Bierock Russian Meat Pies AKA Runza Recipe

Bierock Russian Meat Pies (a.k.a. Runza) Recipe:

clip_image002

Runza Ingredients:

Dough:
clip_image0044½ cups Flour
¼ cup ground flaxseed
¼ cups wheat germ
½ cup sugar
½ ounce active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
¾ cup milk
½ cup water
½ cup butter
2 eggs

Filling:
1 pound ground beef
1 pound ground breakfast-style pork sausage
1 medium white onion
2 cups green cabbage
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper

Recipe Directions:

1. Combine milk, water, and butter. Heat together until butter is melted. Stir constantly, and don’t boil (if on the stove top).

2. Combine all dry dough ingredients into Kitchen Aid stand mixer and stir using dough hook. Slowly add in hot liquid. Combine.

3. Drop in eggs and thoroughly mix until dough is liquid-like. Remove boil from stand mixer and cover with a warm damp towel. Move dough to a warm location and allow to rise for at least 1 hour.

4. In the meantime, chop onion and shred cabbage. In a frying pan throw in all filling ingredients and cook until meats are thoroughly cooked and cabbage is wilted.

After the hour preheat oven to 350oF and punch down dough. Turn out onto clean surface for rolling. Break dough in half for easier rolling. Roll to 1/16” thick.

5. To make the pockets, cut into 5×5 inch squares and fill with meat mixture. Fold two sides into the middle and press dough together. Collect the unsealed ends and fold them in toward the middle by the first seam. Ends may not meet; don’t force it, just seal so the meat is contained in a pocket.

6. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes or until dough is golden brown (remember inside are already cooked). Cool at least 5 minutes before serving.

clip_image006

clip_image008As you can tell, many of the ingredients are burger-like. I like my Runzas plan but my husband and kids like theirs with ketchup.

clip_image010You will have extra dough so if you prefer thicker dough walls, make accordingly. I take the remaining dough and make a free form loaf of sweet bread which is fine alone or makes a great French Toast though I’ve made it into garlic bread and it works.

I make my pockets into a rectangle; this reminds me of Runzas from my undergraduate college days at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Traditional bierock should be triangular; which is doable with this recipe, just fold one corner to the other and seal the open two sides by pressing between thumb and forefinger or use a fork to make more decorative edges.

Children’s Museum in Seattle Deal $7 For 2 Tickets

We love visiting the Children’s museum in Everett and in Seattle. This juicy deal is for the one located in Seattle. The Children’s museum is celebrating it’s 31st year as a place for children to go and explore fun exhibits. They have so much fun they don’t even realize they are learning.

Save 15.00 on the price of two tickets. Get 2 Tickets to the Children’s Museum in Seattle for $7.00.

Last time we went to the one in Seattle the kids had a blast with the Curious George Exhibit. The Curious George exhibit was a temporary exhibit that we loved a lot, but they have plenty of exhibits that we love that are always there. Kids can explore the Imagination Studio, a kid-sized art studio, where can let their imaginations run wild and hone their artistic skills. There’s also the Mountain Forest, which takes kids on an adventure through Washington’s forests as they look under rocks, crawl through a cave and follow animal tracks up the mountain. In The Neighborhood, four of the most popular exhibits await your little one – the Metropolitan Market Grocery Store, Dunn Lumber Construction Zone, Bijou Theatre, and Cocina del Cacto. If they need a break, check out the Story Telling Circle, where kids can sit and read their own book at the base of a tree, or listen to a storyteller bring a book to life.

So much to do in such a short amount of time.

Remember to verify the fine print for this deal: Limit one per person. Good for 2 General Admission tickets (ages 1 to adult) to be redeemed in one visit. TCM’s exhibits and programs target children ages 10 months to 10 years old. Must present JITC Deal Code printout to redeem.

Easy Chili Cheese Dip Recipe

So this month for Hormel, I’m supposed to blog about a last minute camping trip. Um, I’m not up for that, our weather here in Washington just hasn’t been camping friendly. Most of you saw how wet we all were for out last trip. I’ve also blogged a lot about S’mores for the Hershey’s campaign I was doing with them. So I decided to post about an awesome appetizer you can make for any last minute summer parties. Or maybe your family will be having a Labor Day celebration. Then this is the recipe for you, It is a family favorite.

