Guest Post: The Lowell Milken Center Discovery Award Unsung Heroes

I’m always excited when I hear about new initiatives in our schools. My daughters’ education is a top priority for me and I monitor the new developments in our nation’s schools carefully to see what I and our schools could be doing.

That’s why I was excited to read about the Lowell Milken Center Discovery Award whose aim is to explore unsung heroes. The award is a unique opportunity to engage our kids in an educational project that allows them to pursue a subject that interests them as they conduct research about the subject and join a community which is involved in educating themselves and others about unrecognized heroes. The project joins children, parents and educators from around the nation who support each other’s efforts while developing quality materials and building their own learning skills.

Students from fourth through twelfth grades are eligible to participate in the project. Each student selects an individual whose actions have impacted society over a span of time as well as, in some way, changed the course of history. Each project must involve original research with supporting primary sources and a bibliography. The Lowell Milken Center expects that each project will offer sustaining value to society. Projects must include examples of the hero’s actions that establish the reasons that the hero
serves as a role model.

The 2012 project deadline has passed for topic approval but I hope that increasing numbers of students, including kids from my own community, will get involved in the future. Students can submit their project as an exhibit, a website, a performance or as a documentary film which offers the students plenty of opportunities to showcase their creativity. In addition, projects may be submitted by students working as a group(five or fewer students) which increases cooperation skills and provides heightened opportunities for inspiration and inventiveness.

Lowell Milken, founder of the Center is offering significant cash prizes which, I believe, indicates to the kids that their work is
valued.

Healthy Living Through The Walmart Foundation

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walmart for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I try very hard to be all about healthy living in our household, I try. We still have a lot of improvement needed in our house. We eat a lot of vegetables and fruit but we aren’t the most active family out there. I’d love it if it didn’t rain so much here and if the average temperature was a little warmer. But since I can’t change the climate and we’re not going to move I need to make do with what I have. We need to come up with a family exercise program. Currently we use the Xbox Kinect as our exercise program and I have to admit it is a lot of fun.

Walmart’s Healthy Living initiative aims to help families like mine. They are giving 9.5 Million in grants to help organizations that are helping families to have healthy nutritional eating habits. Through these organizations like Share Our Strength, the National 4-H Council and Action for Healthy Kids, the Walmart Foundation plans to reach nearly 300,000 people across the nation: They are going to teach families how to eat healthy on a budget, give cooking demonstrations and teach them how to make healthy choices. You know, Share Our Strength is one of my favorite programs I’m so glad that Walmart will be working with them. They plan to provide $4 million for grocery store tours to 7,500 participants through Shopping Matters which helps low-income families learn how to shop healthy on a budget.  Be sure to check out the Walmart healthy living Program yourself for a full list of organizations they are helping and all the amazing things they are doing.

Walmart has recruited Rovenia M. Brock Ph. D.. Rovenia is known for providing a unique brand of inspiration, nutrition education, and health advice to help Americans develop better, more nutritious eating habits. She’s going to be a major help empowering communities learn about healthy living.

Walgreens Prescription Savings Club

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

My family is very fortunate with our current insurance plan we have practically no out of pocket which is unheard of for most Americans. Right now I can go to any pharmacy I want to and it’s the same cost to me. I do remember one year when we were told that our pharmacies no longer accepted our insurance and it was odd because we were so used to every taking it. But no, not all pharmacies are alike, just like insurance companies.

Next year we’re going to go through some changes and although I think they will have little affect on where we can go, knowing pharmacy policies will help us make the decision on where to go to get our prescription filled. Walgreens was in negotiations with Express Scripts to keep the prescription cost to consumers down (Walgreens and Express Script), however negotiations failed and Walgreens decided to drop Express Scripts. This decision wasn’t taken lightly and they tried many different ways to stay with Express Scripts. Military families are going to be strongly affected by this as many of them have to use Express Scripts through their military insurance company Tricare. Walgreens tried to create a contract just for the military families but even these negotiations failed.

For now this has no affect on someone like me and probably won’t affect me in the future either. I’ve never been part of the Express Scripts network, if I have a maintenance medication I have to send it through my insurance anyway not the pharmacy and when I was a kid I remember my dad’s insurance being the same way. I had no idea there were such programs like Express Scripts. Actually, that’s not true it sounds like Medco who is what we have to use for all of our maintenance medications. We don’t even have the option of getting them through a pharmacy. I do hate having to go through a middle man to get my medicine. It’s a pain in the rear, so I understand why Walgreens can’t work with them anymore and I feel bad for those affected.

There is a benefit with Walgreens choosing to create the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club though. By spending only $10 a year, a family membership will cover everyone in the immediate family. This includes a spouse, dependents 22 years and younger and pets. WOW! PETS!. Individuals may also join for $5. Join and receive discount prices on your prescriptions and savings on more than 8,000 brand-name and all generic medications. You will also receive discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and diabetic supplies. Even more bonuses occur when you purchase Walgreens brand products and photo finishing services. Be sure to follow Walgreens on Twitter and Walgreens on Facebook to stay up to date on their policies and promotions.

