Motts Vegetable Juice & All You Extreme Couponing

Mott’s Garden Blend Vegetable juice tastes like drinking salsa, and that’s a good thing to me. I love salsa, love love love it. So much so that I would drink salsa if I could. I just can’t stand drinking the chunky pieces and Mott’s Garden Blend Vegetable juice is well blended and not too thick. One serving has about 45 calories and it’s perfect for the kids because then they aren’t devouring sugar. Instead they are getting much Mottsneeded vitamins and nutrition.

About Mott’s Garden Blend Vegetable Juice:

Mott’s Garden Blend is 100% vegetable juice (containing 2 servings of veggies), is a great source of Vitamins A & C and only 45 calories per 8 oz. glass.

Now for the extreme couponing part of the review. All You is my favorite magazine because it has so many coupons in it. In fact, I would subscribe to it with every family member’s name just to get my hands on all those wonderful coupons. I love to save money and I know that everyone else in the US does too, otherwise TLC’s Extreme Couponing wouldn’t be so successful right (All You is not affiliated with TLC or with Extreme Couponing in any way)? All You is so excited about Mott’s Garden Blend Vegetable Juice they are letting me choose 25 of my readers for an All You magazine giveaway.

From Book To Movie: Interested in The Help?

I went to a very early screening of The Help and all I’m allowed to say at this point is that you need as many tissues as you can find. A whole box per person that attends this movie. No, not everyone at the screening cried, in fact the person sitting right next to me didn’t cry at all, but me, I was a fountain of waterworks. The movie The Help is based on the book The Help, and I haven’t read the book yet, my friends say I should read it, but if I’m going to cry that much I’m not sure about reading the book.

The Help Movie PosterBased on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon,  “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s,  who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.
Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, “The Help” is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

Tell me, should I go get the book and read The Help?

Tasty Treat Thursday Individual Cran-Apple Pies Recipe

My husband loves apple desserts which is why when I bake I try to include apples if it’s a fruit treat. Since this past Sunday was Father’s Day and I didn’t do anything special for him on that day, and we just got back from a vacation and he returned to a 14-hour day of work due to reviews he deserves this … well, not that he doesn’t deserve it anyways, but I made these for him. Enjoy this comfort food!

P.S. – My DH loved them and ate 3 of the 12 I sent with him to work. NAILED IT!

Individual Cran-Apple Pies Recipe

Filling
INGREDIENTS
6 Granny Smith apples
½ to 1 cup dried cranberries, as desired (if you use a full cup only use 5 apples)
¾ cup sugar
2 Tablespoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground clove
2 Tablespoons flour

DIRECTIONS

1. Peel, core, and slice the apples. I LOVE my Back-to-Basics apple peeler and corer from Williams-Sonoma. If you bake a lot with apples or if you have an apple tree I can’t recommend this product enough for fast turnaround on any apples you’re using in your cooking.

2. Combine apples, cranberries, sugar and cinnamon. Let set for at least an hour (I let mine sit for 3 hours), stirring every half hour to allow apples to juice and allow the cranberries to soak up the apple juice. ***GREAT TIME TO MAKE THE CRUST***

3. Add nutmeg and clove. Stir. Add in ½ tablespoon of flour at a time; stir after each deposit.

Crust
INGREDIENTS
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup flour
½ cup wheat germ
½ cup ground flaxseed
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup cold water (or less)

DIRECTIONS

1. Heavily grease a 12-cup regular sized muffin tin.

2. Mix butter, flour, wheat germ, flaxseed, and salt with a fork (or pastry blender) until very crumbly. Add as much water as needed to hold the dough together and mix lightly with a fork. Do not over wet. Do not over mix dough.

3. Dump out onto a floured surface. Roll until 1/16 inch thick. Cut 4×4 squares out of rolled dough. Place in a square into each of the cups.

Crumble
INGREDIENTS
2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
¼ cup light brown sugar
¼ cup quick cook oats

DIRECTIONS: Combine ingredients and stir until crumbs form.

