Green & Black’s Organic Fair Trade Certified Chocolate

I like to purchase fair trade certified ingredients and products that lessen my impact on the environment. I had the privilege recently to try Green & Black’s Organic Fair Trade Certified Chocolate in the dark 85%, peanut, and toffee.

clip_image001Green & Black’s using only the finest organically-grown cocoa beans, believes that every step from bean to bar is equally important and strives to ensure that all ingredients are grown in ways that are consciously respectful of the planet – including maintaining a sustainable relationship working directly with cocoa farmers. Green & Black’s is a Fair Trade Certified brand dedicated to empowering its cocoa growing partners to establish sustainable livelihoods and communities. Farmers receive a guaranteed minimum for their ingredients, along with an additional premium to invest in the social, environmental and economic development of their countries. Green & Black’s name carries on these values in its name; green referring to organic and black referring to the color of deep, rich dark brown and almost black color of chocolate.

clip_image003

clip_image005On Thursday, April 28 I will be giving you a Monkey Bread recipe using Green & Black’s Dark 85% chocolate bar. These bars are yummy enough to eat solo (which I did sample the dark, peanut and toffee bars I received), but if you’d like to do more than eat a bar solo, you can find chocolate recipes on the Green & Black’s website or by purchasing the The Green & Black’s Organic Ultimate Chocolate Recipes: The New Collection or Green & Black’s Chocolate Recipes: From the Cacao Pod to Muffins, Mousses and Moles.

Green & Black’s offers chocolate bars: White, Milk, Toffee, Peanut, Almond, Maya Gold, Ginger, Hazelnut & Currant, Cherry, Espresso, Mint, Dark 70%, and Dark 85%. Green & Black’s also offers a 72% baking bar and hot chocolate. Get your own chocolate! It may be closer than you know; check your local stores for Green & Black’s!

You can find Green & Black’s Organic on Facebook and on the Green & Black’s US website. You can also get on their email list to stay up to date on Green & Black’s latest news and information.

How To Blow Eggs and Other Beautiful Easter Craft Ideas

Easter is just around the corner and I love to reach into my Easter box to do quick holiday decorating without breaking a sweat. Growing up in Hungary, Easter was always a special time of the year that celebrated the arrival of spring and had strong religious implications. Coloring and ‘writing’ Easter eggs is an art women mastered over the course of years, using organic and natural materials to create the most breathtaking colors and motives.

clip_image002

While my egg decorating skills would not produce anything like these, I have a few simple tricks up in my sleeve that will help you to create your own shabby décor for springtime. I promise you, once you spend just a little bit more time on coloring eggs, you will be pleased to open that ‘Easter’ box year after year.

The first step is blowing out your eggs. I know, this may sound a bit scary but it is actually quite simple. You may crack a few eggs along the way, but hey, you are learning something new so do not give up. Once you have empty eggshells, the limit is the sky to what you can do with them (and you won’t feel bad spending a bit extra time on decorating, unlike with the hard boiled ones that you end up tossing in a few weeks).

Things you need to Blow Eggs:

Fresh eggs

A pair of small sharp scissors

A very long needle or skewer

First, you want to wash your eggs thoroughly since you are going to put your lips on them to blow the contents out. You will create a small hole on the top and a slightly bigger hole on the bottom. Take your sharp scissors and gently start to ‘drive’ one point into the shell. Turn your tool like a screwdriver until you created a little wear on the shell and continue to gently turn and push in the same time. You will wear a little hole on it. Using scissors allow you to gently enlarge the hole as you are turning the point, making a perfect circle. Don’t worry if your shell cracks and you have a bigger hole (I’ll show you a trick on how to cover it up).

poking a whole in egg egg with whole in it

Now you need to do the same on the bottom as well. After creating both holes, take your skewer or long needle and reach into the egg to break up the yolk.

