A Cute Felt Easter Basket Filled With Fun Items

Baskets from the Bunny – How to Avoid the Sugar Rush… and CRASH!

By: Ashley

I have great memories of Easter as a child… and one of those memories truly is begging for candy from my Easter basket. Unfortunately, I also remember nearly getting sick one Easter because I kept sneaking candy without my parents knowing! I was a child who loved to share though… and I shared with the dog. Poor dog. She ended up sicker than I did. She liked Peeps… I didn’t.

Easter

ANYWAY… now that I have a little one of my own… a little one who doesn’t really know the wonders of candy and chocolate… I’ve had to make a few decisions. The first was whether or not we were even going to do an Easter basket. My husband and I decided that done within reason (no crazy elaborate baskets filled with 80 pounds of candy and 32 new toys), an Easter basket was an okay thing to do. It’s a great time to help little ones realize how happy they can be with simple things and a great way to welcome in spring!

That said, here are some ideas on how to keep an Easter basket low in sugar, calories, and cost.

- $1 Toys – We stopped in the handy dollar section at Target and picked up 1 (yes O-N-E) toy to add to the basket. It’s a little zippy car. No logos, no characters… just a car. They also had toys geared towards little girls, but the point is, one and done! Both one dollar and one toy. =)bunny ears

- Bubbles! – Bubbles are the toy that everyone loves. Big and small, bubbles are a great way to get outdoors and have some fun! Easter3

- Multi-purpose “Basket” – First of all, don’t feel the need to spend money on an elaborate basket. Look for a multi-purpose, inexpensive goody holder. We actually found a cute frog bucket made out of felt. It says “spring” but also says $1.50 on the price tag. Even better is that once Easter is over, it still looks cute out holding toys during the spring and summer.

- Non-Candy Treats – Yes, there will be a few sweet treats in the Easter basket, but there will also be Rainbow Goldfish! It’s something he loves… and they’re not too bad for you! Pirate booty, cute shaped pretzels, dried fruit… whatever floats your non-candy boat. Easter2

- Plastic Eggs – USE THEM! Instead of putting an entire anything of food in the basket, put 2 or 3 of something in each egg. This limits how much candy you need to buy and limits how much will get eaten. =) This year, I heard the Easter Bunny is going to put a few M&Ms in 5 or 6 plastic eggs for Atticus. In the others, there is going to be a few colorful Goldfish crackers. (At least that’s what I’ve heard! ;) )

Do you have any good ideas for Easter baskets that you’d like to share? Leave a comment. We’d love to hear what you have to say!

Happy Easter!

T-Shirt Craft: Make Your Own Valentine’s Day Clothing

By: Ashley

I’ve been on the look out for simple, fun, and easy crafts that anyone can do… and that anyone can do last minute. I know that I always have these daydreams of getting my Martha Stewart on and having cute, homemade décor for whatever holiday happens to be just around the corner. It never happens though. I’m a procrastinator. I’m also a planner. Odd combination, right? Nevertheless, I’ve been lucky enough to stumble across yet another awesome craft that anyone can do for Valentine’s Day… and that you can do at the last minute.

Stamping With Paint

How to Make a Valentine’s T-Shirt

You will need:

You Will Need

- One pre-washed t-shirt
- Fabric paint in a contrasting color
- Paper doilies (heart-shaped)
- Sponge paint dabbers
- Piece of poster or cardboard

Directions:

1. Lay the shirt out flat. Put the cardboard in between the layers of the shirt so that the paint will not bleed through.

2. Place the heart-shaped doily on the center of the shirt (or use this chance to express some artistic freedom if you’re brave).

3. Dip the sponge into the paint, dab off the excess, and begin stamping the dabber all around the doily. Use the doily as a stencil.

4. Once you have covered the entire doily area with paint, carefully remove the doily. Allow the paint to dry. Remove the cardboard and VOILA! You have a cute Valentine’s Day shirt to wear every year!

Finished ShirtThis was really easy to do and you could make shirts for you, your kids, even your dog if you wanted! If you decide to try it out, leave a comment (better yet a picture) and let us know!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Jewelry Craft: Ring Around the Kisses for Valentine’s Day!