Assemble and Cook

1. Preheat oven to 350oF.

2. Fill raw crust cups with filling. Top with crumble.

3. Cook for 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown the edges.

4. Cool for 7-10 minutes and serve warm.

5. Garnish as desired – cinnamon sticks and apple peel are nice . Also add ice cream or whipped cream as desired.

WhoNu? Cookies Could Be Delicious and Nutritious

I’m a cookie monster, I came from a cookie monster father. He and I both share an addiction to the beloved cookie. When left alone with a package he and I can finish one off in one sitting. Cookies are not healthy, so this is a bad habit that I try to avoid, but what if, with all that sugar and deliciousness, we could get something beneficial from the cookies we devoured too? Nutritional Cookies, can it be?

whonu cookies

imageWhoNu? Cookies Could Be Delicious and Nutritious? Certainly not me! WhoNu? cookies are deceptively nutritious. Why are they deceptive? Because they look and taste like everything one of my favorite brands makes. After receiving four different types of WhoNu? cookies, I actually thought they just repackaged my favorite chocolate chip soft cookies, my favorite black and white cookies, and my favorite crunchy chocolate chip cookies in their own packaging.

Since everyone knows that moms are going to give their children cookies from time to time, the ingenious people at Suncore Products asked the important question, “Why can’t a snack be delicious and nutritious?” WhoNu?™ cookies are designed to look like old family favorites and provide an alternative to indulgent treats that offer little or no nutritional value.  And as I said before, they succeeded.

The Nutritional Benefits of WhoNu?™ cookies:

WhoNu?™ Cookies are an excellent source of Calcium, Iron, Vitamins A, B12, C, D and E. They also have 3 grams of fiber and a total of 20 essential vitamins and minerals.

*Per 3 cookie serving. See individual product pages for complete nutrition information.

The four varieties of WhoNu?™ cookies, including chocolate and vanilla sandwich cookies and both crispy and chewy chocolate chip, will be available at major retailers nationwide this July. But thanks to the Double Duty Divas, LLC and WhoNu, you and I get to try them first.

Throw a Surprise Pampers Baby Shower

As many of you may know, I spent early last week in Cincinnati with Pampers learning about all of their community programs. One of the great things they did, they surprised a family in need with a baby shower. Pampers listened to many stories and picked a family that didn’t have anything ready for baby because baby came way too soon.

The baby shower is part of the wonderful on-going program, Miracle Missions program. I’m still doing a lot of the leg work behind my own person miracle mission, and I just met with my charity today to find out about everything they need. I’m quite excited to put everything together.

Pampers

On the Pampers Facebook page they supported moms for mother’s day and dad for father’s day and now they are working on helping out families that have fallen victim to one of the many natural disasters going on around the country. All you have to do is make a pledge to help support a family that is struggling with every day basic living essentials. If you’re already helping, have helped in the past, or have been personally impacted, they would love to hear your story. Make a difference and you enter The Little Miracles sweepstakes while you’re at it. It’s  for a chance to win free diapers and wipes for a year.

For every click of the “I support” button on the Pampers Miracles Facebook app, Pampers will donate one diaper, one pack of wipes, and one dollar to Direct Relief International ® to help those in affected areas. For every story shared on the Pampers Miracles Facebook app, they will donate an additional two diapers, two packs of wipes, and two dollars to Direct Relief International ®. So go pledge your support now.

Bag the Box Environmentally Saving on Packaging

You know we’re trying to be more green and earth friendly around here on MomStart. I’m learning as I go, and it’s been quite a process on some things and quite easier on others. I’ve recently learned that I might even have to make some changes in products that I buy. Would you go out of your way and buy different products to make your carbon footprint smaller?

blueberry-mini-spooners logoOne way is to pay attention to the packaging the product comes in. You can make environmentally friendly switches with your morning bowl of cereal.  Earth Day may have passed but we can continue to make good choices, choose to “Bag-the-Box” and create less waste with Malt-O-Meal cereals! We received a sample of the Malt-O-Meal Blueberry Spooners and while the kids are enjoying them, the packaging was just a simple bag, instead of a box with a cereal bag in it, thus saving the box. And my husband disposed of the packaging before I was able to take a picture of it.

