Junk in the Trunk! Everything fit in the Kizashi’s trunk, this is two sets of scavenger hunt finds. Plus there is plenty of room to spare.

Everything was purchased at Target and you *should* be able to exchange everything for the correct size and color choices.

Choosing a Car is difficult

I have no idea how to choose a car except by test driving them and when you look young like my husband and I do they don’t think you can afford one in the first place. So what are the ways you can search out a car on-line?

2009 Toyota SiennaThe Car Connection seems to have some options for finding out information about vehicles. Take for instance the toyota sienna. This is one of the vans that my husband and I are considering as the next family vehicles we purchase. Toyota’s have great re-sale value.

I will not consider the dodge journey because we currently have a dodge caravan and I hate it. I absolutely hate it.  but since I’m looking at cars at the moment I thought I might check out the Pontiac g8 and Hyundai. People are saying that the Hyundai is improving.  It looks like the information on the car connection is unbiased and factual. Each person that goes and places their opinion they aren’t paid opinions so it’s nice to see what other people think about each vehicle.

My Weekend with #Ford Fusion Hybrid

IMG_9798

Ford is a smart company because before they let me test drive one over the weekend I never had any intention of buying another American Made Vehicle. However, Ford has managed to make a vehicle in a medium price range feel like a luxury vehicle. Ford knows moms.

IMG_9807We were not given a vehicle with all of the upgrades either, it was modest, it had Sync, Syrius, and a 6 disc CD player. I loaded it up and tested out all of the technology in the car. My husband plugged in our Zune, we used the built in phone capabilities with our phone. So I was calling all my friends and family by using verbal commands. The Sync system is awesome.

IMG_9805I have never driven a hybrid before so I had no idea what to expect. I turned the key and there was no sound. The lights on the dash came on but that’s it. I was thinking I didn’t turn the car on so I turned the key again. It was still silent. I wasn’t sure what to do. I took the car out of park and we started moving, I guess the car is on I thought to myself.  Wow it was scary but really cool at the same time. Every time I stopped at a light or stop sign I still felt like the car was not on.  The dashboard was quite distracting at times. All the digital displays. You can see how much power the battery has, how much gas you have, how many miles you have gone what you are getting in miles per gallon and your average miles per gallon. The display is customizable which is a good thing because I would not want my teenager driving with all of that going on. Maybe when they start driving they’ll be used to that much going on at once. We’ll just have to see when that day comes. I’m not looking forward to that day. I know that computers have been running cars for quite a few years now so I’m quite comfortable with all the features it has.

IMG_9799

The interior is very nice. I love new vehicles. They are so much fun to drive and the Ford Fusion Hybrid is fun to drive. Compared to my Doge Caravan that I have been toting my children in this thing felt like driving a sports car. I felt like it corners really well. My husband even thought it cornered really well and he drives a Toyota Corolla every day.

He complained that the engine didn’t seem too powerful but for a hybrid it was alright. I thought the engine performance was great, but again, my frame of reference is a Dodge Caravan. IMG_9806

We were able to sit in it comfortably as a family. It was quite roomy. My husband had plenty of feet room without making the kids feel like they didn’t have any room. Sometimes it just doesn’t feel like cars were made for car seats. We use the latch system with ours and it was extremely easy to install.

IMG_9796

I could see our family taking a long trip in the Ford Fusion Hybrid. It does get better gas mileage in town though which is opposite of most vehicles. In extreme driving situations it gets 81 miles per gallon. I forgot to write down what our average was, but it was really fun to watch the meter when it said we were getting 60+ miles per gallon.

The true test would be to see how the Ford Fusion Hybrid stands the length of time.
