Rainy Day Craft, How To Make Necklaces & Bracelets From Drinking Straws

It’s raining outside and the kids are grounded. I’m not sure how much of a punishment it is for the kids. It almost feels like more of a punishment to me. We can’t play with friends and Miles has lost half of his toys. So I find myself having to entertain them more than I usually do.

We decided to make a craft or two day. The first one we made was straw necklaces. It’s real simple and you probably already have everything you need.

How to Make Straw Jewelry

Supplies:

String (we used Christmas Wrapping Ribbon)
Colored Straws
Scissors

Directions:

Cut the straws (Zoe did all of this herself, and Miles did a few)

IMG_5394

Cut the ribbon and tie a not on the end

IMG_5393

Put the cut up straws on the string

Savvy On-line Shopping and American Express – What’s Your Biggest Shopping Mistake?

Thinking back to my biggest shopping mistake would have to be admitting that I’m not very good at shopping for cars. I don’t do the research and I am terrible at negotiating a fair price. I hate buying a car and just want to get the process over with as soon as possible. So my biggest shopping mistake was buying a car without going on-line, finding the best price, and then making the dealer I want to work with give me the best price. You can save thousands of dollars by being prepared. I’ve seen my parents do it so I know I can do it.

image

Next time I go buy a car look out because I’m an on-line informed shopper. My other shopping mistake was overspending. Yep I’m guilty of that too. Sigh!

I’m working with American Express Membership Rewards again to share some Savvy On-line shopping tips with you guys so you make smart purchases all the time.

AMEX-Logo

How Can You Be A Savvy Shopper?

Do Your Research. You should always be in the know before you make a purchase. There are so many tools on-line to find the best price. Before buying a car you can find out how much the dealership paid for it, then you should only pay 100 to 500 more than what they paid for it. Use Consumer Reports for product information and about how much it should cost. Is it worth your money to buy. Know before you buy. While we’re thinking about cars did you know that American Express covers roadside assistance? Cardmembers can use Roadside Assistance if their car dies or blows a tire and they’re stranded.  They will be covered for up to four times a year, up to $50 per service call.

Think Before You Buy. It’s very important when you’re making a purchase over 250.00 to think about it first. Make sure you need it and that you won’t regret it. Sometimes sleeping on it is much better than in impulse buy that you are going to regret.

Understand return policies. As I mentioned I’m guilty of overspending on occasion and often have buyers remorse. I’ve taken a thing or two back to the store, but you have to know before hand that the store will take things back. Also, make sure items come with a warranty so that if you get a dud and you opened the box you can still take it back. American Express Return Protection can be used when a Cardmember no longer wants an item they purchased but the merchant’s return policy has expired and they will no longer take the item back. Return Protection refunds the full purchase price of an item up to $300, excluding shipping and handling of eligible items bought with the Card for up to 90 days from the date of purchase. The maximum annual refund is $1,000 annually per Card account.

Know who you are buying from. No I’m not saying you have to personally know everyone that you buy something from. You need to make sure that people you buy from are verified sellers, or trusted retailers. Also, it’s important to understand how your credit card will protect you when you purchase something on-line from an untrusted vendor. American Express Purchase Protection can protect eligible purchases made with the Card against accidental damage and theft for up to 90 days from the date of purchase.  This service can be used when something a Cardmember buys is broken or stolen. With Purchase Protection, American Express will repair, replace, or reimburse up to the amount charged to the Card, not to exceed the original purchase price.  Coverage is up to $1,000 per Occurrence, up to $50,000 per Cardmember Account per Calendar Year.

