Make Your Own Super Oatmeal Recipe

By Summer,

I’ve been very proud of my “Super Oatmeal” for years now, though I have to admit things have evolved since its inception. It simple started out as oatmeal the way parents made it for me and became a healthier beast so I could get my children eating naturally; my goal was to have them get vitamins from the source. Let me say that my children do all take a slew of pills the pediatrician have recommended; if their bodies don’t need the extra vitamins from the supplement then their bodies will discard it.

Here’s my secret to Super Oatmeal:

Super Oatmeal Recipe:

Ingredients:

¼ cup of dry rolled quick oats
½ cup of milk
1 Tablespoon ground flaxseed
1 Tablespoon wheat germ
1 teaspoon raw shelled hemp seed
¼ teaspoon of cinnamon
¼ cup all natural apple sauce, chilled
1 capsule probiotic, opened to release powder and discard capsule

Directions:

1. In a microwave safe bowl add oats, milk, flaxseed and wheat germ. Cook in microwave on high for 2 minutes, or your preference of soaked oat mixture.

2. Top oat mixture with hemp seed, cinnamon, apple sauce and probiotic. Stir to combine. Serve.

If you wish to increase the amount of oatmeal I don’t typically increase the add-ins unless I’m making a batch large enough to feed both children (usually I’ll make 1 cup to feed both children); in which case I double the add-ins. The only exception is apple sauce; I add the same amount of apple sauce as dry oats.

My children have “Super Oatmeal” once a day. If they choose not to have oatmeal for breakfast they typically want it for lunch. I like knowing I’m fueling their systems in a healthy way.

If you’re looking for a gluten free (GF) oatmeal option, you can purchase (gluten free oats) GF oats. These oats are a specialty but check your local stores or Amazon. You will also have to eliminate the wheat germ, but this would still make a vitamin packed breakfast, lunch or snack!

As a side note, yogurt is a healthy way to get probiotic. My children do eat yogurt every day, but I still add the probiotic in oatmeal. Anything their bodies don’t use will pass through.

If your family doesn’t drink cow’s milk you can supplement “milk” for goat milk, almond milk, rice milk, soy milk, etc. But be aware that I haven’t used any of these other milk, so with your knowledge of the product determine how much you should use per serving to cook the oats and create a smooth oatmeal texture.

I add chilled (just from the refrigerator) apple sauce which cools the oatmeal for the children to eat it NOW. I don’t add enough to make the oatmeal cold.

Raw hemp seeds have a strong flavor. I’d add them in slowly to your “super oatmeal” including small quantities first and trying to work your way to the amount desired. In case you’re wondering, hemp seed will NOT get you high, and is good for your health offering Omega 3 and Omega 6.

I purchase most of my ingredients in bulk. If you’re local to me, within Washington State, here’s how I do it. I get my oats and wheat germ from TOP food’s bulk section. I purchase my milk from Smith Brothers (so it’s local and less than 24 hours old when I get it on my doorstep); deliveries at my house happen weekly. I get my flaxseed, hemp seed, cinnamon, apple sauce, and probiotic at Costco.
