Tuscan Soup Recipe

Tuscan Soup Recipe

1 onion, chopped
1 package Isernio’s Premium Italian Chicken Sausage
4 cups chicken broth (Making your own is easy; you might be surprised.)
5 large red or Yukon potatoes
¼ bunch fresh kale, washed and chopped
¼ cup cream

1. Cook sausage and onions until meat is cooked throughout over medium high heat in soup pot.

2. Add broth and potatoes. Boil until potatoes are tender.

3. Add kale and boil 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in cream.

This is my homemade chicken stock:

clip_image004

I got the Isernio’s Sausage from Costco in a 3 pack; I think each

package held a pound of meat. I really like that Isernio’s is local to me, here in Seattle. Inside you’ll find: chicken, salt, vinegar, lemon juice concentrate, fennel, water, spices (including pepper), bell pepper, dehydrated garlic, parsley, natural flavor. This particular package is gluten free. I love it and have used all three packages in this soup since purchase. I need to return to Costco and see if they have more; I love it! The item number is #7040, hope you can find it in your area and I hope I can still get it in mine too!

If you can’t get it at Costco, here is a Isernio coupon for grocery store purchasing. You can also aquire a coupon from “Liking” Isernio on Facebook, which you would naturally do anyway, right? (NOTE: These are two separate coupons for different items, so you’ll want to do both – visit their site and Facebook page.) You can also follow Isernio’s Sausage on Twitter @IsernioSausage … maybe more deals will pop up!

Disclosure: I just truly love this product. I was not approached by Isernio’s or their PR company to create this recipe or “review”. No samples were provide or compensation.

Children’s Book Review: God Gave Us You By Lisa Tawn Bergren

Children have lots of question. One of the biggest is where did I come from? Writer Lisa Tawn Bergren answers this multifaceted question when a cub asks her polar bear mother with a simple, God Gave Us You. Little cub’s digging “why’s” drive this story of a husband and wife wanting to extend their family; God Gave Us You tells about the blessings of being pregnant, having a baby, and being a family.

clip_image001

My sons and I love this book! We’ve read it many times and I not only love the entertainment, but I value the education it is giving them as they begin to explore God, their loving creator. This is a must add to your library and would make the perfect gift. This is great book in general for birthdays or Christmas (in July), but would make an EXCELLENT gift for soon-to-be siblings or for a baby shower.

God Gave Us You has been on the market as a paper book since 2000 and has grown to include six unique titles, but for the first time now God Gave Us You is available as a board book. This is great for me because I don’t have to worry about Riley, my 23MO, tearing up a paper copy.

You can currently get a hardcover (paper page) copy of God Gave Us You from Amazon for only $4.40. The new board book addition, available July 19, costs $6.99 on Amazon and you can have it on your doorstep the day of release for most continental U.S. addresses.

clip_image003

If you have God Gave Us You then check out the other titles in this collection – God Gave Us Love, God Found Us You, God Gave Us Two, God Gave Us Heaven, God Gave Us Christmas, and God Gave Us the World. God Gave Us Love is about loving others. God Found Us You is about adopting a child. God Gave Us Two is about a second child coming into the lives of the bear family. God Gave Us Heaven is about what heaven is like. God Gave Us Christmas is about the relationship of Christmas and the birth of Jesus. God Gave Us the World  is about God’s vast uniquely special creations. There is also God Gave Us So Much a limited-edition collection containing 3 books — God Gave Us the World, God Gave Us Love, and God Gave Us Heaven.

You can find God Gave Us You and other WaterBrook Press books on their website. Keep up with other new WaterBrook Press releases, and learn about contests and prizes on their Facebook page and by tracking them on Twitter @WaterBrookPress.

Other WaterBrook books reviewed on Mom Start have been God Gave Us the World and The Dragon and the Turtle: Go On Safari.

Making Snack-Time Fun

Today I have a very special guest, Christine Coppa. I’ve had Christine on my blog before, we had a fun video interview and she was quite delightful with her wonderful snack time advice. Today she is leaving us with some more wonderful Snack Time Fun with these great tips.

Making Snack-Time Fun

imageHi, I’m Christine Coppa. You may know as a Yoplait Kids Yogurt Spokesperson, the Mama’s Boy blogger on parenting.com and the author of Rattled! (Broadway Books, 2009) I am excited to be here and share my tried-and-true tips on how to make snack-time fun!

1. It’s summer! The sun is shining and the weather is warm. You know what that means—picnic-time! My son JD, who turns 4 soon, and I love to eat snacks outside. He spreads his Toy Story beach towel on the grass and we munch on fresh grapes, peach slices and pretzel sticks. All of these snacks are awesome “dippers” for Yoplait Kids Yogurt. JD loves to drive a peach slice into Vrrroom Vrrroom Vanilla yogurt and gets a real kick out of seeing his buddy, Lightening McQueen, on the cup. Since Yoplait Kids Yogurt has 25% less sugar than other kids’ yogurts, I’m all for it (And I eat it, too!).

