Patti Pelican and the Gulf Oil Spill by Lynda Deniger

Since my mom lives in the Gulf Coast and was affected by the Oil Spill last year, I wanted to check out this new book called Patti Pelican and the Gulf Oil Spill, with my kids. Lynda Deniger’s new environmental children’s book was a quick and easy read for the kids. Last year, we went to visit my mom a few months after the oil spill in Destin Florida. Now, I remember how worried she was and how hard she said everyone was working to keep the beaches clean. When we were there there wasn’t really any oil on the beaches. Every now and then you would see this oil ball, I can’t remember what it was called, but you had to keep your eye out patti pelican book coverfor that as you walked along the beach, but our trip was wonderful and the beaches were still in tip top shape.

I still thought that since my kids had a connection with actually visiting the beaches in the gulf that they would have a connection to the book. It’s been 1 year since the oil spill, in fact, the anniversary is April 20th and in honor of the anniversary Lynda has released this easy to read and beautifully illustrated story that teaches children about the importance of taking care of the environment. It also highlights what each and every one of us can do to help each other and the world.

I remember last year seeing pictures of the animals affected by the Gulf Oil Spill and that is the story that Patti Pelican and the Gulf Oil Spill tells us. Patti Pelican is a pelican that is friends with Sammy Seagull and the captain of the Salty Seas. One afternoon when Sammy and Patti were missing from the dock they are usually seen at, the captain goes off to find them. He finds them covered all in oil and takes them to be rescued. The animals telling the story of what happened to them is what captured Zoe and Miles. pattiSammy

Patti Pelican and the Gulf Oil Spill, teaches children that animals sometimes need our help. Before reading the book Zoe didn’t even realize that people helped animals. We had a dog and Zoe went with me to take the dog to the vet but she never realized that was there job. At the end of the book there are some questions to help you engage with yoru children about animals and things that children actually did to help out the animals along the Gulf Coast. I asked Zoe if she would sell her toys to raise money for animals and she came up with a few things she might be willing to part with. It was interested to see that she actually understood the story and how she could help animals when the time comes.

How To Use My Job Chart

My Job Chart is a free charting system you can use with children and their chores, basically, it’s a chore chart. It’s completely customizable for you to add what makes sense to your family and allows your children to fill out information themselves. When they complete the job you assigned they can go on and say the completed it, getting your kids on-line and teaching them about responsibility. When your children’s chores are completed you will receive an e-mail or text if you set it up that way about the points they earned. You can then reply to the message by posting on your child’s “post-it note” to positively reinforce good behavior and work ethic. The My Job Chart fully integrated message board system allows you to communication between your family members.

We’ve been working on teaching Zoe and Miles about money with a very simple method, do a chore receive a quarter. As they get older though, we’re going to have to add in saving, giving, and then saving to spend. I was given the opportunity to check out My Job Chart and it covers all of the basics (save, give and spend) when it comes to teaching kids about money.

How to Use My Job Chart:

Sign up it’s free

image

After signing up, you have the option to be notified when your child does anything with My Job Chart. I left all the settings to default. I added Zoe, whenever you add someone, you have the option of adding their photo. At this time I chose not to add a photo.

image

Now that I added a family member all of the options, assign jobs, jobs summary, manage rewards, and message board are all now available to me to use.

image

There are plenty of age appropriate chores to choose from, like make the bed, clean your room, do the dishes. With each chore you choose, you also get to choose if it needs to be done AM, PM or both and what day of the week. As I was choosing which jobs for Zoe to do, I did find myself wishing that after a job was chosen that it would disappear from the menu. I found it confusing as to which jobs I had already picked for her to do. But it didn’t add a chore more than once even though I purposely tried to, and if you want to review the list you have chosen it’s quite easy to do that.

image

After you have your family all set up with the jobs you want them to do each week, you get to manage the rewards. Zoe and Miles currently get 1 quarter per chore they do. They help out here and there and the immediate satisfaction of a quarter is a lot to them. While I was looking at the rewards system, I realized that I could pick anything that Amazon sells. So I know what Zoe is saving up for, it’s a Tangled doll, so that is what I assigned as her reward.

image

This prize worth 2100 points would be worth 400 quarters to Zoe. If we switched to the My Job Chart of points, we would have to assign her 5.25 points per job. The default point value is 10 points, so it’s up to you as a parent to decide how much a chore should be worth. That brings the question, for bigger jobs would you give more points or is a chore a chore?