By: Ashley

I have to say that one of my favorite things to do when I was a kindergarten teacher was allow students to decorate bags to hold their little Valentine cards. To be honest, I’m not that big on the store-bought chocolates, comic book character overpriced pieces of cheap cardstock, or the dozen roses that seem to be SUPER expensive during the month of February. What I DO like though, is celebrating love, friendship, and how much you value relationships. A day to tell someone “I love you” just because? YES! I’m in. You don’t need to buy a $5 greeting card or $50 bouquet of roses. In fact, all you need is 2 pipe cleaners and a chocolate kiss! Here is a super easy craft idea that you and your kids can have fun with. I saw this in Family Fun and had to give it a try!

You will need:

- Regular craft pipe cleaners (color of your choice)

- Chocolate drop candies (I used Hershey Kisses)

Instructions:

1. Cross the pipe cleaners and twist them in the center.

2. Bring the pipe cleaners around the tip of the candy and twist to secure them around the Hershey Kiss.

3. Mold the pipe cleaners into a ring. Wrap the excess around the base of the Hershey Kiss or snip off the ends.

4. If you want, you can add a little note to your ring and use them in a class Valentine exchange.

Let us know if you try this out. Feel free to leave a picture of your own “Ring Around the Kisses” experiments in the comments.

How To Make an Heirloom Serving Tray with BabbaBox

It’s that time of year to make Christmas Presents and I wanted to teach the kids that they could do it themselves. We decided to make a serving tray that will be very memorable for years to come by making and heirloom serving tray.

Gather the Supplies:

A Clear serving tray, glass or plastic
Craft Paint
Paint Brush
Water
Cup
Children’s hands

IMG_6185

Paint your child’s hand with a generous amount of paint.

IMG_6186

Stamp the painted hand on the back of the tray. And write their names backwards.

IMG_6187

Because when you flip the tray over you want to be able to read it.

IMG_6188

Then I let Zoe paint a border all by herself.

IMG_6189

And we ended up with:

IMG_6192

This was all made possible with the BabbaBox.

The whole idea started when Jessica Kim was trying to teach her daughter about the life of a butterfly. She thought by doing a craft together they could learn at the same time- but inevitably Jessica wound up with 400 googly eyes when she only needed 2, 60 pipe cleaners when she only needed 4…you get the idea. She figured there has to be a better way to engage kids and connect with them on another level while teaching them in a fun way.The monthly box arrives at your door with everything a busy parent needs to be able to engage their kids in a fun, age-appropriate way through crafts, digital apps, children’s books and exploring the outdoors.IMG_6184

We received the “Harvest” BabbaBox for review on MomStart.

Robot Making Crafts with Zoe and Miles: Disney Family Fun Kids Magazine

We need craft ideas, one because Zoe adores art and crafts two because it rains a lot here. So when Disney Publishing offered to send me a copy of Disney’s new Family Fun Kids magazine I said yes please do send my way.

IMG_5843

From the editors at Disney FamilyFun magazine, Disney FamilyFun Kids celebrates and enhances kids’ creative abilities with ideas, games, and puzzles that they can explore on their own. The magazine is designed to be a tactile product with high quality, family and kid-tested activities. There are no rules – kids can write in it, cut it up or fold pages – and they’re encouraged to do so!

So to make our robots this is what we did. We got out all our supplies and rounded up some boxes and construction paper.

How To Make Funny or Scary Face Lanterns

We found this craft in the Disney Family Fun Magazine and the kids needed a rainy day craft. It was perfect for our Halloween décor but I could see fun in this for any party you might have to decorate your porch for coming visitors. It’s sure to make your porch stand out against the crowd.

Rainy Day Craft, How To Make Necklaces & Bracelets From Drinking Straws

It’s raining outside and the kids are grounded. I’m not sure how much of a punishment it is for the kids. It almost feels like more of a punishment to me. We can’t play with friends and Miles has lost half of his toys. So I find myself having to entertain them more than I usually do.

image

We decided to make a craft or two day. The first one we made was straw necklaces. It’s real simple and you probably already have everything you need.

