So What should you do?

10 Tips to Save Energy TodayEasy low-cost and no-cost ways to save energy and money.

3. Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle.

4. Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.

Live Clean Baby Collection Exclusively at Walgreens

I never really considered Walgreens to be the place to go for an eco conscience product, but low and behold they have exclusivity with Live Clean Baby.

Live Clean is a Canadian brand with eco-friendly personal care products with quite a positive reputation there and now is making it’s way to the US with the launch of Live Clean Baby. This simple, environmentally aware collection of products is specially formulated with both mother’s concerns and baby’s sensitivities in mind.

With most eco friendly products the price tag is a little bit higher than you would normally consider for a Tearless Shampoo and Wash that gently cleanses baby’s hair and scalp without drying; a Moisturizing Baby Bath that gently cleanses and moisturizes baby’s delicate skin, a Moisturizing Baby Lotion that leaves baby’s skin soft and smooth with a non-greasy feel; a Non-Petroleum Jelly and a Diaper Ointment that soothes baby’s tender skin and forms a protective barrier against wetness; and a Moisturizing Bar Soap that is enriched with Shea butter to gently moisturize baby’s skin. The price is $7.99

If you’re looking for vegan products then Live Clean Baby is for you. Using only natural, non-irritating, supremely gentle plant based ingredients, Live Clean Baby performs efficiently and gently to keep baby looking, feeling – and smelling – their very best. “The criteria we’ve developed for the Live Clean brand begins with an ecologically responsible point of view,” says Executive Vice President, Michelle Sparrock, referring to the common, eco-damaging ingredients you won’t find in Live Clean. “As resilient as babies are, we know that their developing systems are also extremely sensitive. We wanted to create baby products with nothing extraneous, nothing unnecessary. Everything from the natural surfactants to the fragrance is both minimal and mild.” They use no animal ingredients in the formulations. The collection is also cruelty-free meaning none of the products or their ingredients have been tested on animals. In its sensitivity to the environment, Live Clean is also free of phosphates, known contributors to water pollution. Plus their packaging has been carefully created to be as earth-friendly as possible. The Live Clean containers are recyclable; they are made from “virgin” materials, making them far easier to recycle than many plastics. Shipping cartons are made from recycled materials and even the inks used on shipping cartons are safe for the environment. Local vendors are used to the maximum which cuts down on gas consumption and emissions thus reducing their overall carbon footprint.

It is available exclusively at Walgreens, the nation’s largest drugstore chain with more than 8,000 stores across the country as well as online at Walgreens.com.

Top 10 Eco and Wallet-Friendly School Year Tips

I’ve been working with Recyclebank for the last two months and I wanted to share this exciting eco friendly tip list with you. Recyclebank went through more than 100,000 submissions to date and compiled the best eco- and wallet-friendly advice from members across the country. The most common themes? Get your family involved, and make it fun! Here are some highlights: image

1. Swap it out. Hold a clothing and school gear swap party with other families in the neighborhood. It’s a great way for the kids to get “new” clothes and backpacks without hurting the planet, plus it saves money. Another great tip was to visit trading sites like ThredUP.com to swap clothes your kids no longer wear for newer duds.

2. Throw a closet-cleaning party. Clean out closets before going shopping to see what fits, what can be repurposed or what can be donated. Make it a fun activity for the whole family to do together—turn on some music, serve some snacks and have a fashion show!

3. Put a new twist on something old. Pull out your sewing machine, material stockpile and accessories to re-invent hand-me-downs. It’s a fun and creative activity for the family, saves money and encourages the kids to enjoy recycled clothing.

4. Extend the life of your crayons. Take crayons from the previous school year, melt them and pour them into molds to create different shaped crayons. Once cooled, you have cool “new” crayons.

5. Save on textbooks and conserve paper. Buy used text books from students who were previously in your kids’ grades. College students can use textbook renting sites such as Chegg.com, which even plants a tree for each book rented. And if you buy a textbook on Amazon.com, you can sell them back for gift cards to use towards next year’s books!