And here comes the not so pleasant part … over a bowl, start to blow through the smaller hole on the top to blow out the contents on the bottom. It will take quite a bit of effort. You know when the shell is empty because it will give a whistling sound. Now you just need to dry them out and let your imagination go wild (oh, and don’t forget to make something yummy out of the contents – gotta love not waste).

blowing eggs

If you would like to color your eggs traditionally with beautiful pastels, you would want to do that before you blow them out. It just makes it easier to have the weight of the egg hold itself under the coloring liquid instead of bobbing around and giving you an uneven color. There are so many different cool methods for coloring eggs and the kits you can buy in any stores can be indispensable. Use the wax stick to create motives before you color the eggs, tie die them (one of my favorite), simply drizzle them with paint and glitter …. You know what I mean about the imagination part? (And I have a bunch more if you are interested).

This is how mine came out … I just filled a glass jar with pastel eggs and it made the most colorful touch to the mantle. You can see the tiny holes on the eggs … you know they are real. Fill a basket with them. Hang them up!!

clip_image010 clip_image012 clip_image014

I have a holiday tree in the dining room window that I decorate seasonally. Eggs, butterflies and flowers in the spring, birthday party theme colors, white-red-blue in July, funky colors and textures in the summer, harvest theme in the fall, pumpkins at Halloween, and of course Christmas gets its special touches as well. It is like having a year around Christmas tree that you can hang knick-knacks on and please your eyes and spirit every day, every season. And now that you have super light blown out eggshells, why not put them on your tree? What an excellent way to get your children out. Go on a nature walk and let them help you choose the branches. I set mine in just a metal pot and filled it up with pebbles and small rocks to keep the branches standing up sturdy.

Now back to your egg ornaments. You can make hangers for your eggs out of a piece of colored paper and some thread. Cut tiny circles, flowers or any shape that suits your fancy and will be able to cover the holes on your shells (you see, here is the way you can cover up bigger holes you may have made while blowing your egg).

clip_image016

Before you glue it on the hole, thread pretty string or ribbon into a needle, stitch it through the paper once and tie it off to create the hanger. Now, hiding the knot on the bottom of your paper, put a dab of glue on it and cover the hole. Use coordinating shapes and colors to cover the hole on the bottom as well. Ta-daaa, you have just made an egg ornament. And noooo, you don’t want to stop here, you want to have 10-15 of them to fill up your holiday branch or pretty basket on your dining room table. Once Easter is over, just safely tuck them away in the egg cartons and enjoy the sense of accomplishment next spring when you pull them out again.

Organic Cleaner Stain Solver Review

I have two boys. Some things are inevitable; one is stains. One of our many came recently during our TOMS One Day Without Shoes party on April 5. We were making footprints with what I thought was washable ink pads.

clip_image002No worries though! I got to try my new Stain Solver. My kitchen floor (to my dismay) is vinyl. It’s actually never been a problem to clean, but due to my laziness the ink stain sat on my floor for about a week. I mixed the concentrated Stain Solver as recommend on the jar. I added some on my cleaning cloth and rubbed the stain, but nothing happened. I then placed the Stain Solver directly on my floor and rubbed, and still nothing changed much with the stain. I then took only 1 teaspoon or less of the Stain Solver and rubbed with a wet cloth into my vinyl kitchen floor, and the stain was gone. Ta-da!

I used the jar I mixed for use on the floor for my laundry instead and got out stains such as chocolate milk from my kids’ clothing. What’s your stain? Stain Solver has the A to Z stains solved with their solution!

Stain Solver “Little Beauty”, the smallest size at 2.2 pounds, is only $14.97 plus taxes and shipping. Their other sizes (also cleverly named) will give you more Stain Solver bang for your buck: Laundry Lover is 5.2lb, Kid Size is 9.2lb, the Outdoorsman is 18.2lbs, and Supreme Commander is 50lbb. Stain Solver’s website will also tell you which size is right for your family’s needs.

clip_image003The best thing is Stain Solver is pure and gentle, and when mixed with warm water Stain Solver removes stains with its environmentally safe oxygen bleach which uses oxygen bubbles to clean. The raw materials of Stain Solver are actually registered by the FDA as food-grade quality. It’s “your everyday, everything ORGANIC cleaner”. Stain Solver is harmless to your stuff but powerful at removing all stains; it’s non-toxic and completely kid and pet safe. Stain Solver contains NO added dyes, NO filler, NO allergens, NO fragrances, and NO other chemical additives.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

clip_image006clip_image008

So what’s your before? Why do you need stain solver?