How Your Child Uses My Job Chart:

image

Zoe would have to log in I set up a password for her when I created her account.

After I selected that she finished all of her chores, there was a very loud applause. That is the kind of praise that my kids LOVE! I was really impressed with that feature.

image

Then I received an e-mail saying she accomplished her tasks. The next step for the children shows that my kids aren’t in the right age group yet, but they will be soon enough. I think at age 5 or 6 you can start showing them the more complicated aspect of how much should I save, share, or spend. Spending and sharing, not only is My Job Chart integrated with Amazon for spending, they are integrated with giving to many different charities. You can teach your children to give within My Job Chart.

image

For now, I placed all of the points into her spending account. When she accumulates enough points she’ll be able to purchase her Tangled doll.

If for some reason what I said doesn’t make any sense My Job Chart has plenty of tutorials to walk you through the process of getting things set up. They also have a video you can watch, How My Job Chart Works:

Who was your favorite Smallville Character?

I’m actually a little bit sad that Smallville finally came to an end. I loved the show from the beginning. I was in college when Smallville started and it was one of the shows that I watched without fail. I continued watching it with my husband until the day we turned off our cable. Trying to write an organized post about Smallville is actually really difficult for me because I have so much to say about the series and it was on for 10 seasons but I’m going to try. First, I have to say that Lex was probably my favorite character until Lois came along. My husband and I never really cared for Lana, one, my husband thought she was a bit on the winey side and two, she was always leading Clark on. It was awful. Smallville Complete Box Art

As I was saying, Lex Luthor, anyone familiar with Superman knows who he is right?, was my favorite character because he was so much fun to watch. Lex and Clark had such a great relationship. They were almost friends at times but even from the very beginning Lex knew Clark was hiding something from him. Lex became obsessed with finding the truth about Clark he even ended up marrying Lana, Clark’s true love. Funny thing about Love and teenagers to young adults, things change.  At the end of season five (I told you this was going to be unorganized), Clark has to go to the phantom zone to save millions of people from a deadly virus that Brianiac unleashed. At the same time, Brianiac gave Lex some special powers which of course goes to his head. Then in the beginning of season six, Zod, after being freed from the phantom zone by Clark, takes over Lex’s body. So what happens? Well Clark and Lex battle it out and the city is practically destroyed. SmallvilleCompleteB#1682C5A-2

The battle between Lex and Clark goes on and off until about season 7 where Lex’s part became very small. Which is also about the same time we turned off our cable so I need to get the rest of the series so I can get caught up and fill in the missing holes. I did watch season 8 and feel like I’m missing out on a lot of information because I’m not sure that I watched season 7.

Relive the epic battles and the iconic rivalries with the the ‘Smallville: The Complete Series"! Includes 62 discs, never before seen production art and behind the scenes photos from the set!

Dora’s Garden Gazebo Mega Blocks Playset Review

Miles and Zoe just adore Dora. I think all 2 – 5 year olds have a thing for Dora at one time or another and I don’t see any way to avoid her. She’s everywhere, we don’t even have TV and my kids know all about Dora the Explorer. Of course, we do have a few of her DVD’s and over at Tully’s where I like to get a cup of coffee, there are some Dora toys there and the kids always rush over to the kid table to see who can get to Dora first.