2. Something else that makes snacking fun is making it colorful. JD and I love to go on kitchen scavenger hunts for rainbow-themed snacks (great time-killer on rainy days, too!). We’ll grab orange baby carrots, red strawberries, yellow cheese crackers, purple grapes and even black olives (that JD loves to pop on his fingers and eat one-by-one!) This is also an awesome way to sneak a color lesson in, too.

3. No one likes to eat alone, so even if you’re not hungry, pour yourself a glass of iced tea and sit down with child while he eats his snack. You deserve a break and your child deserves the company!

Seattle Living 7 Ways to Pet-Proof Your Apartment

An increasing number of landlords are permitting pets to reside in their properties. If you live in the greater Seattle area or are a looking for a new apartment, these 7 tips should help you pet-proof your place maybe even save you some money instead of losing you’re 4 legged friends.

By following these 7 steps, it will help insure the safety of your pet and protect your wallet from any damage that your pet could cause. This post was spawned from last weekend’s successful Family Pet Expo in Puyallup.

  1. clip_image002Secure and Hide Power Cords – Power cords and cables pose a couple of different threats to your pets. First of all, many pets see them as potential "chew toys." Secondly, if your pet is playing with a cord, there is a risk of strangulation if the animal were to get tangled up in it. To pet-proof your apartment, hide power cords and try to keep them out of reach, if possible. You may even want to invest in cord covers if you are unable to hide or secure some of your cords and cables.
  2. Toxic Flowers and Plants – Many pets love potted plants and fresh flowers. Unfortunately, there are several varieties of plants and flowers that are toxic to animals. In order to pet-proof your apartment, check with your veterinarian to find out if the plants you currently keep are dangerous to pets. Also, don’t bring any new plants into your apartment without doing some research first. If you are unsure about a plant or flower, keep it somewhere where your pets can’t get to it– it’s better to be safe than sorry.
  3. Eliminate Clutter – Another way to pet-proof your apartment is to try and keep it as clean and clutter-free as possible. Since many pets love to chew, a messy apartment can be very hazardous, indeed. Small items can pose a choking threat, so make sure to keep anything that could be swallowed off the floor and out of reach. Even items like shoelaces, rubber-bands, and hair bands are extremely unsafe. If your pet swallowed one of these items, it could easily get lodged in their intestines causing a block or worse. If your apartment is clean, it will be easier to spot items that you need to keep away from your pets.
  4. clip_image004Put Food Away – Never leave food or snacks out that your pet could get into. In order to thoroughly pet-proof your apartment, always put food away. Some human food is not safe for your pets to eat, and leaving something harmful out where your pet could get into it could result in a costly visit to your veterinarian. Some pets can climb or are tall enough to reach things on a table or counter, so keep that in mind when deciding where to store your snacks.
  5. Properly Store Medications – Like food, medications need to be stored in a place your pets can’t access. This is very important if you want to pet-proof your apartment. Medications, whether they are for humans or pets, can be ingested by an animal very quickly leaving you very little time to get them the emergency medical attention they would need. If you keep medications in your purse or handbag, be sure to never leave it unattended on the floor– hang it up or put it away as soon as you walk in the door so that you don’t forget about it.
  6. clip_image006Chemical Safety – You can find a variety of chemicals in every household, and an apartment is no exception. From cleaning supplies to insect and pest killers, you probably have more than you realize. To properly pet-proof your apartment, always be sure that the cleaning supplies you use are not toxic to your pet. Keep your pet out of areas that have just been cleaned with something that might be potentially hazardous, and always lock chemicals away after using them. Likewise, keep your pet out of areas in your apartment that are being treated for an insect or pest infestation. Take your pet outdoors or to another safe location if necessary. Chemicals such as these are very dangerous if they were to come into contact with a pet’s skin or if they were to be ingested.
  7. Inform Sitters and Guests – Whether you are having guests over for dinner or you’re hiring a sitter, be sure to inform anyone coming into your apartment that you have a pet and of any rules regarding the safety and care of your beloved companion. Let company know that it isn’t okay to feed your pet anything other than pet food without your consent, and tell them of any other rules you may have about opening and closing doors and which toys are safe for your pet to chew on or play with.

Always provide your pet with food, clean water, toys, exercise, and a clean, designated place (or places) for them to go to the bathroom. It’s important to find proper veterinary care as well. Your pet’s veterinarian can answer any questions you may have about your pet’s health and safety and keep your pet up-to-date on vaccines that may be required by many apartments. By taking the time to pet-proof your apartment, you can share your living space safely and happily with your special pet, as well as prevent any damage or destruction to the property you are renting.