I really like the YouTube of video of founder Tim Carter cleaning grout (which is one of the hardest things to clean). If you really want to stay “in-the-know” then you should sign-up for the Stain Solver newsletter.

Extreme Couponing What’s Your Opinion? Monday Mingle

Are you ready for another Monday Mingle? I sure am, we recorded this early so it would be ready to go on Sunday. I’ve been pretty bad about getting it done on the last minute so woo hoo. We’re ahead two weeks in a row. Oh wait, do you even know what Monday mondaymingleMingle is? Just in case this is your first time to see it….

This is where we answer three questions every week over at Eighty MPH Mom on video or not you can just write them down in the comments section or on your own blog. Then we go link up and visit each other and learn about each other.  This weeks’ questions:

This week’s questions  {week of 4/18/11}:

1.  Did you watch Extreme Couponing? What are  your thoughts?
2.  What is the sales tax amount in the city/county you live in?
3.  Did you finish your taxes yet, or do you wait until the  April 15th deadline?

My Answers for this week:

1) No I’ve never seen it.

2) Actually, I was wrong on the video. Our sales tax is .095 and it’s the same at the same place we used to live, but where we used to live it’s about to go up to .10. YIKES.

3) We finished.

What about you?

Dallas The Movie Collection Review

Dallas: The Movie Collection came out on DVD April 12th. I received a copy to watch and loved that it had footage on it that I had never seen before. I’ve watched many of the movies from Dallas in the past, I’ve seen J. R. Returns, The War of the Ewings and I loved watching Return to Southfork. Return to Southfork brought the actors all together and they discussed what it was like working together and what their favorite scenes were. It was full of footage from years of Dallas. I’m mean, Dallas was awesome in it’s day running from 1978, two years before I was even born to 1991 where I had the chance to actually watch it for a few years. I’m sure I’ve seen many more episodes than I can possibly remember because my WHOLE family watched Dallas. My mom loved it, and my granny and papa on my Dad’s side had it on every Friday night. (I think it came on Friday nights) Anyways, I was allowed to watch it as a kid. Not sure I would let my kids watch it, but Dallas is a lot better than the crap on T.V. now.

Dallas: The Movie Collection 1000179039DVDLEFSynopsis: Big D gets even bigger with three movies and a cast reunion!  From 1978 to 1991, the TV series Dallas grew legions of fans with compulsively watchable tales of greed, sex and schemes – most masterminded by smilin’ J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman), the double-dealing oilman folks love to hate.  Dallas was so popular, it also spawned the four exciting pieces in this special collection, starting with a prequel (The Early Years) that sets the stage for the drama to come.  The other three, starring Hagman and more beloved cast members, include reunion movies (J. R. Returns, The War of the Ewings) that plunge a wheeling-dealing J.R. into plots to take over Ewing Oil and a fascinating retrospective (Return to Southfork) brimming with clips, outtakes, and reminiscences from your favorite Dallas stars.

Check out this clip from Dallas: The Movie Collection.

Sports Moms Resource and a Gatorade Survival Pack Giveaway

With Winter over and Spring finally here we’re entering into Sports Season. Kids and moms will be busy busy busy going from activity to activity, and from practice to games. With all of this activity comes nutritional needs, and sometimes injuries and moms want to know how to take care of their kids under all conditions. Gatorade created the “Gatorade Sports Mom Study” to find out exactly what moms want to know. From the survey they found:

image

· Sports Moms are a big community 13 million strong. In fact, 7 of 10 moms are raising kids in competitive sports.
· Athletes have special nutritional needs to fuel sports performance and nutrition is where Sports Moms say they make the most impact on their young athletes’ success.
· Despite their commitment to nutrition, Sports Moms have concerns and uncertainties around their #1 role, including protein, hydration, pre- and post- game fuel.
· Sports Moms reported that there are additional nutritional challenges when raising an athlete including the fact that kids in sports eat an extra meal a week and two more meals away from home than kids who aren’t in sports.

