Last month, I was invited to return to Kissimmee, Florida for another fun adventure. I’m always excited to visit Kissimmee, but East coast flights definitely take a lot out of you. In the past, a flight out of PDX to Orlando International Airport always involved a layover, making a long cross-country trip even longer and adding the uncertainty of cancelled flights to the mix. I’ve run all the way across an airport in order to make a connecting flight in the past, and I was so sweaty and out of breath by the time I reached my gate that one of the other passengers thought I might be having some kind of health issue. But I made my flight!
Anything that can make a long trip shorter and easier is always welcome news to frequent travelers like me – and for families planning a fun vacation, it’s priceless to arrive at your destination less stressed. Being more rested gives you more energy and enjoyment of your holiday, with less crankiness for everybody. This is why I was thrilled to learn that Alaska Airlines are now offering the first and only nonstop flights between Portland and Orlando!
I got aboard one of the inaugural flights on March 21st with my travel buddies Jana and Carol to begin my second Kissimmee trip. Jana has traveled Alaska so often that she has frequent flier perks that allowed us to relax in the Alaska lounge before our flight. Usually, I’m hunting for an electrical outlet at my gate before I board a flight – this time, I was sipping complimentary mimosas with friends. My trip was already off to an amazing start!
Having a direct flight made such a difference, especially since our trip was brief and packed with physical activities. The last time I flew home from Kissimmee, I had a stopover in Dallas that got delayed because of lightning on the tarmac! Being able to fly straight home with no stops allowed us to arrive sans lightning at the PDX airport at 7:30 PM. The early arrival is especially appreciated by me, since living in Seaside means an additional 2 hour drive home after landing. I was able to get home and sit on my own couch before 10 PM, allowing me to get a full night of sleep and recover from the jetlag faster. If you’re planning a Florida vacation this summer, Alaska Airlines is the way to go!