Malt-O-Meal is leading the charge in the way that people think about breakfast cereal by creating innovative products and processes that use fewer natural resources and create less waste.  One simple way they are doing this is by producing cereal in a bag and urging consumers to “Bag-the-Box” to reduce waste and lessen the impact on the environment. Just how wasteful is it to package cereal in a box?

Check it out:

• By packaging their cereal in a bag and eliminating the unnecessary use of a box, Malt-O-Meal has reduced the amount of packaging that consumers have to dispose of by 75 percent.
• Each year the United States produces 2.3 billion cereal boxes.  That’s enough paperboard to build not one, but almost three great pyramids!
•    It takes 345 million pounds of paperboard to make a one year’s supply of cereal boxes. That’s the weight of 734,747 jumbo jets.
•    By skipping the box and producing their cereal in a bag, Malt-O-Meal has saved 156 million pounds of paperboard since 2001. If those boxes were laid end-to-end they would reach three quarters of the way to the moon or go around the moon 26 times!
•    It takes 2.4 trillion BTU’s of energy to power the plants that make the boxes. That is enough to power 26,000 homes.  Additionally, the plants that make the boxes generate waste as well:

  • As much particle air emissions as 31,000 city buses
  • As much greenhouse gas as 50,000 cars
  • Enough solid waste to fill 4,677 garbage trucks
  • Enough wastewater to fill 506 Olympic swimming pools

But Malt-O-Meal doesn’t stop there, they do much much more for the environment. 100 percent of the electricity used in the production of Malt-O-Meal cereals is offset by the purchase of wind credits and the company also participates in “upcycling” programs without adversely impacting the cost of its products.

DIY Instructions How to Make an Ogre Slaying Knife

You remember last Wednesday for Wordless Wednesday, I showed you my beautiful Ogre Slaying Knife/Pirate sword that I made all by myself. Well, I had an amazing instructor, Holly Conrad, and these are her instructions on how to make an Ogre Slaying Knife and I wanted to share those instructions with you.

ogre slaying knife

You will need:

Paper and Markers (to make your pattern)
A Band Saw
A few pieces of 1/4th inch MDF
A Rotary Tool with different bits (could replace the band saw altogether)
Two Part Epoxy
Gray Primer
Black Paint, Silver Paint, Rub-n-Buff Gold Paint

Directions:

Draw your sword on a piece of paper
Cut it out and create two paper patterns – the whole sword and then hilt, handle and blad
Draw them on your board (the whole sword, then make two handles)
Now Cut your wood on the band saw (it’s awesome using the band saw)
You should have 3 total pieces
Use the Epoxy to glue all of the pieces together and then get ready to detail

Use the Rotary tool to make the knife look sharp, making indentions and shaving the wood to a point. Holly says, “Take your rotary tool, and using a small sanding disk, clean bevel the edge of your blade to make it look pointy (bevel the hilt as well, add scrollwork, go crazy) I recommend taking a cutting wheel attachment and adding a few ding marks on the blade to show your friends you’ve killed a lot of ogres.”

Clean it off
Prime your sword with the gray primer
Paint it black, then cover with rub-n-buff
Then paint the hilt any color you’d like

My partner (pictured above) in crime is Eric from Tools in Action.

This DIY idea is brought to you by Craftsman, my instructor Holly Conrad, and strong women everywhere. Craftsman paid for all my expenses to Chicago to learn and overcome my fear of using tools.

Cars 2 In Theaters Friday June 24th

Cars 2 is a great movie for ages 7-12. My kids 3, and 4 went to the early screening with their dad and my daughter said it was too scary, and my son loved it The only negative thing was that all day all they could say to each other was die, kill, shoot and their normal car toy playtime was much more violent that it usually is. So it’s a bit on the violent side for the much younger audiences. As an adult, I loved it. I usually watch children’s movies thinking what will my kids think of this movie? How will they enjoy it? Will they think that’s funny? I watched the movie all the way though and never thought of my kids. You see, the 3D looks so natural, that you’re transported into their world. It was amazing down to every detail of the cities they visited. In Paris, you could see how dirty the streets were and that there was trash everywhere. Having visited Paris, I loved that they didn’t glamourize the city. Most movies seem to have scrubbed the streets before they started filming. My husband watched it and said that it’s the first movie he’s seen in 3D that actually makes sense in 3D. He even said, they looked like real pictures of the cities, and he had a hard time believing that they were generated by a computer because they looked so real.