6. Plan a supply hunt. Organize a pen, pencil and notebook scavenger hunt around the house—you’d be amazed what you can find in drawers and bags. It’s a fun rainy day project for kids, and a great way to reuse the supplies you’ve already bought.

7. Give supplies a facelift. You can add some flair to old school supplies that are still useable. Fill an old binder with un-used pages from cast-off notebooks, recover them with sturdy fabric and then break open the craft drawer and let your kids go wild! Last year’s binder becomes a work of art.

8. Make it a game. Each morning, get out the stopwatch and have everyone race through the house to ensure all lights are off and appliances and electronics are unplugged. This helps save energy, and reduces your electricity bill and burns off excess energy!

9. Paint the classroom green. Encourage your child’s school administrators to have recycle bins in the schoolyard, classroom and hallways so kids develop the habit early. If your school doesn’t have recycling, bring in your own bins and set up a collection schedule with other parents! If your town is a Recyclebank community, families can take turns collecting bins and share the coupons with the classroom. Many towns supply recycling bins to residents, but if yours doesn’t places like Home Depot and Target sell them.

10. Form a club. If you have junior high or high school aged kids, ask your school if you can form a “Green Club.” Members can serve as green ambassadors in their respective classrooms, and help raise awareness and implement school-wide eco-friendly actions.

Miles and Zoe have their first day of School on Wednesday. Miles, it’s his official first day and I just don’t know what to do. Am I supposed to be happy about it, or sad. I’m both! I’m quite sad about him leaving, as he describes it, I won’t have anyone to play with, read to, sing with, or watch TV with. But I’ll have time to work uninterrupted which I hear is SO VALUABLE. Now thinking about it from a green point of view. What can I do to green the first day of school. I have a few days to prepare and I do still need to find back to school clothes.

Backpacks made from recycled plastic bottles reduce landfill waste

Good Fabrics to Look Out For

Basically, you sandwich bag can be any material you can find in the store.

Rio Movie Night with h20 Giveaway

Beat the summer heat with family movie night! h2O®, the natural spring water in a revolutionary paper bottle recently partnered with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment for the Blu-ray and DVD release of Rio.

h2O is a great way to offer today’s environmentally-conscious bottled water addicted drinker to still have that bottled water in a way that won’t fill up a landfill. h20 minimizes the consumer’s impact on the environment while at the same time provides a safe drinking experience with no danger of chemicals leaching into the water. They are mainly made of paper, a renewable resource and are completely recyclable.

clip_image001RIO, from the makers of the hit ICE AGE series, is a comedy-adventure about taking a walk on the wild side and it’s quite fun to watch and listen to. The music is FANTASTIC. Blu is quite spectacular himself. He is a domesticated Macaw who never learned to fly, living a comfortable life with his owner and best friend Linda in the small town of Moose Lake, Minnesota. Blu and Linda think he’s the last of his kind, but when they learn about another Macaw who lives in Rio de Janeiro, they head to the faraway and exotic land to find Jewel, Blu’s female counterpart. Which is when all the adventure begins, not long after they arrive, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by a group of bungling animal smugglers.  With the help of street smart Jewel, and a group of wise-cracking and smooth-talking city birds, Blu escapes. Now, with his new friends by his side, Blu will have to find the courage to learn to fly, thwart the kidnappers who are hot on their trail, and return to Linda, the best friend a bird ever had. We all loved watching Rio.

Have you done your back to school shopping yet, are your kids back in school yet? Mine won’t be going back until after Labor Day. That’s just how we swing on the West Coast, or at least in the Pacific Northwest. So we haven’t even thought about getting back to school supplies, but I do suppose that it is time to get into that frame of mind. Both of my children will be in preschool next year, so I’m going to need to be ready for lunches and afternoon snacks. If you know me, I work really hard to feed my children healthy and what better way than to use organic food.