Another party tip or two:

Bring pre-portioned items and fresh fruit and veggies on your camping trip. Since you’ll be enjoying the great outdoors, go for a hike and pack CHI-CHI’S® Snackers and sliced carrots for a nutritious, light snack to enjoy wherever the outdoors take you.

Consider serving popular summer staples like fresh fruit and salads that you can prepare ahead of time. A tangy and refreshing Pepperoni Pasta Salad is easy to prepare and refrigerate so you can focus on enjoying time with your guests.

This post enters me into a contest with Hormel Family Bloggers.

Carson-Dellosa Summer Bridge Activities Great For Back To School

When did August hit? Summertime might almost be over, but there is still time to get some mental gears turning to prevent summer regression. Beyond reading, your child needs to work on their math, writing, science, and social studies. Get some work in and be ready for the school year with Summer Bridge Activities from Carson-Dellosa Publishing. According to the National Summer Learning Association, most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency over the summer months. You can be your child’s best advocate and get them back into the learning, and help stop regression.

clip_image002

Carson-Dellosa Publishing offers workbooks for toddlers through high schools. You can get grade level books or focus books beyond the basic classrooms learning in subjects such as Christian learning, fiction, foreign language and ESL, puzzles and games, test preparation and more.

These curriculum books are also excellent sources for not only summer breaks but during school year extended breaks or to help you further your child’s learning at home without the use of their boring, viewed-it-over-and-over-again school textbooks. Our family has a month long vacation planned during the school year and this book will help me keep my Pre-K student up on grade appropriate learning.

clip_image004 clip_image006

My son and I have done many of the pages from his Pre-K/Kindergarten practice book. He loves completing the tasks and earning his sticker for completing a page. He skips around and choses things he’s interested in like mazes and coloring robots (which is pre-mathematics as it’s a geometry lesson – tricked him into learning!). Actually my son loves learning and fondly calls this book his “drills”. He ASKS ME to do pages while is little brother is in naptime … what a problem to have! Working in his book also gives my son experience using pens and pencils. But when we don’t have a writing utensil, my son and I can keep up with his curriculum using Carson-Dellosa Publishing’s activity cards (offered for grades Pre-K through 5th), so you can get some learning-on-the-go into your schedule. The Carson-Dellosa activity cards are connected together by a plastic screw at the base and make a great learning tooling in an airport terminal, in the car, or at the doctor’s office. My son loves the small tasks, funny jokes, and cool facts.

It’s not too late to get what your child really needs for back to school. Get their school supplies and with Carson-Dellosa boost their brains! Get FREE SHIPPING on any $15+ online order using promotion code EVG121 between August 12-29, 2011 at checkout.

If you want to keep up with Carson-Dellosa Publishing you can do so not only through their site, and on Facebook and Twitter @CDPub as well. This will also keep you in the loop on any new products and special offers.

Facial Recognition Organization & Sharing Photos with Fotobounce

In this digital world we are all taking thousands of photos a month, some of us even more. What do we do with all of those photos. We like to back them up on three different computers and put them on the web. We’re really paranoid of losing our photos. As a blogger though, I use the photos for work, and sometimes I remember taking a photo of something in particular and I want to use that photo and it takes me forever to find if. I usually get fed up and either take a new photo or use a public domain photo. It would be a lot easier on me if I organized them. The Fotobounce software is a great way for me to organize and share my photos with others.

image

First let’s talk about the organization factor then we’ll talk about how cool the sharing features are. With Fotobounce you can easily organize your photos across your network. One of the first questions Fotobounce asked me about was if I would allow it to search our entire Local Area Network.  After you allow, then you can point to the folders where you Fotobounce has an amazing face recognition feature. Fotobounce has the ability to run through all of your photos and find the faces. Then as you tag photos by faces, it learns that face and then will automate tagging those faces that it recognizes. Thus saving me lots of time. Just getting back from Blogher11 I have lots of photos to go through and since I take about 10 of each shot it takes a ton of time to tag each photo. The facial recognition saves so much time and makes the photos easier to find as well. In addition to the facial recognition sorting method you can also organize photos by date, event, place, collection and any keyword you want to use. Making the search and find of photos much easier; a much needed feature for bloggers.