Because Gatorade is really into supporting moms and sports they have developed a new resource for moms to connect and learn more about kids and sports. When Visiting the Sport Mom’s Resource you’ll find things like:

· Articles and advice discussing various topics including nutrition, hydration, sports injury and training and conditioning
· Meet real Sports Moms, not actors, as they share their stories about raising kids in sports
· Watch
Sports Mom TV, inspirational documentary webisodes featuring real Sports Moms of youth athletes and professional athletes
· Learn how Gatorade is scientifically formulated to give athletes the edge and about Gatorade’s 40+ years of science and athletic research

I received a really cool Sports Mom Survival Pack from Gatorade. It’s quite a treat. The running jacket is made of that dry wet material that keeps you dry while you work out, and it’s super nice quality. Of course I love the Gatorade too and I’ll be happy to give that to my kids in the following weeks. Zoe’s a lot like her dad, she likes anything other than water.

Aloha Old London Sweepstakes and Melba Toast Review

Aloha from miss Zoe! We received a package of three different types of Old London Melba Toast to try out and inside the box was a cute flower lei. Well of course that belongs to Zoe now…As it should you can see here:

IMG_9479

I had made plans to do something fancy with the toast because Old London also sent us quite a few different recipes to try, but it was Spring Break this week and my daughter has this new ants in her pants has to always be doing something mentality. It has something to do with preschool and growing up I think. Anyways! We were on the go all week and well, the Old London Melba Toast turned out to be the perfect on the go in the van kind of snack for the kids. At 60 calories a serving the kids were able to enjoy the Spicy Cheddar Bagel Chips one day and the Sea Salt Melba Toast another. Now Old London wants to help us fit into our Summer clothing selections, you know those bathing suits. Oh yeah, those! So they are encouraging us to make healthy food choices with simple foods in our everyday meals. The Old London Famous snacks are a great way to satisfy mid-day hunger when paired with light treats like salsa, Greek yogurt and cheese.

Melba Toast

In addition to making great healthy toast to further inspire healthy living, Old London has launched “Aloha Old London sweepstakes” This sweepstakes gives you the chance to be a guest in the beautiful Oahu, Hawaii with an all-expenses paid Hawaiian vacation. The winner will be invited to soak up the sun, enjoy the spa (I wish it was me already) and enjoy the surf. Oh, I would love the chance to visit Hawaii someday. I’m a beach sunshine girl through and through. Oh and did I forget to mention the winner will also be treated to private cooking lessons during the four-day, three-night all expenses-paid trip?

Enter the Aloha Old London Sweepstakes now through June 30th, 2011.

Dinosaur Train Easter Ideas Hatching Cupcakes

mzl.xqdrujij.320x480-75Dinosaur Train was created by Craig Bartlett (Hey Arnold!). The show embraces and celebrates the fascination that preschoolers have with both dinosaurs and trains while encouraging basic scientific thinking and skills. It’s the perfect combination if you ask me. Each episode includes animated segments with live-action sequences featuring a paleontologist who brings to life the show’s natural science and natural history curriculum for preschoolers, giving specific facts about dinosaurs and comparing their features to animals of today.

In the spirit of the Easter egg hunt tradition, Dinosaur Train offers a new twist!  Kids can watch the characters from Dinosaur Train hatch from their eggs and grow 4x their size with Hatchers! It’s simple, easy funJust place the egg in water and wait for it to crack! The Hatchers would make a great addition to an Easter Basket!

Another Easter Gift Idea would be the Dinosaur Train Eggspress application, now for iPhone, iPod and iPad ($2.99). This application challenges your child to find and match dinosaur eggs and then reunite dinosaur families while progressing through three different time periods. Your child will discover real flora and fauna from the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous eras. Along the way, there will be learning moments as Buddy and the Conductor reveal mystery dinosaur hatchlings, fun dinosaur facts, and an adorable Dinosaur Baby Book.  All aboard! Check out this review from Geek Dad.

In addition to filling Easter baskets this year with chocolate Easter bunnies and yellow chicks from the store, why not get the entire family together to make homemade treats that everyone can enjoy! How about baking a cake in the shape of an Easter egg and decorate it with the Dinosaur Train Cake Decorating set or top yummy cupcakes with Dinosaur Train Cupcake Rings, featuring Buddy and Tiny, from DecoPac.
