Sunday Savings – 10 Ways To Save Money Long Term and Short Term

Here are 10 ways to save money:

1) Change your attitude. The only way you are going to start saving money is if you look at your budget and cut back. You have to realize that your lifestyle might need to change in order to get spending under control. It is obvious that Americans are used to our standard of living. My grandmother said that people can live on a whole lot less. She remembers times when people struggled to put food on the table, now we think we are struggling when we can’t buy the newest iphone, or technical gadget of your choice.

2) Have a savings account and make sure that your money is compounding. Making sure that your money is making money is one key way to saving money. Right before I went to college, I scourged up 1000.00 to put into a CD. I gained a lot of interest and over the four years in college I was able to save, compound my savings and turn that 1000.00 into 10,000. Talk to your bank and find out what the best way to invest your savings is for you.

3) Make goals for managing your money. Creating a budget was the best thing my husband and I did. We sat down and we created the worst case scenario budget and found out what he had to cut to make sure that even if I didn’t clip coupons, or buy things that were on sale we could afford to feed our family, have some fun money, and save for trips to visit family. Even short term goals can help you save up for long term. Save up for the new appliance you know you are going to need. Plan for car expenses. Make sure you are thinking about emergencies.

4) Understand that all the spending you do now affects your retirement. If you want to live the way you do now, you need to put aside enough to live off of when you retire. planning for retirement is smart. Track all of your expenses. Knowing where you money is going will help you cut and save. Use a spreadsheet.

5) Do not neglect the necessities or deprive yourself. Do not give up life insurance, car insurance, or insurance of any kind to save money. If you make a super budget and do not allow yourself to get treats every now and then you will fail. It’s just like with eating on a diet, cutting out all the things you like will make your gorge when you have the chance. Don’t set yourself up for failure. Putting enough aside for small luxuries is smart.

6) Downsizing your vehicles can help you to save money. The cost of gas is lower that it was, but it might go back up or reach an even newer high. By going down to one vehicle or getting a more fuel efficient car you can save money. We went down to one new vehicle, saving money on gas, and car insurance. My husband takes the bus to work every day saving us on car maintenance, gas, and the cost of insuring two vehicles.

7) I have read that by turning off all the lights if you aren’t using them really can help you save money. Keeping electricity off will lower your energy usage. Consider keeping the thermostat lower in the winter and higher in the summer. Also, replacing your appliance to be more energy efficient will save you money. You can usually find rebates for the purchase and it’s a tax write off (make sure to read all the details to see if you qualify for energy saving appliance purchases). There are also rebates around on new energy saving bulbs. Some electricity programs even handed out energy saving bulbs last year.

8) Cutting out fast food and coffee shops will save you a bundle. This one is so hard for me because when I’m out running around with the kids I just want to stop at those golden arches and feed the kids a quick meal. One, it’s not healthy and two it’s expensive. I’m also addicted to lattes and mochas.

9) Find ways to do things free. Instead of paying for a gym membership find an exercise partner and work out at home, at the mall, or at a park. There are ways to exercise no matter what the weather is that do not cost any money. Don’t pay for cable when you can get all the TV you want on the Internet. There are TV channels such as hulu, fancast, and the tv networks themselves allow you to watch from their websites. There are plenty of ways to find free entertainment as well. There are concerts at parks and lots of museums have days that you can come in for free. Sometimes it’s hard to find this information but it is out there.

10) Visualize how much your favorite snack or treat costs on a yearly basis. When you see how much something costs on a yearly basis it can be astounding. Take for example the weekly expense of 10.00 for coffee. That’s two a week, it becomes 2500 in a year. Another reason whey it’s important to track all of your expenses.

Now, if only I can always follow my own advice. ;-)

Mom Start Saving Guest Post: Elizabeth Cutten, My Ultimate Guide to Finding Coupons

This is a guest post brought to you by Elizabeth Cutten. she helps write, and manage Find Cash Backwards, a blog that showcases the best ways to find coupons, and more.

My Ultimate Guide to Finding Coupons

From an early age, when I grew up with my parents, I always knew that it was wrong to purchase things at full price. Since I saw my Mom, and Dad use coupons on EVERYTHING, I knew it was just silly to go purchase something for full price, because I knew I could get a great deal. Today, I want to show you how you can save more than 10-20% on your purchase every time. Let me walk you step by step on how you should purchase something online.

