No mother ever wants to hear her child say “mom I have lice” or even worse and yes this has happened to me…..”Mom, I think I have lice because I just pulled a bug out of my hair.” Yep this happened to my son recently (I did look at his head when he first complained but I couldn’t find any on his head. The nits were the same color as his hair and difficult to find) and I moved quickly in the direction of getting RID of them.
With the kids back to school after the holidays, and more of our little ones wearing winter hats and scarves, it’s really important to keep lice top of mind so they don’t get on top of their head.
Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that live on the human scalp. They are about as big as sesame seeds and can be seen without magnification. However, lice eggs are about the size of poppy seeds and are difficult to see because their color easily blends in with the infested child’s hair. I had to Google all this and check out photos to make sure that what he pulled from his hair was indeed lice. And of course it was. Lice sustain themselves by sucking blood—just as mosquitoes do. I decided at this moment to go ahead and treat everyone in the house. I also decided to vacuum, wash all the sheets, blankets and pillow cases. We used the RID Home Lice, Bedbug and Dust Mite spray according to package directions to kill lice and the eggs on mattresses, furniture, car interiors and other nonwashable items (be sure to read product label for full instructions- the RID Home Spray is not for human use). I was being extra cautious. You might not know this but lice don’t jump from head to head. You have to actually share a hairbrush or something personal. Lice typically moves from one head to another if the infestation is severe.
RID is America’s #1 lice treatment brand and not only do they offer a full line of products for treatment of lice but also comprehensive, 24/7 support services including simple step-by-step instructions and How-To videos and specially trained experts at the dedicated 1-800-RID-LICE hotline. How To Prevent Lice as your Kids Go Back TO School
· Make sure you teach your kids not to share hairbrushes, combs, hair accessories headgear (e.g., hats, headphones, etc.), or other personal items.
· Don’t worry about hygiene because it doesn’t play a part in getting lice.
· With the return to school, it’s important to look out for the most common symptom of lice infestation, which is itching.
