At the Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 Press Junket our first interview was one of the best ones of the day. We interviewed Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn who play Yondu and Kraglin. We decided to share it today instead of last week because we wanted to give our readers a chance to see the movie before we spoil the ending with this amazing interview.
I’m wondering if I should just spill now or save it for the end of the interview? Hmmm, yep. I’ll make you wait.
First up, let’s talk about makeup…
Michael: Yeah, the makeup process is awesome. It took about, three hours to put on four or five, six layers of different shades of blue and gold and silver and yellow, flax and all kinds of stuff. I would ask, ‘what color is this?’ They’d say, ‘It’s gold’! Sometimes they just flick it on with a brush. You know, they put it on the brush and they just go and they just flick it. It’s like a little spackling all over your face, but tiny little dots that helps to bring out the depth of the paint so it looks like, it just looks like real skin. It feels like real skin too.
CHECK OUT THIS FEATURE ON YONDU:
Sean: What these guys go through with makeup and stuff is amazing. You hear Rooker talk about having hours worth of makeup and it’s really impressive. He never complains and, and so it’s not just going through the makeup process. It’s then also being ready to go and ready to perform and focus and so, what, what he and Dave and Karen and Zoe go through every day is just so intense. I was glad he let me play a humanoid character in this movie.
Check out this feature of Kraglin:
Now how about those UGLY teeth they have to wear. Look at these guys, they both have amazing teeth…
Sean: The teeth can be tricky. I tried to get the teeth made several months before we started filming so that I could just put them in and work with the talking. I think talking through the teeth in the first movie was one of the most difficult things.
Michael: I didn’t have a problem with it because everybody’s different. Sean can speak English. I cannot. Sean uses consonants, I do not, almost never, and my quality is more throatal and glottal. His is not. This is just my quality in that’s how I speak, so thereby, the teeth are up in the front, so I form my words and my consonants and sounds more back (in the throat), so it didn’t bother me at all with the speaking. What it did do was make it more difficult to whistle. A whistle’s all in the front, right where the stupid teeth are. I told them, ‘We got to fix these because I got to whistle.’ and so they did. They did pretty good and I had to relearn a little bit of where I focus the sound for the whistling and stuff.
And Michael said that it is his whistle and before he left the interview he gave us a nice long very loud whistle. Yes this guy and belt out a whistle.
Now into a few Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 2 spoiler type things…
Rocket has a major chip on his shoulder in this movie. And we find out that Yondu has a soft spot. They end up working together in this movie and we feel for both characters. So to me it wasn’t that much of a surprise when Michael Rooker revealed that Rocket is is favorite character.
Rocket is my friend right here (he patted Sean on the back) and we worked together day and night doing this. During filming, he does all the vocals and all the voice stuff for Rocket.

And Sean clarified.
Sean: We have to do several takes for anything that Rocket is a part of. We do a reference take, we’re in there and we make sure we get one or two good ones of those, and then we have to do one with, like a light when I’m doing lines from just behind the camera. Got to do one that’s totally empty.
Another Spoiler Type item is Yondu dies in this movie. I cried when Yondu died because he sacrificed himself for Star-Lord. Yondu is more of a dad to him than Ego ever would have been. When Michael was asked to talk about this a bit he said….
I’ll be back
He quickly recovered by saying you know in “other movies”. But if you go to IMDB which you can’t trust as actual fact of course but he is slated to be in the next Avenger movie as are more of the Guardians of the Galaxy so maybe it was so no one would know his character died but I’m skeptical. Only time will tell for sure!