How to Make Straw Jewelry

Supplies:

String (we used Christmas Wrapping Ribbon)
Colored Straws
Scissors

Directions:

Cut the straws (Zoe did all of this herself, and Miles did a few)

IMG_5394

Cut the ribbon and tie a not on the end

IMG_5393

Put the cut up straws on the string

IMG_5396

Then you have one very happy girl

Cheese Slice
Red Pepper Flag

Directions:

Cut a red pepper in half lengthwise, be sure to remove the seeds

Fill each pepper egg salad. Sink a thin pretzel stick mast into the center of the boat, then add two triangular pieces of cheese for sails.

Use a dab of cream cheese to fix a small red pepper flag to the top of the mast.

- Entertain your little scallywags with the game of "Captain’s Calling!"

pirate ship cake

pirate-ship-cake-recipeIngredients:

2 baked 9" or 10" round cakes
3 to 4 cups chocolate icing
Chocolate wafer sticks (such as Pepperidge Farm Pirouette Cookies)
Milk chocolate wafer rolls (Waffeletten cookies)
Several pieces of white or off-white paper
3 10" wooden skewers
Malted milk balls
Rolo candies
Root beer barrels
Plastic pirate figures (we used Playmobil), washed thoroughly

Directions:

Cut the cakes in half and layer them, rounded sides all facing the same direction, adding a thin coat of chocolate icing between the layers.

Step 2 Trim the bottom curves of the cakes slightly to help them sit flat, then turn the cakes upright, as shown. (Tip: If necessary, wrap the cakes in plastic and chill in the freezer to make them firmer. Also, two drinking straws stuck through the four layers of cake will help keep them together.)

Cover with the chocolate icing, then create planking lines along the hull with a butter knife. Chill at least one hour to firm the icing.

Use dabs of icing to anchor wafer stick gunwales along the edge of the deck.

Press the wafer rolls into both sides of the ship for cannons.

Cut sails from the paper, then slip them onto the skewers and set the masts in place.

Add malted milk ball cannonballs, plenty of Rolo gold booty, and root beer barrels, then station a few pirates to keep watch.

For safety, place the candles in the cookie cannons, far from the paper sails. Also, make sure that the surface on which the cake rests is impervious to wax, as the burning candles will drip.

Feel Free to download your own Jake and the Never Land Pirates party kit with Jake and the Never Land Pirates invitations, recipes, games and activities.

Here is our party experience:

We received a Jake and The Never Land Pirates party pack in anticipation of Talk like a pirate day and the release of "Jake and the Never Land Pirates:Yo Ho, Mateys Away!" DVD featuring seven episodes from the series on September 27. We put the DVD in this morning and are having an at home sick party. Yes the Bishop family has our annual back to school cold. Seems like school and kids are a germ infestation and even I’m sick today. YUCK.

So we’re cheering ourselves up with back to back episodes of Jake and the Never Land Pirates:Yo Ho, Mateys Away. Jake and the Never Land Pirates is cable’s #1 series among Boys 2-5 and is on track to be Disney Channel’s #1 preschool series ever.  It is the most co-viewed series among all Disney Junior and Nickelodeon series, with 47% of Moms watching with their preschooler.  A music-filled interactive treasure hunt, the series introduces a crew of kid pirates – leader Jake and pals Izzy and Cubby – and follows their Never Land adventures as they work to outwit two infamous characters, the one and only Captain Hook and Smee, from Disney’s classic "Peter Pan."  Every episode features the animated Sharky and Bones characters as they pop up throughout to perform original pirate ditties, and each episode concludes with a live action music video featuring The Never Land Pirate Band.

IMG_4647

We are having chocolate coins the size of cookies. Our friends are going to all be getting copies of Jake and the Never Land Pirates later today. We were supposed to have a play date today but I canceled it yesterday just knowing something was amiss. I know that even though Miles isn’t feeling well, he cheered right up and starting saying ARRGH, and Ahoy Matey when he saw the box of party supplies. They LOVE Jake and the Never Land Pirates.

We received party supplies, photos, and materials from Disney and from a PR company representing Disney to have a Jake and the Never Lands Pirate party. Even though having a cold messed up our party plans our spirit couldn’t not be squashed.