Get the right price: Before you even start shopping, you should know what you have in mind. Don’t just head to a store for the fun of it, and purchase. Instead, you’ll want to find the best price possible on that product. You’ll want to use something such as PriceGrabber.com that will find the best price across the board. Use this to your advantage.

Have a cash back account: If you’re not earning cash back on your purchases, you’ll want to start doing this immediately. You can sign up with companies such as Ebates.com, FatWallet, or my personal favorite, Bank of America’s AdditUp. AdditUp is my favorite because they put the cash back savings right into your savings account, and they also offer some of the best rates possible in terms of cash back.

What is a cash back account?

Let me touch on this really quick. Let’s say that you wanted to purchase something from Sears. What you’ll do is log into your account, look for sears, and see how much you’re going to get back. With Bank of America, I would get 6% of my purchase back. I’ll click on the link, and do my shopping.

Browse for coupon codes: Coupons are everywhere, and no matter what you’re buying, you’re going to be able to save. Before you ever buy something online, make sure you always look for coupon codes. A simple Google search, such as “(company name) coupon codes” will suffice. When you do this search though, make sure you look at the recent results on Google, to ensure that you get fresh results.

Buy your coupons: If you’re extremely patient like me, you can buy your coupons. This sounds silly, doesn’t it? Let me explain though. You’re going to want to head to eBay, and search for coupons. I’ve searched for everything, and anything, and there’s always a coupon! Bid on it, but make sure you’re not paying too much, and wait for it to arrive.

Get a cash back credit card: Credit cards aren’t evil. You can save money with them, especially if you have a rewards card. For example, my Chase card will give me 1%-3% back on my purchases. As long as you pay your bill off in full, you can take full advantage. Make sure that you make your purchases with a card like this at the checkout. If you want, you can always bill pay the card right away, so that you don’t forget.

How I saved just the other day…

My nephew the other day wanted some clothes from American Eagle. Since I couldn’t really do the PriceGrabber.com thing, I was able to still get a great deal. First off, I bought him 2 pairs of jeans. They were both marked at $39.50, for a total of $79. I headed off to eBay, bought a $50 gift card for $47.50, with free shipping. I then was able to find a 15% off my purchase, with free shipping. After the 15% was applied, it brought my total down to $67.15. I already saved $2.50 with the gift card.

    Here’s how it breaks down…

    · $79 x 15% off = $67.15

    · $50 gift card for $47.50 off eBay = $2.50 savings

    · $67.15 – 4% with Bank of America ($2.69) = $64.46

    · $64.46 – $2.50 (gift card savings) = $61.96

Now, if I wouldn’t have done this, I would have paid $79, plus shipping, which would have brought my purchase to $80+. As you can see, with some patience, and research, I was able to save $20+ off 2 pairs of jeans. I’m hoping this guide works for you, and I’m hoping that you can save big bucks as well. Good luck!

Save Money with My Parent Rewards Cyber Monday Deals and #giveaway

Myparentrewards My Parent Rewards are cards that you can purchase to save money on your regular expenses. It is similar to the Entertainment Book in that you can use it in places that are local to you. You purchase the card and then you register it and then you show it to the retailers that have signed up to use it.

First, you need to go sign up for a free one, well it’s 3.00. You need to pay for shipping and handling. However, what a steal, 20.00 verses 3.00. You’ll pay for it the first time you use it.

My Parent rewards is celebrating Cyber Monday by GIVING AWAY 10,000 FREE My Parent Rewards Cards!

Get yours,  the first 10,000 people to go to www.MyParentRewards.com/cybermonday (not MyParentRewards.com – ensure you go to the /cybermonday link) and click on "Buy a Card" will receive the card for FREE!!

To buy multiple cards, call them at 1.888.994.3589 ext. 2. Makes for a great Christmas stocking stuffer!

Second, My Parent Rewards sent me a card to review. The problem about the card is that you have to have it on you to use it. I mean, coupons are the same way you have to have them with you to use them. I went to Arby’s tonight and now that I’m home and looking at the site, I’m thinking good grief, I could have saved 5.00. Use the card four or five times and you’ve paid for the card. Options After looking at all of the options for the discounts they seem to be pretty good. You can save 20 percent at some stores and 10 percent on others. Some offers offer you a free item with purchase and others offer you half off with purchase. You can print coupons from their site, but I would still print them from Mypoints because I get points for all of the coupons printed. You can also shop on-line from their site and they have coupon codes listed. It’s a great place to “save everyday” at one single location.