Mega Bloks has two new Dora playsets that let children build and rebuild with their favorite cartoon character in many different ways. Each set has a Build a Dress feature that Zoe is just in love with. We received the Dora’s Garden Gazebo and Zoe loves having the ability to take doll clothes off and put them back on and switch them. I actually thought that was the most creative part about the playset, the ability to change the skirt.

IMG_9565

Miles played with it first and he needed a little help to build the playset but Zoe came home and put it right together and it looked like my husband did it. I even asked him, did you help Zoe put that together and he said nope. She did it all by herself. Dora’s Garden Gazebo comes with everything little girls need to have a garden party of their own. There is a sunflower to water, and a table with an umbrella along with a bird. Zoe put the bird in the flower pot and said that it was building a nest there and that the flower had to go somewhere else. I thought that was pretty creative of her. IMG_9564

That’s something that Mega Bloks is really great at. Mega Bloks inspire kids in role  playing while helping them to develop their hands on coordination. They build and rebuild and play.

For ages 3 and up, Mega Bloks has new Dora Buildable playsets that let children build and rebuild in many different ways. Each set also includes a Build & Dress Dora with fun accessories.

We received samples from Team Mom on behalf of Mega Bloks to facilitate this review.

Label Making Fun with Brother P-Touch Label Maker

The Brother P-touch Label Maker

When Louise asked if I’d be interested in reviewing the Brother P-touch Label Maker, I was SUPER stoked! I’ve always wanted one of these. Even when I was a kid, I was envious of other kids who had stickers on their lunchboxes made of those cool labels on red plastic sticker strips with the letters punched into them. I had plans. I was going to label anything and everything! Well, sadly, I never got the opportunity as a kid, so I jumped on this one!

I was so excited to get this fabulous little machine and start playing with it. At first, I kind of hid it from my kids. I wanted to play with it first! It’s awesome! It has so many more functions than I will probably ever use, some very professional looking, like custom business labels. There are two main fonts, and switching between the two is super easy. The full keyboard is great, and it’s small enough that you can (I did) hold it in your hands while walking around looking for things to make labels for! It feels a lot like texting, just on a bigger phone. The labels come out instantly, there is a cutting tool right in the machine, and they stick to pretty much anything!

After I had made a label for one kid’s trumpet case, for a few toy bins, the kids’ water bottles, I decided they could play too. And play they did!

We made labels for everything! From the normal…

About Rachel

Rachel is also a MOMS club member. She is thankful for the blessing of staying home to raise her three crazy, wonderful kids. In addition to scrapbooking, she likes knitting, gardening, reading, blogging and otherwise avoiding the housework she should be doing. You can read about her adventures and disasters at rachel’s ramblings.

Rachel and her family had lots of fun with the Brother P-touch Label Maker, which is exactly what we would have done in our family too. My husband loves labels. He used a label maker when he was school aged and labeled everything in Russian in an attempt to learn Russian. All fun aside, the Brother P-touch Label Maker can also be used for organization around the house. Here are a few organization tips Professional Organizer Diane Albright has to offer:

· Create a fool-proof system.  Set up an organization system so that whether you’re there or not, the household can still function.
· Conquer storage space.  Labels don’t have to be just for reorganizing the home office!  A Brother P-touch labeler can also be a great tool for labeling those winter storage boxes and craft supplies, making it easier for your family to find them next year.
· Regain control of the refrigerator.  Start labeling leftovers in the refrigerator using the date/time function on the P-touch PT-1090.  This will help regulate the clutter and allow moms to identify what’s good and what needs to be thrown away to prevent kitchen odors.
· Clutter Patrol. Every night, have a clutter patrol at 6 or 7 p.m. where everyone roams the house, picks up all their things and puts them away.