When using credit make sure you’re earning points like the American Express Membership Rewards. We are always using points when we use our cards and it’s fun to redeem the points for things we need or want for Christmas. You can easily earn points on everyday items like gas, groceries, phone bills and redeem them for practical items like paying your taxes OR social efforts like donations to charities OR for the things you love – like extraordinary shopping to entertainment to travel rewards – it’s a world of possibilities and the choice is yours! Mini-Cinni Buns Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup milk, warm
2 eggs, room temperature
1 cup butter, divided (2/3 at room temperature and 1/3 melted)
2½ teaspoons quick rise yeast
3 cups flour
1 cup wheat germs
½ ground flaxseed
½ quick oats
½ teaspoon salt
1¼ cups light brown sugar, divided
¼ cup apple sauce
¼ cup sugar
3 Tablespoons ground cinnamon
16 ounce cream cheese, room temperature
1½ cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

1. Mix milk, eggs, 1/3 cup butter, yeast, flour, wheat germ, flaxseed, oats, salt, ½ cup brown sugar and apple sauce in your Kitchen Aid mixer using the dough hook attachment.

2. Grease a mixing bowl and dump dough inside. Place in a warm location. (I used my oven on its lowest setting and propped the door open using my oven mitts to prop the door and keep the oven light off.) Allow to double in size, about an hour. In the meantime, combine ¾ light brown sugar, sugar, and cinnamon. Fill a shaker with cinnamon-sugar mix.

3. When the dough has risen, turn out onto a floured surface. Melt 1/3 cup butter. Preheat oven to 350oF. Grease a jelly roll pan.

4. Divide into halves setting one aside. Roll one half of dough to a 1/16” thick rectangle. Brush generously with butter and sprinkle generously with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Cut dough into fourths so small rolls will form upon rolling. Tightly roll each section. Then cut into rolls about 1” high. Place each roll in the jelly roll pan leaving some room in between as the rolls will expand during baking. REPEAT with second half of dough and reuse any dough remnants by repeating.

5. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes or until rolls are golden brown.

6. While rolls are baking, wash your Kitchen Aid mixer bowl and fill with cream cheese, 1/3 cup butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Whip together using the whisk attachment. Place icing in a bowl for dipping mini-cinni rolls.

Photography: A Drive Through St Charles #SuzukiMomFest

As I was test driving the Suzuki Kizashi and other Suzuki vehicles they brought to our Junk in the trunk scavenger hunt, I saw just how beautiful St Charles is. It’s Fall there and the leaves are changing colors and the sun was out. Here in the Pacific Northwest we have green all year round and clouds and rain in the fall. The sun just happens to be out today, but our photos don’t look like this.

St Charles

As I’m still putting together my thoughts on the event itself, which I LOVED, I wanted to share my photography. These shots were taken just from the hotel we stayed at.

Disney’s Winnie The Pooh on Blu-ray & DVD October 25th

By Summer

As always the Hundred Acre Wood delivers a heartwarming story of friendship as the gang – Pooh, Tigger, Rabbit, Owl, Piglet, Kanga, Roo, Eeryore, and Christopher Robin – face hurdles in life. On October 25th you’ll feel more than just a little rumbly in your tummy Pooh style as you hunger for the newest Winnie the Pooh movie on DVD. This newest theatrically featured movie has all of your most loved A.A. Milnes characters in their Disney made-over form on a lost and found hunt. In this tale Eeyore has lost his tail, and Christopher Robin has gone missing. Though Eeroye’s tail is a definite mystery, the friends are sent on a wild goose chance to find him a new one while in the middle of their quest Christopher Robin is captured by the Backson monster. OH BOTHER, what will these friends do?

clip_image002

Who do you know from Winnie the Pooh?

· John Cleese is the Narrator; You’ll know him best for his comedy and from his work in Monty Python.

· Jim Cummings is Winnie the Pooh and Tigger; You may not know his face but you know his voice! Name a Disney movie or show … go ahead, think of one … Yeah, he’s in that!

image

· Craig Ferguson is Owl; Known for his Scottish accent, Ferguson has a current late night show. Your children might recognize his voice from How to Train Your Dragon.

· Tom Kenny is Rabbit; He is also a man of many voices. Think of your favorite non-Disney cartoon, yeah, he’s probably in that.

image

· Bud Luckey is Eeyore; Known more for his work in the animation department (think Pixar), he was also the voice of Chuckles from Toy Story 3 and Agent Rick Dicker from the Incredible.

· And my favorite, Zooey Deschanel as the featured vocalist; You might recognize her unique singing voice from the movie Elf or from her singing career in the indie folk band “She & Him”.