    Examples of locations included.

McDonalds, Subway, Arby’s, Quiznos, Dunkin’ Donuts, Burger King, Domino’s Pizza, El Pollo Loco, Marble Slab, Baskin Robbins, Cinnabon, Little Caesars, Sears, Ann Taylor, and many more, you can get a small preview on-line by entering your zipc ode.

If you were not able to sign up for a free card or don’t want to pay for shipping and handling. You can enter to win one.

    To Enter:

Visit Parent Rewards and tell me what location you will use your card first.

It’s the answer our users are looking for, too, since searches for coupons on Ask.com have shot up almost 50 percent in 2009,” said Scott Garell, President, Ask Networks. “Ask Deals saves consumers time and money through relevant, high-quality savings built right into our unique Ask search results page. By introducing our ‘search stimulus package’ with Ask Deals, we aim to lift a burden for consumers and make a meaningful impact in their lives.”

    Unique features of Ask Deals:

    · The Web’s best deals – in one place: Ask Deals aggregates more than 1 million high-quality savings offers on the Web for hundreds of product categories and rolls them into one, easy-to-read display.

    · Easy-to-find deals, front-and-center: Ask.com saves users time by blending deals into the search results page, making them easy to find via “Smart Answers” with yellow savings arrows at the top of the page, as well as green money-saving icons within the search results.

    · Money-saving related searches. Consumers can easily find additional great discounts by clicking on “money saving searches,” built with Ask.com’s award-winning Zoom Related Search™, which appears at the top of the right side of the search results page.

    · Easy sharing. Consumers can share coupons and deals with friends and family through email and popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Digg.

    · Deal of the Day. When consumers choose an Ask Deals homepage skin, they’ll get daily “can’t miss” savings offers, chosen by the Ask Deals editorial team, streamed right onto their Ask.com homepage. Users can also sign-up for “Deal of the Day” emails to receive new and timely deals every day.

Looking around, I found some great deals on a Sony Vaio, just not the one my husband needs. In addition to Deal of the Day and the Top deals you can also find printable coupons. Right now they have 5.00 off 25 at Toys R Us. This takes you into a forum on slick deals which is another great way to find deals on the internet, but I think ask organizes them and makes them easier to find with their powerful search engine.

Mom Start Saving: Get points for printing coupons at MyPoints

    MyPoints

Another way I save money and earn money at the same time is by printing my coupons at MyPoints. MyPoints is a site where you can earn points in quite a few different ways. Points can then be redeemed for gift cards at quite a few different locations. There really are 1000 of places to get gift cards from and you get all the great deals e-mailed to your inbox.

One, I am a buzz agent and I get free products in exchange for sharing buzz about the products. Then when I go back and fill out a report about all the buzz I shared I get 50 points for every time and then it is transferred to MyPoints.

    BzzAgent Badge

Two, I get e-mails every day about three a day and for each click I get 5 points so that’s about 15 points a day. Sometimes I get more and sometimes I get less. Most of the time though I only click all of them on Sunday. I have a hard time getting through my e-mail because of my blog so MyPoints e-mails sometimes just get deleted.

They also send out surveys which would be number three for me but I get way to busy with everything in my life so I hardly ever do the surveys. You can do the profile surveys and get points that way too.

They also have a referral point system but I can’t ever remember my referral id so I hardly get points that way.

So thirdly for me. I get points for printing coupons and then I get points for redeeming them too. It’s nice that you get points for both.

Fourthly, I earn points by making purchases. I purchase entertainment books through mypoints and other things from time to time. I’m currently working towards a 50.00 Amazon.com gift card.

Points can also be earned by downloading their search bar and doing searches every month but I think it slows down my browser more than I like so I don’t use it. It is the fastest way other than making purchases to earn points on my points though.

I just noticed tonight that they have the frogpond at MyPoints. By visiting a certain site that they provide then coming back to my points and filling out a survey and sharing your opinion you can earn 25 points.

Now so you have an idea about how much points are worth.

    1.00 = 140 points roughly