Gluten Free Emergency Food

Two posts in one day about emergency supplies and food options and you might think I’m a crazy person that thinks the world is coming to an end. Well rest assured I’m not worried about the end times. I am a little more worried about possible winter storms and not having electricity for a week or two. When I was pregnant with Zoe we had a huge wind storm, it rained before the wind storm so the ground was really wet. Trees came down left and right and we lived in the middle of a forest it was terribly frightening. At the end of the storm the weather turned really cold. We were cold and without power for seven days. We didn’t have much of an emergency kit at that time. I ate lots of peanut butter and beef jerky, I actually got tired of peanut butter but didn’t have anything else to eat. It didn’t help to go into town because everyone was without power and waiting in line to get gas at a gas station that happened to have power took over an hour. Sigh! So I like to remind people to be prepared.

Now what if you have special dietary needs? You still need to eat right? I have friends that have to eat gluten free and friends that choose to eat gluten free. So when I say that BuyEmergencyFoods.com had gluten free options I wanted to list a few of those options here. At Buy Emergency Foods you can find Gluten Free Oatmeal with Brown Sugar, Gluten Free Corn Chowder and Gluten Free Cheesy Potato Soup. When you’re looking for emergency food for your survival kit BuyEmergencyFoods includes options for those with special needs.

How Hungry Would You Be To Eat Freeze Dried Meat?

My husband and I are always talking about our emergency kit and what it needs to have in it. You’re supposed to have a backpack ready to go with everything you need to survive for three days and be able to run with it for three miles or something like that. I heard it on the radio a while back. Well, we’re not that prepared, not in the slightest but we do have an emergency kit with a few things in it like battery packs and flashlights, blankets and some food but not enough. So about a month ago we were talking about getting some more food and on the shelf in front of me at the grocery store was the largest container of Freeze Dried meat and onions and milk I had ever seen. It was in my opinion disgusting but what if? What if that’s all we had to eat? I sometimes wonder how long it would take me to get myself to eat that stuff.

Since we’re on-line looking at options and it’s the winter season an all I thought I’d share a website that has a few more appealing freeze dried options. PrepareWise has long term storage options for food and a cool calculator so you can determine how much food you would need along with some product options you can buy directly from them. Prepare Wise also has some basic survival kits that include bandages, toothpaste and other things you need besides food.

So before you lose electricity for a week or face some other natural disaster check out PrepareWise.com.

Ford’s Top 10 Safe Winter Driving Do’s and Don’ts

With the holidays coming up it’s important to remember to drive extra safely. You might be in your right mind but it doesn’t mean that all the other drivers on the road are. DON’T lose track of how many eggnogs you consumed at the holiday party. The most important holiday safe driving tip of all is to refrain from drinking and driving under all circumstances. If you think you will drink, arrange for alternate transportation ahead of time. Ford has announced a Top 10 list of Winter Safety Driving Tips to help you stay safe and count down to the New Year!

10. DO allow a few minutes to brush and scrape your vehicle. Clearing windows is crucial for visibility and removing snow or ice from the top of your car will spare cars behind you from encountering an unexpected snow assault, impairing visibility or even cracking a windshield.

DON’T forget to clean snow and ice off your headlights and taillights as well.

9. DO use winterized windshield wiper fluid to make sure your wiper sprayer doesn’t freeze over or crack, preventing you from washing away dirt and salt.

DON’T try to melt ice from your windshield by pouring hot water on it. Using hot water can crack the windshield.

8. DO wash your car regularly to remove salt and dirt from the roadways.

DON’T let road grime prematurely age the body of your vehicle by neglecting to bathe it.

7. DO maintain at least half a tank of gas to prevent unnecessarily stranding yourself in adverse conditions. To help get the most out of your tank, Ford offers fuel-saving technologies such as its EcoBoost® engines, electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) and hybrid electric vehicles.

DON’T forget to check that all fluids are at proper levels and ensure all tires, including the spare, have the required pressure and tread.

6. DO prepare your car for an emergency. Essential items to keep in the trunk are a blanket to stay warm, proper attire (boots, jacket, hat and gloves) in case you have to be outside for an extended period of time, a shovel, flashlight with fresh batteries and snacks. Keep your cell phone charged to call help if necessary.

DON’T forget the kitty litter or sand, which can be used to provide added traction if your car becomes stuck in the snow.

5. DO remain aware of what’s around you on the road, including checking your blind spots and keeping an eye out for pedestrians or lost reindeer from Santa’s sleigh.

DON’T follow too closely. The general rule is the vehicle ahead should pass a road marker two seconds before you. In slippery conditions, it is recommended to double the amount of space between you and the vehicle in front.

4. DO apply even pressure when braking in slick conditions if your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes. Keep in mind anti-lock brakes do not shorten stopping distance, but they do help you maintain control.

DON’T become overconfident in snowy and slippery road conditions. Always test road conditions with cautious driving when the surface area is wet or icy, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

3. DO turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide when driving on snowy or icy roads until you gain control.

DON’T apply power or change directions suddenly on snow or ice.

2. DO stay calm if you find yourself stuck in the snow or broken down on the side of the road in adverse conditions.

DON’T leave your car unless available shelter is close by. If you need to run the engine to stay warm, make sure the exhaust pipe isn’t clogged with snow so the interior stays clear of harmful carbon monoxide.

1. DO make sure you are awake and alert behind the wheel. If necessary, take a break and grab a coffee.