Tasty Treat Thursday Salted Caramel Chocolate Fudge Brownies

My 4YO son “helped” me make these brownies. They’re rich and chewy chocolate with a crunch of caramel like toffee on top. The sprinkle of salt adds a little extra treat to the flavors in your mouth. I recommend skipping your regular knifes for cutting and use a cake knife/spatula which seems to create less of a crumble mess on the sides of the brownie. Enjoy!

TRON: Legacy The Complete Story

Sam Flynn is the rebellious 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer who disappeared when Sam was just a child. When Sam looks into his father’s disappearance, he finds himself pulled into the same world of brutal programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for almost 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidante, Quora, Kevin Flynn and his son Sam must embark on a life-and-death voyage across a visually-stunning cyber universe to put an end to the evil Clu and his reign of this digital world.

I was worried that Tron Legacy the Complete story would be too scary for Miles. It’s not scary, this one has the book option where you can read it to yourself, or you can watch the mini videos of the story come alive listening aloud. Miles prefers the videos since I’m not always available to read it to him.

The First Years Ignite Stroller S130 Review

I have strollers. I have the original stroller purchased with the mate bucket carseat which was a necessity for an infant. My second stroller is a secondhand double jogging stroller. The problem with both of these strollers in their own right is they’re heavy and bulky. The First Year asked Mom Start to review the Ignite Stroller S130. I was game because I’m at the point in my life where I can ditch my first stroller and downsize in weight and space.

clip_image002

The First Year Ignite Stroller offers comfort for your child and smooth easy strolling for the driver. I have used this stroll walking on both lose gravel and sidewalks and find the driving smooth and easy to control. An adult has to assemble the stroller, but no tools are required. My husband did the assembly and said its 4-steps were “easy”.

Some models of The First Years Ignite Stroller include a bumper bar and/or cupholder. The model sent to me (pictured above) came with a cupholder but no bumper bar. All models have the canopy and a small handy under basket.

The length at which you can use The First Year Ignite will depend upon the size of your child, not the age for your child. The First Year Ignite Stroller is for children 50-pounds (22.5 kg) or less, and standing 40-inches (102 cm) or less.

clip_image004

This stroller is nice looking; you can get The First Year Ignite in the following patterns: Abstract Os, City Chic, Elegance Black Stripe, Fleur, Pink Polka Dotty, Red Stripe, Retro Geo, and Abstract Os Navy. Mom Start has been privileged to use the Abstract Os; shown below with my 22MO on board. Note my green water bottle in the area between the handle bars which is a built in pocket and cupholder. (Ignore Riley’s chocolate face … he just pigged out at big brother’s end of year preschool party.)

You can find The First Years Ignite Stroller for sale on Amazon including FREE Super Saving Shipping – it’ll show up right at your front door – and FREE Returns – if there’s issue contact Amazon!

The First Years is a Learning Curves Brand. Find and “Like” The First Years on Facebook and track them on Twitter @TheFirstYears. You can find and “Like” Learning Curve on Facebook and track them on Twitter @LCToys.

This The First Years Ignite Stroller has been briefly used by Mom Start for this review and will be given to a local baby’s/children’s charity for donation to a family in need with thanks from Mom Start to the Learning Curve Brands and The First Year.

Photo Sharing Methods

I love to take pictures, I’ve even been known as the blogger with the big camera. Yes, I have a big camera and I take it everywhere attachments and all. Well, when you have a big camera everyone wants you to take their photo and then I have to share the photo with everyone. Which I don’t mind but let me tell you that when I try to send big files like photos are, cause big cameras take big photos, then I have to find some joint place to share them. Like this picture, this picture was taken on my trip to LA with Disney. We were interviewing Disney legend Burny Mattinson and then we took a large group shot. So I had to find a way to share this with over 20 people.

image

There are a lot of online file sharing sites out there. In fact I don’t even always use a true file sharing site to share photos. My favorite place to upload them is on Facebook because everyone I know has a Facebook account. Even my husband who hates Facebook has an account. It’s just a common place that we all are.

I’ve used Flicker, and Photobucket to share photos as well. I’ve even uploaded a few photos to my skydrive. My husband works at Microsoft and that’s how we share a lot of files. We share photos and documents, grocery lists and recipes. Then there is Adobe SendNow. I don’t know anything about them personally. I’ve heard that they are a great place upload photos and that it’s really easy to use. People don’t even have to be a part of the service to receive files from you. I’m just wondering if any of you have tried it. The very basic plan is free for everyone to use and then the service of up to 2 GB starts at 9.99 a month.

So Have you used Adobe SendNow?