The first part of the competition is about Back To School Shopping.

Have a Mold Problem, Check Out Natural Concrobium Mold Control Giveaway

Living in the Pacific Northwest where it’s almost always wet has taught me a thing or two about mold and how hard it is to get rid of once you have it. Our old house, had broken window seals. The double pain windows were not keeping moisture out of the house like they were supposed to so the walls were getting moldy around the windows. It was a pain in the butt to get rid of. I even thought I got rid of it all and painted the walls and guess what? The nasty mold came back! YUCK! I think I finally got rid of it with bleach and new clip_image002windows because it did finally stop coming back but it took forever and I can’t count how many chemicals I used. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a natural mold control solution?

Traditional mold-fighting solutions, like bleach, can kill mold temporarily but will not prevent it from coming back. Planet People’s Concrobium Mold Control, an EPA-registered 2-in-1 solution, gives moms the power to both eliminate and prevent mold from coming back without resorting to hazardous chemicals like bleach. Concrobium keeps children free from the accompanying negative health effects of indoor mold while effectively and safely removing the problem.

image

I received some to see if it would fight the mold or whatever is growing on our back porch. But it appears that whatever is on our back porch is more of a stain. The main use for Concrobium is to kill mold spores and prevent future mold growth, not to necessarily remove mold stains. If there is residual staining from the mold, which is essentially a cosmetic issue once the mold has been killed, treatments such as repainting or sanding may be necessary if Concrobium hasn’t fully eliminated the stain.

Reduced Environmental Footprint with iQ Cleaning Solution

I’d call myself a brand loyalist. I have select brands I love to use in my life, and I use them religiously. For my cleaning I use a store bought concentration. I fill the bottles myself and am sometimes too lazy to use a funnel so I lose valuable product and it really is money down the drain depending on that day’s aim. I have recently been converted to a REFill® (Reduced Environmental Footprint) cartridge technology by the iQ cleaning line which involves reusable bottles and no mess, perfectly measured concentrated cleaning solution for my entire house.

iq cleaner

EASY! In the first picture, is the reusable bottle and cartridge (so you know what you’re looking for). The middle picture is the reusable bottle filled with water to the premeasured line. The cartridge has been placed and rests on top of the bottle; a hole in the middle of the cartridge is just the perfect size for the straw of the spray nozzle. The last picture is me attaching the spray nozzle to the bottle at which time the cartridge released the cleaning concentrate. Brilliant, no? Any the best part … wait for it … no, don’t … YOUR CHILDREN can do it! Get your children to help you clean and making it fun as they can watch the mixture form. “The mix” is made from plant based and ecologically sustainable ingredients.

The iQ cleaning line, brought to us by Planet People, reduces plastic waste by 80% by having purchasers switch to 3½-inch REFIlls eliminating the need to product millions of fill-sized plastic containers. iQ also helps save the environment by not shipping “water” across the continent. Erin Green, president of Plant People, “It takes an astonishing gallon of crude oil to make just 29 bottles of household cleaner and even more to transport it across the country or continent. For a product that is 95% water, the costs to the environment – and to the consumer – just don’t add up.”

clip_image002

The iQ Starter Kit, which includes your refillable bottler and one REFill cartridge, will run you about $5. Then a REFill replacement cartridge will only dig into your pocket for approximately $2 each.

I love iQ. It cleans perfectly, smells great (you know the clean smell – they have it nailed with hints of green tea, bamboo berry, nectarine and plum), and is easy to use! Highly, highly, highly recommended from me; as I stated, I’ve converted to iQ.

You can purchase Plant People products, including iQ and REFill cartridges on Drugstore.com, Alice.com, or a local retailer near you. Locate the Planet People on their website, and also find iQ cleaning products on their site. Find out more about iQ cleaner by Liking iQ Cleaner on Facebook. Track the Planet People and their products on Twitter @PlanetPeopleCo.