Now Fotobounce also makes sharing photos simple. The software asks you to login to your social networks and then it finds your photos there too. WOW, I was majorly impressed when I was able to see all my twitpics in one location. I didn’t even remember taking all of them. Super Cool feature there!

image

Photos or albums can be sent to Twitter from Fotobounce. Fotobounce is the only solution in the industry that allows an entire album to be attached to a single tweet. A very fast way to share your photos.

As a blogger, I’ve just accepted the fact that my photos are public and everyone can see them. Everyone knows what my kids look like, they can even recognize me on the spot. I know this, I also know how dangerous and scary it is to share your photos like that. Sharing your photos to sites like Facebook is putting your photos out there for the world to see, people’s accounts get hacked all the time and their personal family photos, children’s photos are suddenly in places they shouldn’t be. Fotobounce has built a private network for sharing your photos.

The Private Network is a close group of people where Fotobounce users (aka Bouncers) invite friends and family to share their photo libraries. This feature puts users in control of their photo privacy and enables them to define what is to be shared and with whom. To make it easier to build a Private Network, Fotobounce enables users to invite Bouncers by importing contacts from Gmail and Yahoo. Users can also organize Bouncers into groups.

As I was looking through the software I realized that this would mean that my friends would have to become bouncers to see the photos. That’s ok, basic functionality of Fotobounce is free all you have to do is Download Fotobounce here.

image

With the private network through Fotobounce:

  • See whether friends are online or offline similar to Skype™.
Bouncers who are online will show up clearly on the user’s Private Network panel. The user can then connect to those friends and browse their photos by People, Events, Places, Keywords, and Collections.
  • Invitations are emailed, along with sample photos.
A user can send a Bouncer invitation email and attach “teaser” photos so friends/family see a sample of the photos available for browsing.
  • Full control over privacy of personal photo collection.
Security and privacy of data is a major concern as demonstrated by the recent uproar over large social networks default privacy settings and associated complexity. Fotobounce places users in complete control of their photos and albums and who has access to view them. All transmissions of photos and associated data are encrypted with 128-bit SSL so users can rest assured that no one can view their photos unless authorized to do so.
  • Tags remain “intact” when tagged photos are transferred.
When users view a photo on a fellow Bouncer’s system, they will see all associated info tags and people tags attributed to the photo. If the photo is copied to a user’s local Fotobounce library, these tags remain intact, copying along with the photo. This saves time and effort for everyone in the Private Network.
Overall, I’m really impressed with Fotobounce.

From Museum of Flight To Lego Delight

Yesterday daddy took Miles out for a day along with daddy. Miles got to pick what he wanted to do and his first choice was to go to the donut shop. Then they went to the Museum of Flight in Seattle. The Museum of flight is perfect for little kids. There are so many different fun activities for all of them to enjoy. Turns out, they didn’t even do all of it in one day so we have to go back.

    mof1

Miles loves airplanes. Every time he sees one in the sky he gets excited. We see planes daily in the sky above our house so I hear his excitement every day. I also hear it when they take me to the airport for a blogging trip. There was a time, and I still wonder if he knows now, when he thought I worked at the airport. It seems hard for him to understand that I went somewhere other than the airport every time they dropped me off.

    mof2

    Point is He LOVES planes!

    mof4

When asked which ones were his favorite, it was really hard for him to decide. But I’m pretty sure he’s in love with The Blue Angels. The middle photo of the next three is a retired blue angel plane.

    mof5mof6mof7

He loved his experience so much that when he came home he reenacted his experience with LEGOS. He had to build some airplanes (mommy and daddy helped) and then after they were all built he had to put them in a museum. It was just ADORABLE. So here is Milesman’s Lego Museum of Flight.