Garage Sales Tracker Advanced

Remember a month ago when I was writing about how I’m in full garage scale mode, well, I kinda just sat on my butt for the whole month, except when I would occasional throw something in that this is going in the garage sale pile. My pile is bigger and I need to start pricing it all and organizing it. The garage sale is in 2 weeks. How are your garage sale plans going? Or are you just a garage sale shopper?

image

Me, I love going garage sale shopping. I grew up going to them almost every Saturday with my grandmother. She is the most frugal woman I know and taught me everything I forgot. (my husband and I are re-learning how to save money and spend wisely). If you are like my grandmother then you want to hit as many garage sales as you can in one day, so you plan out your trip.

That is one of the great things about Garage Sales Tracker! Garage Sales Tracker is that they are with the times! They understand things like social media, and the fact that people are on the go go go! With the use of their iPhone app or their trip planner you can one plan out your garage sale day in advance and two, you can just find them while you are out and about.

image

With the Garage Sales Tracker iPhone app you can search for sales by zip code, fine more than just garage sales (consignment shops, flea markets) and search for garage sales by what people are selling. Are you looking for a really nice lawn mower, using the app (as long as the sell has it listed) you’ll find it. Getting directions easily while on the go is another perk. Be sure to check out the trip planner feature to plan out your trip in advance and bookmark the things you want to check out at a later time.

Things Remembered Mother’s Day Giveaway

The month of May is such a wonderful month. It’s my birthday (no, I won’t tell you how old I am) and it’s Mother’s Day. Picking out the perfect gift for mom can be a daunting task. I know for me, I always tell my husband not to spend any money on me, but he does anyways and it makes me happy.

One of my favorite brands that I get to work with here on my blog is Things Remembered. They have the best products and make it so easy to personalize something. I was asked to pick something out for myself or a mom I know and well, I couldn’t follow directions. My daughter, loves jewelry right now. I mean, she’s a little princess and wears something every day. I found the Things Remembered Fashion Birthstone Necklace and knew that she would love it. We’re saving it for a special occasion…just look at it:

Make Sure Life Goes on Even When The Lights Go Out Illumaguard Giveaway

What do you do when the lights go out? The last house we lived in the electricity went out ALL the time. I mean seriously, I do not miss that house and the scheduled and unscheduled power outages. The lights were always out and once I had kids I had to make sure we had eaten before a schedule one. Of course there are unexpected things that happen all the time and the power goes out. One year we had a terrible wind storm that left most of Washington without power for a week. I remember thinking how we’d be lucky to have the power back on by Christmas. There are a few ways to be prepared, you know, batteries, candles and back up plans and it’s important to be prepared because more than likely you will be without electricity at some point in the next year.

Did You Know?

1.) On average, there are 20 million lightning strikes in the US each year, leaving hundreds of thousands in the dark, inconvenienced, and “at risk” for long periods of time.

2.) In 2009, a total of 2,470 power outages were reported in the US that kept over 30% of the nation’s households in blackout conditions for a total of 7,699 hours – or the equivalent of 321 days.

3.) According to FEMA, the use of candles in homes causes an average of 15,600 residential fires, over $120 million in property damage and loss, 150 deaths and 1,270 injuries each year.

illumaguard

For these reasons there is a solution to keeping your lights on as a temporary back up system. Most of the outages we had at our old house were just a few hours and if your power outage is less than 10 hours, illumaguard can help you keep your lights on. When using illumaguard make sure you let the illumaguard charge to a light for 48 hours. After you let it charge, it’s easy to use. Just turn on the the light the illumaguard is plugged into and pull out the cord. In a second, the illumaguard will provide electricity to your light for 8-10 hours. Every few hours, the amount of light will go down a bit. It loses some of its brightness. This gives it longer life allowing it to last up to 10 hours. Having the lights on when I’m home alone really helps me to feel safe. I hate the dark and I love the idea of having 8 hours of more light during a power outage. It’s also a great opportunity to go dig up the flashlights, and be able to find them without hitting your head or stumbling on toys.

You can purchase Illumaguard Table/Floor Lamp Power Outage Backup System on Amazon or illumaguard. The cost is $59.99, or two or more for $49.99 each.