On this new disc there are also two shorts; one is The Ballad of Nessie which was shown in the beginning of the theatrical showing of Winnie the Pooh, and the other is Mini-Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: The Balloon. On the disc you’ll also get deleted scenes, sing-along with the movie to seven featured songs from the film, and song selection of seven other featured tunes.

My sons love this movie about friendship, but I have to say my 4YO “scaredy-cat” is afraid of the Backson. He’ll bite his nails through the movie hoping the Backson doesn’t get his beloved friends of the Hundred Acre Wood; so he especially hates the end when they show an actual Backson. My “brave” little 2YO however LOVES this movie and wants to restart it as soon as it’s ended! I also adored this Winnie the Pooh movie, and even my husband likes it. Winnie the Pooh is now in our regular movie night rotation!

Mom Start’s Rating of Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: A- (only for all you less than brave souls out there)

You can preorder your copy of Winnie the Pooh on DVD with Blu-Ray with Digital Copy ($28) or without Digital Copy ($25) on Amazon NOW!

Funky monkey! My sons and I make up funny names for each other or body parts or things we see around the house … you know just the silly games that come up with a 4 and 2 YO. Now my sons ask for Funky Monkey and I know they mean fruit snacks. Not just fruit snacks, but real snacks made out of real fruit! Funky Money’s fruit is dehydrated and offers a crunch when snacking, but it’s only fruit — no tree nuts and peanut free, just 100% raw real fruit with no added sugar. These Funky Monkey snack are great for preschool snacks, school lunches, and would make a great Halloween substitute instead of candy!

Pump Up Upside Down Apple Cake With Angostura Bitters

More Cream of Wheat Goes Gourmet Plus a Recipe Addition You’ll Enjoy. Angostura Bitters.

UpsideDownAppleCake1

I received yet another outstanding recipe from Cream of Wheat this time the recipe is by Donatella Arpaia. Arpaia’s first restaurant was the wildly successful Bellini which celebrated the Italian cuisine of her youth. Looking to venture into a different cuisine, she first partnered with Chef David Burke. Their instant connection was evident in davidburke and donatella, the duo’s immensely popular eatery. Then Arpaia furthered her expansion by teaming up with then unknown chef Michael Psilakis as they opened a string of highly acclaimed restaurants such as Dona, Anthos, and Kefi in Manhattan as well as EOS and bistro e in Miami. She created this recipe and I’m suggestion one minor addition.

Angostura Bitters. Add 1 tablespoon Angostura aromatic bitters to this recipe just to enhance the already wonderful flavor. You see, Angostura Bitters are usually used in alcoholic cocktails, but used in a recipe the bitters just enhances the flavors.

Upside Down Apple Cake Originally by Donatella Arpaia

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and spray a 10" spring form pan.

For the apples

Ingredients

2 granny smith apples (or your favorite apple for baking)
2Tbsp unsalted butter

Directions:

Peel and core apples and slice to 1/4 inch thickness. Heat butter in a pan over medium heat and cook until juices release and apples are tender.

For the Cake Batter

Ingredients:

3 c. milk
8T cream of wheat
1 cinnamon stick
1/2 vanilla bean
1/2 c granulated sugar
2 eggs
4T butter
1/4c light brown sugar

Directions:

In a medium sauce pan, bring milk, vanilla bean and cinnamon stick to a simmer. Stir in cream of wheat and cook stirring often until mixture has thickened according to package directions. Allow to cool.

Stir into the cooled cream of wheat mixture the sugar and eggs.

Toss the Apple slices in the Angostura Bitters.

Melt the 4T butter and pour into the spring form pan. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over it and lay the apple slices in a circular fashion over the top.

Drop spoonfuls of the cake batter on top of the apple slices and spread evenly, taking care not to disturb the apples.

Bake for 25 minutes or until the cake has puffed slightly and a knife inserted comes out clean.

Cool for 10 minutes, and carefully invert on to a serving plate.

I am working with Mizkan as a Blogger Advocate. I was compensated to use and write about Angostura Bitters.