Cooking With Miles: Pepperoni & Cheese Buns Recipe

I’ve mentioned before how much I LOVE pizza and we have it often. Tonight, I wanted to make another variation on something we love and I decided to let Miles help me out. He’s an excellent chef in the making.

We made pepperoni and cheese buns, however they actually look more like pizza bites.

    IMG_2974

    Pepperoni & Cheese Buns Recipe:

    Ingredients:

    Pepperoni
    Pizza Dough
Cheese (we used cheddar and parmesan)
    Tomato Sauce for dipping

    Directions:

    Roll out the pizza dough

    IMG_2925

Spread out the Pepperoni and the cheese

    IMG_2926

    Miles did both:

    IMG_2933

Then roll the dough like you were making cinnamon rolls:

    IMG_2935

See those cute little fingers rolling the dough, do it just like that.

Then cook it in the oven for 22 – 32 minutes, depending on how crunchy you like your dough.

Serve and dip in tomato sauce.

Better Homes and Gardens Bakeware Set Giveaway

I won The Better Homes and Gardens State Cookie Contest! Thank you all for so many votes. If it wasn’t for all of you voting for me everyday I wouldn’t have won. I really appreciate it and can’t wait to get my new bake ware set, and did you know that as the winner, I get to give a set away here on MomStart too! So listening to my annoying requests everyday on Facebook and Twitter paid off.

This is the cookie sheet and cookie that helped me win this competition.

     Chocolate Filled Rain Drop Cookies

I didn’t actually use the pan until after I baked the cookies, since the contest required me to use the pan in the picture I wanted a spanky clean new pan for the photo. Since then, I have used the pan twice and honestly, it looks better than I thought it would. It still looks new. My husband and I seem to be really hard on cookie sheets, or at least I thought we were. Turns out, after talking to my neighbors a really good cookie sheet is hard to come by. Some of my neighbors are using foil over their pan now.

If that’s you, this is the contest for you:

    image

This bakeware set is dishwasher safe and nonstick. But it does say for longer use do not put in the dishwasher. Ah huh, that’s my problem with cookies sheets. We ALWAYS put them in the dishwasher. I would love to see how the Better Home and Gardens Bake Wear holds up over the years.

Beanie Designs Organic Cotton Ear Flap A Great Way To Cuddle Your Cutie Giveaway

clip_image006So you might think that the middle of August is the wrong time to be thinking about warm snuggly baby hats … but maybe that’s just because you are living in a place where summer = hot, humid days and record breaking highs. (I envy those of you who are…) Anyway, whether you’re living where summer is in full swing, or it just makes a showing for an hour or so each day, Beanie Designs is a GREAT website to do some shopping in preparation for the chillclip_image004y weather that is really just around the corner. Don’t get me wrong, Beanie Designs also has a great selection of infant hats and baby accessories that are perfect for summer, but I was lucky enough to get to test out one of their top selling winter baby hats. The great selection and wide variety of products that you find at Beanie Designs actually range from the tiniest newborn hats, to knitted baby mittens and booties, and even hats for children into the preteen years!

Like I mentioned earlier, I was lucky enough to sample one of Beanie Designs’ customer favorites, the Beanie Designs (Organic Cotton Ear Flap Hat). When the hat arrived, I immediately pulled it out for my toddler. “Hat” was his first word, and he loves them! I guess I should add that Beanie Designs has great sizing for toddler hats. It was a perfect fit, but still left a little room for growing. I know it will come in use this winter when we hit our lovely, windy, PNW winter!

clip_image002The knit was extremely high quality and the yarn used was extremely soft. This is not the scratchy wool hat that you might be thinking of. According to Beanie Designs, ”all the cute baby, kids and toddler hats at Beanie Designs are 100% handmade with high-quality yarns and a focus on long-lasting comfort.” I can honestly say that I completely support their statement. While some of their prices may seem a bit high at first, their newborn, infant, and toddler hats are very high quality and will last quite awhile. They also offer free shipping on all US orders!

Even better, Beanie Designs has agreed to do a giveaway for MomStart readers! They will let you choose any baby hat from their site and ship it to you, free of charge!

This giveaway has ended. Congratulations to the winner, Nicole Larsen.