Cars 2 enters theaters this Friday June 24th promising to entertain all ages with the newest installment of Lightening McQueen and Mater, but what a surprise it packs as it’s not just another car movie, it’s a spy spectacular action filled film. Summer begins for Mater the minute Lightening gets home from a season of racing and winning his 4th Piston (renamed to Doc Hudson Cup). Their plans quickly change as Mater ends up on the phone with Francesco Bernoulli telling him that his friend Lightening is the fastest car around, and well, they end up in a world race trying to prove that very fact. That’s when the action begins, because little did anyone know, they were all in the middle of the biggest oil conspiracy ever.

I should back up just a bit, and let you guys know that the movie actually begins with Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) pulling off a Mission Impossible/James Bond move gathering intel on a missing agent. He finds that a well known bad guy Professor Z is behind some kind of evil plan involving a video camera, and Finn was discovered before he was able to find out all the details so he had to flee for his life. image

I really find myself feeling for Mater at the pre-party. He’s just being himself but he ends up embarrassing Lightening quite a bit. While Mater is trying to clean himself up, he’s mistaken for an American Spy that’s supposed to have all the answers to the espionage going on in Finn’s life, this is when we meet Holly Shiftwell. Holly has to step into the role of a field agent, because Finn can’t blow his cover. While Holly is talking spy talk to Mater, he ends up believing that he’s got a date!

image

This movie is all about Mater. As he enters the spy world all he can think about is how he’s disappointed Lightening McQueen. He wants to help Finn and does everything he can, until he finds out that even Finn sees him as a bumbling idiot. Mater learns that he is who he is and finds in the end that he’s happy that way. He loves his life and everyone loves him for who he is. Even Lightening wants Mater to be who he is because that’s who is best friend is.

Of course I left a lot of the details of the movie out, you need to go watch it yourself. There’s twists and turns and even eco friendly fuel brought to you by Sir Miles Axelrod (Eddie Izzard). You’ll feel like you’ve been transported right into a world of adventure and not even realize that almost 2 hours went by.

Disney paid for all expenses for me to attend the Red Carpet Premiere of Cars 2 in Hollywood.

Organize Your Bills and Manilla $1K Giveaway

My husband and I recently took a financial planning class and learned a lot about the importance of paying off debt and getting your bills organized. Now my husband spent hours organizing everything in an excel spreadsheet, creating formulas, tracking bank information and bill due dates and it works great for us, but it does have to be updated by hand every month. What if you don’t want to spend all that time updating an excel spreadsheet and you don’t want to pay for an on-line service to get your organized? That’s not a problem with Manilla.

manilla

Manilla is a free on-line service you can use to organize all of your bills. And to entice you to try out their services Manilla is giving away $1000.00 to one new user and we could all use that much money for something right? I would love to use it to pay our insurance deductible for the water damage we are currently suffering from. Let alone all the other debt we have. Aye Yi Yi!

manilla 2

Manilla’s online services help you organize your finances, household/bills, magazine subscriptions, and travel rewards programs. Our excel sheet isn’t even that extensive. Manilla automatically links you to your accounts so you can pay bills, book travel, renew subscriptions (which reminds me I need to renew my all-you magazine). With Manilla you can also access your accounts with nearly all national and major regional household brands within the four categories listed above.

Over time, Manilla hopes to be able to service all of your accounts making them the one stop organizational site on-line.

Wait, what about security? I know I know, the one thing my husband and I worry about most is on-line security. Is it safe? Here is the question you have to ask yourself? Do you do on-line banking with your bank? We actually do, we trust that our bank is going to keep all of our information secure. Manilla uses the same on-line security that banks use. In fact, Manilla recently acquired a contract with Citi Bank, and in order to win them over, they underwent serious high level security testing and past. So rest assured that they are doing everything they can to keep your sensitive date safe.
